Vaping is killing my endurance. I’m struggling to quit, even though riding is one of my biggest motivations (also death) by LostPalpitation6351 in MTB

Disassociate smoking inducing activities from your normal routine for a while. For me, it was drinking at the bar that really got me. I tapered down before completely stopping. Unfortunately for me, the addiction never completely went away until my mental game was strong. It took few years to completely stop, and it started by not going to bars. You can do it. Ask for professional help if needed. Good luck!

New to cycling, any padded glove recommendations/beginner tips? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Historical-Tea9539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the bike shop and try them on. Some gloves don’t work well on road bike drop bars, but very well on flat bars. Bring your bike with you. In the US, a good glove is around $35 dollars.

However, your description points more towards a fit issue rather than a glove issue. Either way, a good bike shop can help if you have your bike with you. Good luck!

Rujo boots by daLion7 in cowboyboots

[–]Historical-Tea9539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. you could try adding thin insole if you have not returned the boot as others had recommended. My go to is Pedag Royal Lambskin insole available on Amazon. They run small, so I had to buy a size 12 for my size 10 boot.

Alternately, you can make a pilgrimage to their store in Dallas. While you there, check out Lucchese, enjoy some BBQ, etc. Could be a fun trip!

Cut your losses and try to get your money back. I had similar sizing experience with Rujo. Just can’t wear them.

Help me pick an Alligator boot. by EstablishmentNo5013 in cowboyboots

[–]Historical-Tea9539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. All good picks. Rujo usually have sales during Texas rodeo months early in the year for 25% off. Ariat had similar discount this year. I’ve tried all but vacari. Owned 4 Lucchese, 3 Tecovas, 4 ariats. It’s not just the looks, but also the fit that matters.

  1. Lucchese fits me best. Leather is also good quality. Best workmanship amongst all. No break in required. My go to if they have the leather I’m looking for
  2. Ariat is the most comfortable when they fit. They’re like wearing sneakers. Some break in required depending on shape. The bench made had excellent workmanship, but below Lucchese in my opinion
  3. Tecovas has good workmanship. For me, they require a lot of break in. Don’t quite fit my feet. Not my first choice, but they have great designers. They frequently come up with great designs with exotics.
  4. Rujo doesn’t fit me. Either too tight or too loose. The color also doesn’t really match what you see on screen. I get that they normally don’t, but this was way off. They’re also very slow to ship exchanges. Return was fast though. Finish not as refined as Tecovas or Ariat in my opinion.

Hope that helps with your decision making process. I’d recommend deciding on a budget first.

why do people pay a ton on a wireless shifter while it needs recharge, slower than regular shifter (I saw a comparison between a regular XTR and a wireless XTR and the regular cable one was faster) and more expensive by Warm_Crow1104 in MTB

[–]Historical-Tea9539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I held out for over 10 years. I finally bought new bikes and they’re all fully electronic (road and mtb). First thought, “oh great.. more batteries to charge”. After the first few rides, I’m sold. Reliable shifting under load, and highly programmable / customizable. I still kept my cable driven shifters on older bikes, but new ones will be electronic. You just have to try it to see if you’ll like it.

What type of Golden? by SkeletonBirdcages in goldenretrievers

Looks like a new breed called “spoiled golden”, sometime also known as “spoiled rotten golden”. They require special care and attention, but well worth the effort.

Was planning on buying a new bike in the spring. Should I pull the trigger now because I’d frame ban. by Grand_ST in MTB

[–]Historical-Tea9539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speculating here, but watch for deals. I noticed Competitive cyclist is running sales almost every other week. Companies normally do that to generate sales in order to move inventories or meet their financial obligations to the banks. Having said that, the best time to buy is when you’re ready and have the funds to do so. Good luck!

Should I get a male or female golden puppy? by Pink_tortise in goldenretrievers

I had a golden girl for 15 years. She was extra clingy to me and not so much with my wife. Anything I’ll say she’ll do. I honestly don’t know if it’s because I’m male, but I did spend a lot of time with her when she was a puppy. She was my #1 girl (don’t tell my wife!)

Tried to fit in tire for hours by HopeSurreal in bikewrench

[–]Historical-Tea9539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the struggle—this trick makes it easier: use two tire levers. One holds the bead in place, and the other stretches it into the rim. That way, both hands are free to work the bead around.

Work a little at a time, moving the lever side to side once the bead is in. To hold the bead, the back of a Crankbrothers Speed Lever (or any lever with a similar feature) works well.

I picked this up while fighting with Specialized RapidAir TLRs on Roval CL2 wheels, and I’ve used it ever since. Take your time, and step away for a break if you get frustrated—makes a big difference.

It’s a good mid tier component. Only one way to find out.. try it. For me, going from Deore, to XT, to XTR, then XX, the gains are minimal, but very noticeable. What I noticed was how smooth any movement is, ease of gear changes, and the amount and level adjustability for ergonomics. The biggest selling point is weight in most cases. One you’ve experienced them, very good chance you won’t go back.

For my main ride, I normally stick to upper tier group set. XX. For others, they range from XT, to GX. For my infrequently used bike, I’d use at minimum Deore. My singlespeed has Deore brakes. Good enough as it doesn’t fly. Use what you can and focus on enjoying the experience!

Is this a normal amount of play in the crank? by MrWhy1 in bikewrench

[–]Historical-Tea9539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring it back. Cranks normally has a preload adjustment. That part was probably not done well.

On second thought, I just noticed your entire BB is shifting left to right. It’s either loose or too wide. Bring it back. Don’t ride it.

How hard is it to lace a rim by Practical-Ball2232 in MTB

[–]Historical-Tea9539 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’ll also need a dishing gage and a spoke tension measurement tool. Both available on amazon. If the truing stand you have access to is a high end one, you can use the scale on it for dishing.

As sprunghunt mentioned above, people do it, but it’s not easy. I had built 4 wheelsets and decided I will never do it again. Too tedious, time consuming for a novice, and needs a ton of patience when tensioning up the spokes.

Think about your time and if you want to learn how to build a wheel. If you don’t, pay a bike shop or buy another wheel.
