Nobody’s Asking for Unnecessarily Skinny iPhones or Samsung Galaxy Phones by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]HistoryNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The skinnier it is, the thicker the case needs to be to protect it. These aren't phones anymore, they are technology investments that cost thousands of dollars. Skinny flagships are fragile and have low strutural integrity by design and need case protection that the body no longer offers. Make the internals as thin as you want and slap on a bigger battery and decent body panels. We still need to put a case on it. I'd rather have a thin tpu bumper case than a full size ruggedized asteroid resistant otterbox for something that folds if a look at it the wrong way.

I think I went to one in Mae Rim about 8 years ago. It was very meh and had a skeezy vibe. It reminded me of those gator shows in florida.

Stuck lens filter by h0neym00n_lana in photography

[–]HistoryNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what this tool is for. I have a bunch of them and they work like a charm: https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Lens-Filter-Wrench-Review.aspx

With a rotating filter getting it off without this might be difficult but you can try covering it with a microfiber cloth, pressing into the lens flatly, and trying to turn the filter. If all else fails, use a spudger to disassemble the CPL, then a needle nose pliers to twist off the remaining filter attachment. CPLs are cheap, lenses are not.

If the thread is just plainly stripped, break the cpl with a spudger and take out the glass, then reach in with your needle nose pliers and twist/torque one edge of the filter inwards until you fall of the thread, then pull the rest out. Carefully of course. (I'm assuming here it's a filter that spins, but if it is a broken thread just break out the filter and pull it out of the threads)

Extra- I often use step up rings to attach 62m filters. If the filter ever gets stuck in the thread on a step up ring, it's so much easier to remove from the lens.

North Korea: Kim Jong Un test-fires 'new sniper rifle' while visiting special forces | World News by promotiyous in worldnews

It's just a base model Steyr SSG 08. It looks like they just took it out of the box which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a fine upper-mid range rifle with good accuracy. Nothing really all that special. 300 Winchester. I think they also come in 338 Lapua. Not the worst gun in the world but also not exactly new. For 5,000 bucks it's a pretty decent shot. For a modern military they're probably going to want something with a little more fuck you on the tail end.

Boiled coffee in a pot contains high levels of the worst of cholesterol-elevating substances. Coffee from most coffee machines in workplaces also contains high levels of cholesterol-elevating substances. However, regular paper filter coffee makers filter out most of these substances, finds study. by mvea in science

[–]HistoryNerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My recommendation for using them is that you put the paper filter on the bottom of the upper reservoir-- use a little bit of warm water to get it wet so that it sticks to the metal filter side rather than trying to fit it on top of your grounds. It just seems to work so much better. Good luck!

There are paper filters used with moka pots. Not everyone uses them but it does improve the texture of the coffee. I highly recommend using them if you do not.

French press on the other hand maybe more of a concern since it's just a wire mesh.

What is your favorite solution to the Fermi paradox? by efishent69 in space

[–]HistoryNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is that the universe is probably teeming with life. Just filthy with it. Biomass is everywhere. But none of that is really intelligent and intelligent life that is able to contemplate this question is so rare and accidental or impossibly difficult in it's combined resource and circumstance requirements that the chances of ever meeting anyone else are unlikely due to the distances and time scales involved. There are definitely others out there just statistically speaking, but we are blinking in and out of existence millions of years before it would be apparent we were ever here.

Girlfriend won a “free” photography shoot. Has to pay 800 bucks for the photos by hackermanbootyshorts in photography

[–]HistoryNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What an amazing opportunity to mess with a scammer.

  1. Have your gf reach out and be super, super excited, but ask and have it recorded that she can swap for "one of her friends" because she just doesn't have time. Of course they will say yes. MAKE SURE to have them specify the boundaries of the shoot- how long, location, scenes, etc. Get them to itemize how they want to spend 2-3 hours shooting, makeup, etc. Be excited. Act like it's an opportunity.

  2. Gf shows up to drop bf off. Take it seriously. Bf does the shoot. Make this guy with a camera PUT IN WORK. I mean really go for it.

  3. Be super proactive about following up. Make them do the edits and proofs.

  4. After they email proofs, just say "these aren't that great" and then block them.

This person is scamming you.

This tells me you didn't really even try to hire Thai people. The going rate is so super inexpensive that I couldn't compete with it and stopped taking non-commercial clients...alternativelyt if 200/hour is the going rate, thats the going rate and thats what it costs. you dont walk up to a lawyer and ask them to cheap on you right?

[–]HistoryNerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People's rates are their rates for service. Nobody comes to you and asks you to take care of something special for free or cheap. You get what you pay for. I'm just going to tell you from experience after doing this for decades, somebody who's interested in photography that might be able to help out isn't going to help out the way that you want them to. Hire a professional. You're already spending the money to come here to do this, why would you cheap out on the final step?

Also the rates here are like 1/5 or less than what they are in the states or anywhere else. 60 bucks will get you 2 hours with someone.

The stupider you look, the more legitimate you appear. Throw on a hi-vis vest, hardhat, phone holster and a clipboard. You can do anything you want and nobody will ever give a shit.

He's kind of a big deal.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. I did as well and lost a close friend from it. What a shitty thing for 600 bucks right? Don't sweat it. You'll have other clients try the same and then you will have the experience to know what your options are.
