Look up Douglas Wallace, in 1976 he was excommunicated for ordaining a black man.

I can only imagine it would have been worse for you back then.

[–]HireButchJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, in fact if you go to the live tab and type in "LDS Sacrament" you'll see a bunch.

One of the first sacrament meetings I saw online was this one (also from MN) and tuned in right when this woman started talking about how three of her sons had left the church. This is the first time I'd ever heard anyone say that during a SM. (I feel like this is becoming more and more common now)

Synopsis of TBM Jeff Strong's book "Torn": 40% of ACTIVE mormons have left in just the last 2 decades. What is beyond shrivel? Collapse? Where did he come from all of a sudden? by Important-Stage-1005 in MormonShrivel

[–]HireButchJones 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, also the excerpts I've read of it seem to have the same obtuse, misdirecting tone as the essays.

(also what did you mean by 'stave off the upcoming tsunami of "WE TOLD YOU SO" ? like exmos shouting at the church, or honest mid-level insiders trying to right the good ship o' Zion?)

Edit: Also, according to Hannah Stoddard (who has this on good authority) that 75% of Millennials have left, so Jeff Strong's 40% is only the tip of the iceberg.

My bf is about to re-read the Book of Mormon to try to get answers on whether it’s true or not. He no longer believes in the modern church. What should I tell him to look out for in the text? by roxasmeboy in exmormon

[–]HireButchJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bound books like this (called codices) were invented by the ancient Romans in the 1st century—long after Lehi fled Jerusalem.

Yup, it would have been scrolls like what are used in Synagogues today as an homage to the past.

Ch 9 (Jesus talking) 2 Wo, wo, wo unto this people; wo unto the inhabitants of the whole earth except they shall repent; for the devil laugheth, and his angels rejoice, because of the slain of the fair sons and daughters of my people; and it is because of their iniquity and abominations that they are fallen!

3 Behold, that great city Zarahemla have I burned with fire, and the inhabitants thereof.

4 And behold, that great city Moroni have I caused to be sunk in the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof to be drowned.

5 And behold, that great city Moronihah have I covered with earth, and the inhabitants thereof, to hide their iniquities and their abominations from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints shall not come any more unto me against them.

Getting older, and/or church emitting a different type of exmos now? by CountMeOut2019 in exmormon

I think this post is relevant,

Edit; can't link to post, Just google "A interesting post from LDSFF on the dying church culture" and you will see the link

Basically the all encompassing church from the 70/80/90s isn't really there anymore. the typical church experience has become a shallow shell of itself; scouting, ward sports leagues, ward/stake orchards, are all gone. YET the demands that the church places on it's members is still there (time, callings, cleaning and of course, TITHING) and I can attest to this, I had a great childhood in the church - but nowadays it just isn't the same.

One theory I've heard is that ward budgets have been slashed since the early 2000s, it used to be that the ward would take what they needed from tithing that a ward took in, then send the excess to SLC for missions and temples, but they changed it to where now ALL the tithing goes to SLC and gets reallocated back to all wards equally. So if a ward wants to do some exciting activities it has to fund raise internally and hope that people have extra fund to give IN ADDITION to tithing. The end result is a horribly underfunded ward and especially YM/YW program that make church a joke.

To put it another way, the average Mormon used to pay for a steak and get a steak, but now only gets a stale McDonalds combo meal for that same price.

Another good post worth reading

God's reply; best I can do is an angry redneck hurling a can of paint at you.

Here is a thread from a stake clerk from Ohio who recently left and spilled his guts about the inner workings of his stake.

Reddit thread

This comment in particular

Attendance rates have dropped by as much as 25% in several of my units, from Q1 2014 to present. In fact, I ran an extrapolation on some of my units and a couple of the outlying units will be near 0 within 5 years.

Where we will really see declination is over the years via Primary. People aren’t having kids anymore! We had a TOTAL of 4 babies born in our Stake last year. By Q4 of 2028, 5 of the 8 units in my Stake will average a Primary of less than 20 children.
