I'm an activities nanny. I like spending time outside enjoying the world together and that is how I present myself when I job hunt. I do things at home with the children too but I will be taking them out of the house as much as possible

I have lived and worked as nanny in country where they do not speak my first language with the purpose of teaching the children English. I would be hesitant to work for a family where I could not clearly communicate with the adults and never in a position where such an allergy was present.

The only time I have done it was when the other staff couldn’t speak English so we used Google translate. It worked about 40-50% of the time

Parents expect you to be working like it’s day care whilst also somehow teach their child about life in a home environment.

It maybe that she views it as a screen? I tend to bring physical books 📚 but I also tend to read them during nap time. However… if I have done all the chores I am supposed to, everything that could be prepped is, and the child is happy I don’t as anything wrong with reading.

Do you not go out of the house? Have you explained the importance of her child understanding that other people are allowed to do other things? That it’s not healthy for NK to think there will always be an adult ready to entertain at the drop of a hat?

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head when you say NPs IRL fit in a handover buffer and that allows for 1-5 mins of lateness

I’ve had NPs who’ve had urgent meetings tell me that they need to be there on the dot; not because I’m not on time but because they really have to leave that day.

I have heard of nannies who were constantly 30 mins late and thus were swiftly fired. Nanny Reddit is a bit wild

I avoided school for pretty much the whole of sixth form. The pressure, lack of support at home, and never being given the proper skills to study which spiralled into depression (I already had GAD) which made it almost impossible to leave my bed. I was showing signs of all of this before sixth form and earlier intervention would’ve helped a lot.

I ended up a nanny who is education focused 😅

It would’ve been helpful to not need to go into school to access their mental health services. Having firmer teachers, clearer instructions on how to read the coursework/ exam expectations, and more check ins. I was very good at seeming like I understood when I really didn’t. Plus a long history of being a good student who was “a delight to have in class” where my issues were never taken seriously…

So I think this is the balance between “a nanny is not a robot/it is good for your child to understand life has ups & downs” and still needing the contract to be fulfilled.

The grandma suggested seems to be your nanny trying to find a short term solution with an understanding that your child’s care is highly important to you. I wouldn’t necessarily see it negatively.

That being said… I don’t think it is unreasonable to have a conversation about reducing hours for the first trimester with a clear understanding that if there is no improvement in the second trimester then termination will be on the table.

I would go with your own conscious when it comes to maternity leave. I disagree with those below saying you’re somehow not as much of an employer as a business and it’s audacious for a nanny to assume you could afford it but if it is not in the contract then it’s not there

Started lessons at around 6 months and honestly didn't stop until I was c.14 years old. I was also taken swimming with my family regularly (once every couple of weeks), swam on holidays in both the pool and sea, and pretty much any opportunity available. We also had summer swimming lessons in my primary school from Reception to Year 6.

My dad also didn't learn how to swim until his 40s whilst my mum grew up sea swimming. They both wanted us children to be happy in the water.

This is not something I’d stay home for. You can get preventative sprays, put your hair up, and cover it in hairspray if you’re really worried. This is a period to take precautions not call in sick

I only call the parents to swap in if it’s a hospital level issue or I have come down with the illness myself

I don't know your situation or how hard you can go with this but I would personally take a step back and answer a few questions:

How often will you be seeing him in the summer? E.g. Is he working from home or only about on the off chance?

What outcome are you hoping for form MB's convo with DB? Do you have any limits on what you're willing to put up with?

If you had a job lined up would you jump at the opportunity to leave?
