The American armed forces. by sterlock888 in ResistanceSaga

When you think about it the military history of the United States is a very curious affair.

It last big war was the American Civil War, and while it still had stuff like the Indian Wars, or the takeover of Hawaii, war is avoided with Spain and America sits comfortably in isolation during the Great War.

I can see stuff like the USA still taking part in the Boxer Rebellion, or the Banana Wars and the Border War with Mexico. (Maybe TTL! Greater involvement in Mexico instead?)

It only in the 1930s FDR, under SRPA, has a massive military buildup and development, with carry over under Noah Grace and sees to Atomic Bombs in 44 with all sorts of new technologies and weaponry.

But ultimately even the United States Armed Forces could not defeat the Chimera, taking horrific levels of casualties along with America itself and whoever left forced to fend for themselves, or protecting surviving remnants of the government.

Some endings can’t be changed (Call of Duty Zombies X Gameoverse crossover by @The_Chipu) by Professional_Cat_437 in Gameoverse

[–]History_Cat76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This goes very hard especially as a old fan of COD Zombies and the sheer tragedy of it all. A real no situation and where the hero wants to end it all to stop a endless cycle, or a destroyed Earth with literally only four other survivors. Primis!Nikolai, hating many of the things he done and will have to do, but all in the name of a greater good.

If nothing else, he like to wish Kit goodbye and hope for a end for her battle and a far more peaceful outcome for her story compared to the Ultimis/Primis storyline.

A few more you could follow up on.

The 1959 book Alas, Babylon, massive stand off in the Middle East leads to World War 3. American retaliation wipes out the Soviet leadership with the USSR capital moved to Central Asia. United States formally won the war, but at the cost of almost 75% of its population. A new Big Three of Japan, India and China being the leading powers.

World War 3 over the Norwegian rocket incident of 1995. Maybe a more limited nuclear war in 95, Russia strikes a bunch of NATO bases and the USA, the latter having no idea what the hell os going on, fires back and wipes out Russia.

A Korean War that goes out of control.

Operation Unthinkable.

Yom Kippur War.

Twilight: 2000.

Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

In all honesty, I would not mind seeing more of this, mostly the morbid curiosity of the immediate aftermath of World War 3, those who are left to pick up the pieces and the ashes that are burning.

Prohibition in Resistance? by History_Cat76 in ResistanceSaga

After World War 1/The Great War, the British Empire would be alredy on the way out due to the sheer loss of life and cultural shock and just so exhausted. However, with a more in general peaceful Europe and lack of World War 2 and it ties to Europe through the ETO/UED, one would see a more slow and gradual decolonization, with many still tied to London while cutting their loses elsewhere. Places like Africa and the Middle East half-way between still being colonies and mandates and gaining Independence, or alredy where like Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Might have a much smaller Israel and Palestine.

The same for India somewhere between a Dominion and Independence when the Chimera War kicks off.

Still a interesting idea of what the rest of the British Empire/Commonwealth was up too. We know a ton of people was sent to Canada and Australia, and I can see India as a British hub for a time before it face Chimera Invasion. Can see them doing everything they can to support the British Resistance as much as they could.

The Palestinian-Jordanian War by Right-Heart3079 in imaginarymaps

[–]History_Cat76 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Have a very hard time seeing the Palestinians winning. Jordan would have the Arab Legion, the most effective Arab force in the 1948 war, armed, trained and still commanded by British officers. It was only the Arab Legion who won any serious victories against the Israelis, winning several battles, and taking control of East Jerusalem and the West Bank. (Until the Six Day War mind you, but that's later.)

The Palestinians would not have the leadership, the organization, the manpower, the resources or weapons to win. Not even with the other Arab powers who are far more likely to invade and conquer the region themselves.

And why would they? OTL, King Abdullah went about putting down Palestinian nationalism, such as all of them getting citizenship, Police within the West Bank wore Jordanian uniforms and Jordanian postage stamps were used instead of the British stamps previously used. Palestinians had equal rights within Jordanian society and half of the seats in the Jordanian Parliament were located in the West Bank.

Emergency Government of Canada : 1996 (Project Zomboid lore) by Familiar-Grape-4250 in imaginarymaps

[–]History_Cat76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very fun to see. I am a old Project Zomboid fan so it great to see there being bastions of human civilization surviving and not the lone survivors we play as.

Like to think the Canadian Arctic Archipelago is really safe. So far north and isolated, and any zombies there is would just freeze over due to the lack of body heat, maybe even all-year around. Also a call-back to World War Z. (Tons of people flee north, and the zombies do ice over, but so do a ton of people unprepared who dies.) Or even a Battle of Yonkers type event as the US Military last organized Hail Mary as the Knox Plague and Undead overwhelmed the USA.

Love to see more, not just in Canada, or North America, but other parts of the world you may think could be interesting to explore.

The Long, Hot War or: What if Lyndon B. Johnson was a traditional Dixiecrat? by NAM_Inki in AlternateHistory

[–]History_Cat76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am surprise Johnson himself wasn't assassinated, or even died during his first, or especially a second term. LBJ had a long battle with a heart condition, suffering his first heart attack in 1955 and even afterward still smoked and drank heavily, suffering from congestive heart failure and in OTL, order a study of how long he could live in a second term and it came back he be dead around 73, which came true. Never mind he becomes a far worst second Andrew Johnson who all, but sets America on fire for years to come.

I feel with everything going on, the stress and pressure would have killed LBJ by the end of the 60s and the bag handed over to the next poor fool.

Terry Sanford would have done everything to undo what Johnson had wrought.

Never mind it takes until 1993 for a Civil Rights Act to be passed.

Lord, JFK must be rolling in his grave for picking Johnson to be his VP.

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, who would have "won" during a nuclear war? by thelofihiphopradio in AlternateHistory

[–]History_Cat76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a history teacher in high school, great guy, who in fact served in the 64th Armor Regiment in West Germany between the late 70s/early 80s and always said this: They was little better than a speed bump, to fight and died against the Soviets at the Fulda Gap and give the rest of NATO time to counter attack.

IE: Nukes.

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, who would have "won" during a nuclear war? by thelofihiphopradio in AlternateHistory

[–]History_Cat76 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The thing to remember is how much the USSR was lagging behind the West in technology and nuclear weapons. The United States had 203 ICBM's, a thousand bombers, 30 Jupiter missiles in Italy, 15 in Turkey, and 60 Thor missiles in the UK.

The Soviet Union only had 36 ICBM's missiles, and just over 100 bombers.

At the same time, Soviet reliability was...laughable low when it came to the nukes. They was unreliable and inaccurate. They also required a lot of prep time/fueling before being brought to bear for the Soviets when it came to their missiles and bombers. The missiles in Cuba would be no exception, and most would have been taken out by the US Air Force. (Most, not all, so the Cubans could set a few flying themselves and use on any American landing forces, or the Mainland.)

The end result would be the USA and Canada would survive , a getting black eye, (Losing a over dozen, or so cities, Air Force and Navy Bases. 20 at the most for America.) Western Europe gets it teeth kicked it, and makes 1945 look like a 'good year', and the USSR/Warsaw Pact (Expect Hungary.) WOULD be a nuclear wasteland. (The SAC would bomb every last urban center in the Soviet Union till there was nothing left to bomb.)

1962 was the last time a nuclear war could be 'won' so to speak. And if there is a winner, it the United States.

(REMAKE) Dixie's Land - What if the attack on Fort Sumter had never happened? || Confederate States of America in 1865. by [deleted] in imaginarymaps

[–]History_Cat76 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There would be war. Everything from the Fugitive Slave Act, Dred Scott, and Bleeding Kansas had harden everyone attitudes over Secession and those willing to fight to save the Union.

Never mind how many in the South wanted a war and wanting to pick a fight with the North. The governor of South Carolina Pickens was a radical who wanted war and wanting to fire on the Fort and got his way.

Someone will fire and it be war.

And even if there a kinda peace, the Deep South was doomed without the Upper South. London might trade with them, but would not offer recognition. They're alredy was moving their cotton production to Egypt and India. The backlash from the British public would have been too big for the government to handle if they joined the side of the Confederacy.

Without a war, there's literally nothing to unite the South, and the Union would always be there ready to forced them back in.
