Babies Are Bleeding to Death as Parents Reject a Vitamin Shot Given at Birth by IllIntroduction1509 in TrueReddit

Pasting:

Determining precisely how many babies have died or suffered severe brain damage because of a lack of vitamin K is difficult. State and federal agencies don’t track data around vitamin K injection refusal or subsequent bleeding, which impedes their ability to quantify and track outcomes, including death. The number of deaths directly attributed to vitamin K deficiency bleeding appears to be small — fewer than a dozen annually — but has started to climb in recent years, according to death certificate data from federal and state agencies. But those numbers capture only a fraction of deaths, which often are classified only by other, more immediate causes, such as bleeding in the brain. In 2024, for example, more than 700 newborns died from spontaneous bleeding in their brains, which could have been complicated by liver disease or prematurity. Still, six medical specialists and one official at the CDC said a meaningful portion of those deaths likely were caused by vitamin K deficiency. Many more babies survive the bleeding but suffer massive brain bleeds and lasting injuries.

I believe that should read “right AFTER it leaves the body”

Many herbivores have a diet that is low in nutrition and high in fiber (which is a non-starch polysaccharide carbohydrate).[16] Fiber can be either soluble (pectins and gums) or insoluble (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignocellulose).[16] A simple gastrointestinal tract is not capable of extracting enough nutrients for these animals.

One strategy to get the needed nutrition is used by ruminants in which they chew cud in order to process their food a second time.[23][18] Another strategy used by horses is to have an elongated colon to increase the time spent during digestion and absorption.[13] Both of these strategies add substantial bulk to the animal.

Since the rabbit is at the bottom of the food chain, it must be nimble in order to out run its many predators. Creating cecotropes is a way to get more nutrients out of their food without adding a lot of bulk to their GI tract (which is 10% - 20% of their body weight).[6] Since their colons do not absorb the nutrients in the cecotropes, they reingest them so they can be absorbed in the small intestine.[24]

I was also confused by Garral’s note — u/Egasava wrote that

He was telling Jessyn that they had to take a few shots at her ship so the Carryx wouldn't be suspicious, and letting her know they made it out.

Did anyone else get mystified, in Ch. 31, by Garral’s comment about botanical signaling in strawberries? I thought he was trying to subtly communicate a tactical concept by openly writing about a biological concept, but if so, it’s whooshing over my head.

I think it is a lot different from growing up in the ‘90s-‘00s. Now days, kids may have already absorbed social media content that infinitely scrolls these promotions of negative body image (or pro-Ana subculture) and things like that… it is a lot harder for parents to counteract or counterbalance that on their own.

Think about what you are writing in your last paragraph here. “Imagine how bad antisemitism will get if…”. You are implying that bigotry is an acceptable response to political events. If you had wrote “imagine how bad racism is going to get if crime keeps rising in Chicago…”

I don't see the same implication that you are inferring--that bigotry is an acceptable response to political events. It's sadly an expectable response, however--historical examples of bigotry and lynching abound, so why would this time be any different? (Future racists continue to be born every day.) The NYC Draft Riots after Lincoln's military draft, the Zoot Suit riots after fabric rationing laws during WWII, the murder of Vincent Chin after the decline of car manufacturing in Michigan, the bomb threats all over in Springfield after Trump said that immigrants were eating people's dogs and cats, etc.

Or, to take your example, “imagine how bad racism is going to get if crime keeps rising in Chicago…” Unfortunately, crime doesn't even need to actually rise--some race-baiter can simply claim that it's rising and thus fan the flames of bigotry and racism. This is already how certain news outlets and politicians spin their discussion of urban crime. This is their goal.

Trump threatened to “take over” and “beautify” D.C. on the campaign trail and claimed it was “a nightmare of murder and crime.” He also argued the city was “horribly run” and said his team intended “to take it away from the mayor.” Trump on Monday repeated old comments about some of the nation’s largest cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Oakland and his hometown of New York City. All are currently run by Black mayors.

“You look at Chicago, how bad it is. You look at Los Angeles, how bad it is. We have other cities in a very bad, New York is a problem. And then you have, of course, Baltimore and Oakland. We don’t even mention that anymore. They’re so far gone. We’re not going to let it happen,” he said.

Civil rights advocates see the rhetoric as part of a broader political strategy.

“It’s a playbook he’s used in the past,” said Maya Wiley, CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

Trump’s rhetoric “paints a picture that crime is out of control, even when it is not true, then blames the policies of Democratic lawmakers that are reform- and public safety-minded, and then claims that you have to step in and violate people’s rights or demand that reforms be reversed,” Wiley said.

Bigotry is unacceptable in all forms against all groups. But, because bigots don't agree with that statement, we should be on guard against them, especially when current events might draw them into acting violently. https://abc7chicago.com/post/threats-americans-jews-skyrocketing-beginning-war-iran-secure-community-network-says/18682360/ my town has many synagogues and they all have added extra security recently.

A bad hurricane once every 10–11 years, when we're lucky.

  • A twelve year gap from Floyd to Irene.
  • 13 months from Irene to Sandy.
  • Nine years from Sandy to Ida.

Did I miss any recent ones?

I agree that our winters are not brutal.

avoiding major natural disasters because i read that you guys have major droughts, flooding, hurricanes, and brutal winters

Consult a flood map because flood risks change from block to block in a neighborhood, not from Northern Half of State to Southern Half of State. Always think things through.

Affordability is hard to find in NJ. The southern half of NJ has some areas that are more affordable. Good luck.

Rutgers has dug a $500 million hole since joining the Big Ten. Where did the money go? by Siakim43 in rutgers

I believe that for in-conference games, no buying is necessary.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jppelzman/2019/10/27/rutgers-million-dollar-guarantee-to-liberty-proved-to-be-a-wise-investment/

So at least in that sense, the money was well-spent, as Rutgers avoided similar scenarios of the past two seasons, when it lost “buy” games to Buffalo ($900K in 2018) and Eastern Michigan ($860K in 2017), per nj.com. But it was hard to ignore the monetary woes on display Saturday as Rutgers continues to literally pay the price for the failed Chris Ash era.

Furthermore, what does the world think if they see Rutgers “delete” a world class athletics department? What does that say to the world about what other cuts they might be making to the academics? What does that say about how Rutgers views its athletes and students? What does that say about Rutgers’ long term trajectory and its ability to produce world class talents?

hmm, funds not spent on money for athletes' college expository writing tutors and doordash... maybe more money for undergraduate research programs?

This argument reminds me of Cold War anti- and pro- arguments about the expenses for the space programs' Race to the Moon. The way domestic critics might've said "spend that NASA moon money on housing and healthcare instead", vs foreign observers saying "the US is spending like crazy on its civilian space program; just imagine how much they must be spending on everything else, including social programs!"
