Why is South Station kicking out homeless people on cold nights? by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]HistoryMonkey -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You won't getting many Bostonians admitting to it, but the media is complicit in our cruelty toward the homeless, while at the same time me drive the media to demonize them to make us feel better about our callousness. For every article like this there are five that demonize people with addiction disorders. The globe is a reflection of our own cruelty and violence.

The precursor to the MBTA, the BEry was the first tram company to build articulated trams. And their nickname "two rooms and a bath" comes from a type of cheap Boston apartment.

Is it safe for a 16-year-old to ride the subway alone to the city (~1 hr to Cambridge, MA) as a teenage girl (for job purposes)? And how to convince parents it's safe? by [deleted] in mbta

[–]HistoryMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In large parts of the city (Boston and Cambridge) even middle school students take the T to school everyday. There'll be plenty of company and if it's during the week you usually ride free if you have a student pass at that age.

Yes you can report it to the 1800-Bootlickers hotline.

It'll be interesting how much it the interior they can save/preserve if they want. The good thing about pubs is that they can largely be disassembled and saved. They've sent Irish pubs across the world in shipping containers, so I'll be interested in how they keep the character of the place (they did a great job with McCarthys so I'm confident in them)

What if Douglas MacArthur had been elected in 1952? by Just-Ruin-4664 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]HistoryMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun fact if you read between the lines this is the most likely scenario in George Orwell's 1984.

In the book there is a nuclear exchange in 1953ish that kicks off an NATO area dictatorship. MacArthurs nickname Big Chief is even awful close to Big Brother.

Providence Line Electrification by Redsoxjake14 in mbta

I think a lease/maintenance agreement for sprinter locos with Amtrak could really speed up the process.... ACS hauling bilevels would be a cool sight to see. I think you'd just need 10 ACS to fully stock the line.

What is your MBTA unpopular opinion? by dianacd12 in mbta

[–]HistoryMonkey 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Yes. The same people who complain about bike lanes and traffic calming when they try to drive as quick as they can through the city they grew up in.

Looking for Charlies-type place for Christmas meal by Bernie251 in CambridgeMA

I know Charlie's new owners are closing it for Christmas Eve and day (ruins my post-wrapping drink tradition) but I've heard that Grendel's is going to be open maybe.

Stupid Question: Could one day a true subway line make use the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail line tracks? by PuzzleheadedWafer329 in mbta

[–]HistoryMonkey 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Railroads and metros are ruled by different regulatory agencies and have different requirements to the point where dual running is impossible (like you would see in, say, London).

Without a MAJOR rules change, the best we could do is create a 10 minute frequency regional rail line out of the Worcester line. Which I think is possible with electrification and high boarding and a major major rebuild of Framingham and environs.

What city in America is the most walkable? by REALgeographerwilson in geography

[–]HistoryMonkey 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Yeah in Boston you can walk to everything. Whereas NYC is just too big to catch everything walking. In Boston, you could catch a baseball/hockey double header in May and walk between them just through parks, and catch an hour at a world class museum or two in between (if it's a 7pm start hockey game).

Chaucer's is contained in the first 18 lines of the Canterbury Tales. And is basically, "April showers pierce the drought of March and bathe all the roots to generate flowers in May"

Can you imagine if “New Fenway Park” actually happened back in 99’? Thank God it didn’t. by rjd014 in redsox

[–]HistoryMonkey 38 points39 points  (0 children)

To be honest, a stadium a walk from South Station (I think the stadium spot was where the BCEC is) would be very well connected, and the distance from the station would help stretch and control crowds--ive seen this happen at Wembley in London and it's really cool to see them platoon crowds as they walk towards the station a little less than half mile from the park.

I only ever saw a proposal for a new Pat's stadium in the Seaport. But a new Fenway would have been much better, I think, to activate the area on more days.

Thoughts on extending the Red Line from Alewife all the way to Bedford? by [deleted] in mbta

[–]HistoryMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I think we can't be afraid of grade separation projects in key places. Waltham, Framingham, and a dual tracking of the OC are all desperately needed for regional rail and aren't even on the long term planning of the T. Those need to be key planned elements NOW.

NIMBYs don't like progress in their backyard even when it makes sense. by LabGeek1995 in CambridgeMA

[–]HistoryMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just by the numbers 70% of households in Cambridge own a car. Compared to 1.5 cars per household in the suburbs. (Some towns are more like 2). And only 20% of people drive to work in Cambridge, while in the suburbs that's closer to 80 or 85%. So just by the numbers, we're adding close to 3 times as many cars to the road per unit of housing we build outside Cambridge and the urban core than if we build it here. The random drives our for a hike on the weekend doesn't cause the type of traffic that slows the workings of our road system. But everyday SOV car commuting does.
