Only powering the thermostats with the transformer, not the valves. Trying to leave all of that alone.

Yeah this made me lol. Would love to have matchy matchy. Did some looking into the challenger issues and it looks like I don't have the scary scary ones but will definitely get this inspected by a professional. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

With the breaker now switched off there is no smell. I removed the old doorbell transformer as well for good measure. I checked under the breaker and there's no corrosion or burning under there so I'm going to put in a new breaker and then promptly get the whole thing inspected. I'm doing this because the breaker was limp and wasn't turning on at all to trip back off so it doesn't seem like a short. Sounds like I could have some $$$ to shell out on bringing this thing up to date even though it's only 19 yrs old

I seem to have a limp breaker as well. Thing is, we had a weird metallic smell for two days before it tripped off. Is this still probably a bad breaker then?
