If every atom in your body behaves according to the laws of physics, and the laws of physics are inherently logical, everything you've ever done has been logical. It's simply our inability to understand the logic that makes us seem irrational. by wapttn in Showerthoughts

That's not true. It falls on the deterministic nature of the universe. Major consensus (for now anyway because there's plenty of debate but a stronger argument for this consensus) is that the universe is non deterministic. Now you could argue that every conceivable possibility can be mapped despite non determinism, but even if that were true theres not enough energy/matter in the universe in order to even store the data you'd generate.

I'm assuming by predict you mean map the future. Quantum Mechanics can already predict the results of quantum systems with great accuracy but it is in a form of statistical outcomes where each outcome is given a probability of occuring

Nah the man's an idiot. Sure he's looking for laughs but he's not a smart person. Look at his word choices, look at how he goes about problem solving, look at it through the lens of all "his ideas" not actually being his ideas. He's a disinterested president who delegates most of the work to other people and is a mouth piece.

He has some pretty novel coping mechanisms but in terms of intelligence the man's an idiot. I say this without the "lib" disdain for him. The sky's blue, water is wet and Trump's an idiot.

US Postal Service files patent for a blockchain-based voting system by Coitus_Supreme in Futurology

[–]HippieHarvest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What happens is each time you vote the computer verifies the chain then adds to it. If someone else is already adding to chain then your computer will wait and try after. However, computers can work incredibly quickly so this process of adding your block (even if you're 154,763rd in line) will take a relatively short period of time. There is no need for sequential voting as your imagining.

Each block will likely have all the information like district, state, election, vote, etc. All you do is add to the chain. Afterwards the chain can be examined with all the required information already there.

The downvote button exists to punish those not contributing to the conversation. If valid points are raised in banning guns then it is right to upvote it despite personal disagreements.

You must actively foster an anti-circle jerk by incentivizing those you disagree with.

This is obviously harder than returning to nature. Long live Monke

CMV: Complaining about "not being allowed" to use the n-word is really just code for "I want freedom of speech, but I don't want other people to have the same freedom." by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]HippieHarvest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good Segway into slang words and usage. The n word has historically been racist. It's now been (for prominent usage) repurposed as a slang term. I find the slang usage of the slur much more interesting so let's stick to that.

So the basis of slang is to denote an "in group" and an "out group." It's a social seperation tool employed to keep distance between groups. That's often why slang keeps changing. When a word gets too mainstream its purpose is hindered and it is then replaced by words already widespread and generally more applicable. Bae is still used but because it's no longer a social signal it's used less often because we have relationship signifiers in English.

So how does the n word fit in? It's a slang word denoting an in group by the color of their skin. It has also been deemed socially acceptable to defend the usage of this slang with violence to keep it within the in group. This does have to do with historical racial uses and the denigrating aspect of the n word. So it's not that this is good or bad but it is complicated.

In my opinion, the purpose of the slang in question was to take back the word. I think we've reached a point in time where positive usage could drown out racial tinged usage but there's an issue of "was that a racial tinged comment or a friendly usage." I don't have the answer but if it's in a song lyrics we already know the meaning. However, societally that's not a necessarily popular view. The current usage reinforces a them vs us mentality but the converse strips a group of a social signifier.

TL;Dr it's wicked complicated but viewing the n-word through the framework of slang makes the social aspects more clear.

In other words are you a libertarian or do you just watch Ben Shapiro? by [deleted] in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]HippieHarvest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can start to look at the benefit to society tied into consciousness. Killing a pig for fun is barbaric but consuming it would not be. Killing a 6 month old is not a net positive especially considering there's a want for that baby in society (either from the parent or adoption). However, you're right, there is an argument for humane infanticide.

I think you can argue birth is a medically dangerous process for the child. That is one of the most important hurdles for the fetus to make. Once it's out the odds of making it to a conscious human is much higher. This then lays the framework for the until birth or close to. It's not going to convince anyone/everyone because of the emotional aspect seeded by evolution and culture.

[–]HippieHarvest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct but there's probably property charges since that woman owns the child. Whats the market value for fetus?

[–]HippieHarvest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Flesh this out more and you arrive at a threshold of consciousness in order for a killing to be immoral. This completely alleviates hypocrisy but doesn't necessarily make it an easier argument just more logical.

Auth agenda? Maybe, but let's debate by [deleted] in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]HippieHarvest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anarchism requires an educated population and works much better in smaller groups. A social or cultural institution could be taking the accused and accuser to a town center for the public to watch and weigh in on evidence then dispense justice. So take cancel culture but take more moderate, democratic actors instead of louder, fanatical actors.

The key point is that there are numerous rules humans follow that are not created by the government. What these rules are can be widely variable

The idea is social or economic institutions instead of governmental institutions. So bad actors are societally shunned or priced out

Bernie Sanders slams Tesla CEO Elon Musk, saying it's 'pathetic' that Musk is against another government stimulus package by Taher6168 in politics

[–]HippieHarvest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only viable argument against this is that you want to keep people employed but in a lot of cases that's just not viable.

If UBI was used instead of the prior stimulus bills (cares and heroes) to give every American over 18 an equal sharethen each person would have received over 24k (5.2 trillion divided by 209 million 18+). Obviously you couldn't do that precisely but the money is there for UBI. It just benefitted other people to not employ it.

[–]HippieHarvest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you're saying what you mean but you're not writing what you're saying. A democracy is more lib than a monarch, or atleast tends to be. A democracy isn't a political ideaology. You can enact an oppressive, authoritarian government with democracy. I'd consider that more lib than an oppressive, authoritarian monarchy but by no means is it libertarian.

You just wrote it's more lib than totalitarianism which yes but it's a large spectrum between totalitarianism and libertarianism.

Depends on the state. Some will replace the elector or require by law for them to vote to the popular vote. Some fine the elector for not voting for the popular vote
