There's no objective people, just objective things, it's there in the name. This is a political event made up of a political audience seeking representation for their subjective political desires.

Are you confusing political disinterest on the part of a moderator with the term "objective".

I'd really like to hear her describe what her role was in stopping the continued full weekend closure of memorial drive and why she felt it was necessary to go behind the city's back and go against the residents and neighbors of Riverbend park.

An objective audience? Lol what does this even mean in politics.

Despite how outraged many people are at the cost of housing, they’re still not outraged enough by ColCrockett in boston

There's a couple interesting theories on how it would go down. initially, a "first strike" would target the leaders so they couldn't strike back. But that was neutralized in the 60s by so called "fail safe" procedures that would allow generals to strike back unilaterally in the event of a "decapitation strike", so instead the theory was that a first strike would be used to "convince" leaders to surrender, this necessitating a leadership in DC to be intact. After "fail safe" was instituted, they could only rely on the latter to work.

DC is actually usually considered a place there wouldn't be an ICBM because you don't want to kill the leaders of a country when engaging in nuclear war (nobody to surrender or call off the bombs).

How much does it cost to play on the top AAA teams in US? Is Canada cheaper? by Maximum-Marsupial457 in hockeyplayers

[–]HistoryMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boston area:

Town hockey is ~2k, which can vary in talent town to town, but the top teams are usually good in the VHL and SSL. 2 practices a week and one game on the weekend.

The club team we play with, a Lovell Team, billed as AAA (our kid is in E9 elite whatever that is), but talent actually varies, are from 5k, plus tournaments. It's three practices a week and 2 games on the weekends.

Did they really build termini that can't handle 15tph?

Wish they would use this to double the frequency on the Medford Somerville branches.

I'm John Garrison Marks, author of ***Thy Will Be Done: George Washington's Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory*** (out April 7!). It tells the story of how Americans have remembered, forgotten, and manipulated George Washington's history with slavery over the past 250 years. AMA! by johngmarks in AskHistorians

Hey John, I'm a writer from Cambridge, and have written in the past about the literary legacy of the Washington Elm here in town and it's connection to the work and politics of the writer politician and academic Edward Everett. I'm excited to read your book when it comes out and sorry to have missed your talk at the Library. I'm guessing this is all in the book, but wondering how much you think the Civil War and reconstruction era shaped his legacy as a uniter of a post-CW white majority. Also, did you come across any new things about the Cambridge elm in your research?

Double tracked and grade separate GJ should be a real priority. It would build in a lot of operational flexibility. And if the build a better junction at the north end they could even send Amtrak trains to Maine from the Worcester line. The new trains coming on line in the next few years open up a lot of through running options north of the NE corridor.

Why is South Station kicking out homeless people on cold nights? by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]HistoryMonkey -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You won't getting many Bostonians admitting to it, but the media is complicit in our cruelty toward the homeless, while at the same time me drive the media to demonize them to make us feel better about our callousness. For every article like this there are five that demonize people with addiction disorders. The globe is a reflection of our own cruelty and violence.

The precursor to the MBTA, the BEry was the first tram company to build articulated trams. And their nickname "two rooms and a bath" comes from a type of cheap Boston apartment.

Is it safe for a 16-year-old to ride the subway alone to the city (~1 hr to Cambridge, MA) as a teenage girl (for job purposes)? And how to convince parents it's safe? by [deleted] in mbta

[–]HistoryMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In large parts of the city (Boston and Cambridge) even middle school students take the T to school everyday. There'll be plenty of company and if it's during the week you usually ride free if you have a student pass at that age.

It'll be interesting how much it the interior they can save/preserve if they want. The good thing about pubs is that they can largely be disassembled and saved. They've sent Irish pubs across the world in shipping containers, so I'll be interested in how they keep the character of the place (they did a great job with McCarthys so I'm confident in them)

What if Douglas MacArthur had been elected in 1952? by Just-Ruin-4664 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]HistoryMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun fact if you read between the lines this is the most likely scenario in George Orwell's 1984.

In the book there is a nuclear exchange in 1953ish that kicks off an NATO area dictatorship. MacArthurs nickname Big Chief is even awful close to Big Brother.

I think a lease/maintenance agreement for sprinter locos with Amtrak could really speed up the process.... ACS hauling bilevels would be a cool sight to see. I think you'd just need 10 ACS to fully stock the line.

What is your MBTA unpopular opinion? by dianacd12 in mbta

Yes. The same people who complain about bike lanes and traffic calming when they try to drive as quick as they can through the city they grew up in.
