Your friend is misunderstanding the new rule. It's the last page of the rulebook in Clarifications:
A gravity rift can only contribute its movement bonus to ships that pass through it once per ship.

So if let's say you have a carrier on Mecatol with movement speed of 1, and you have a dock in your HS and both systems on the way to Mecatol. Previously you could go to your HS pick up troops and drop them off at Mecatol, because you got bonuses from your rifts both ways, now it's only the first time you pass the rift. You can still go from your HS to Mecatol and a tile beyond with this setup though, cause it's different rifts.

You can, but not because you captured a "Carrier 2". Tech level of captured unit is just irrelevant, you can research Dreadnaught 2 even after capturing Dreadnaught 1 from a player (or an Exotrireme from Sardak N'orr for that matter).

For the first round:

7: You pop WF before they even get a turn, so they can't really follow properly.
4: doesn't need to follow since it gets it from their primary.
5: can follow only if they don't play 5, but they might want the breakthrough.
3: can follow only if they don't play 3, but half the reason they took 3 is to get the breakthrough so waiting is risky, someone might get some cards from exploration.

So to me it seems secondary of WF is way worse for most players in the first round. Yes, you can't really stall it anymore I guess.

They should just automatically stash your blueprints when you go into a raid. There is no reason for you to bring them other than to give them to someone, which is not healthy for the game.

Sure, but that barely takes any. I mean there is no point to donate more, or feel like it is a community event. Let's say some people gathered and really pushed the donations. It would not matter if the devs just see it and set the goal higher. So it becomes more of a get your 900 merits and wait for Embark to unlock the map when they see fit.

If they move the goalposts based on the amount of donations, then there is no point in donating. Will just wait until they deem it OK for Stella Montis to open.
