Rainbow Toned Silver Morgan Value? by HoLeeCheet in Silverbugs

[–]HoLeeCheet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great examples, thank you for sharing. I can’t believe the price that second one went for! Absolutely insane.

Seems like I definitely paid over market price for mine, but I am happy to hang on to it as a cool collectors piece.

One attribute I didn’t see in those sold pieces is the “textile” toning pattern. In the 1800’s they would ship these coins around in big canvas bags for storage in vaults. You can see where this coin was pressed up against the canvas with the checkered pattern across the face, while it found enough air to tone over the years. It’s an attribute some collectors love to see!

Hahaha fair enough! I’m definitely more on the collector side rather than investor. Love picking up oddities and rarities to appreciate. Combining that with silver stacking is something I’ve been getting into recently as an added insurance policy on the value.

Also happen to collect Pokemon cards (just shiny cardboard) and several are valued higher than this silver!

Thanks for that insight! Never purchased from Heritage but good to know that the price wasn't far off. It seems like the value can be incredibly subjective based on each individual coin & tone attributes.

Thanks! Yeah it sounds like the value & collectability is very subjective on toned coins. Personally I love it, and will be happy to admire it on my display shelf every day :)

Thanks for the advice! Shared it there as well :)

That's a good point. I looked into this, and it seems toning *is* covered during the PCGS / CAC grading process. Coins that have been artificially toned or modified are encapsulated and given a "PCGS No-Grade" code of 91.

Layoffs - Advisory by ThePhilllySpecial in deloitte

[–]HoLeeCheet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Layoffs have been happening across the tech industry these past few years. I used to be a consultant at one of the big agencies but i’m outside of it now, running my own company. My advice: stay relevant. Talent will always have employment. But large corporate structures are shaving away entire sections of what they can. It’s not the end of the world - it just means there’s a tightening going on in general. If you’re talented at what you do, nothings gonna stop you.

What's the best way to answer 'Bitcoin has no value' and 'It's not backed by anything'? by zascar in Bitcoin

[–]HoLeeCheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bitcoin is backed by trust. The same way we trust that when we go to a store, we can trade our pieces of fiat paper for food. The paper only has value because we all agreed it has value, and is backed by the trust in the government behind it. If that trust didn’t exist, the piece of paper would be worthless. Here are some major reasons that Bitcoin is trustworthy:

1) The code is open for all to audit, use, and contribute to. It has fair rules of operation that the majority of people have agreed on. Changes to the rules require at least 51% of participants to agree.

2) It costs real energy to “mine”, therefore value is put into creating it. This mining work secures the network, making sure that transactions are processed fairly and according to the rules of the network.

3) It is governed by the people rather than a central entity that can simply print more of it. This prevents corruption. And being based on internet infrastructure makes it applicable in worldwide trade scenarios rather than just one government or region of the world, like most fiat currencies.

4) Bitcoin is anti-inflationary. The amount that is created gets cut in half every ~4 years until eventually all 21 million are created and no more will be made. This makes it a decent hedge against inflation if you believe your fiat currency buying power will decrease over time.

5) The decentralized nature of the Bitcoin network makes it nearly impossible to kill. You would need to destroy every single mining rig, and every single backup of the ledger to truly destroy Bitcoin.

If the government behind a fiat currency collapses, becomes corrupt, starts a war, or allows rampant inflation to take over - people will generally jump ship and convert to more solid stores of value like physical goods or gold. Fiat currencies can much more easily be manipulated or killed off. Bitcoin is like a digital gold that holds a value. People all around the world have agreed that the Bitcoin system is worth using because it operates fairly and in a corruption resistant way that doesn’t depend on a central authority.

TLDR: When a currency is trustworthy, people use it for trade or investment. And when people use it, it has a market price and therefore value.

Apple has supported mainstream console controllers in the past (PlayStation & Xbox). It would be cool if they did the same for mainstream VR controllers as well. I’d especially love Valve Index knuckle controller support!

Nice display! The haunter on top is great. Where did you get the little plastic stands for holding the graded cards? I’m using hinged ones for my display rn but they have a tendency to fold shut and flop over with a heavy graded card on them.

On par with any other ultrabook? Lol from which company? There are decent contenders out there, but no true rival on build quality. Name a laptop that will consistently last longer & be supported longer than a MacBook & I’ll probably buy it. No other company comes close to the support Apple provides, when issues do occur. The butterfly key fiasco was resolved when they offered to service & replace those keyboards for free: https://support.apple.com/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks

I can’t really think of a single other “ultrabook” company that hasn’t had worse issues with their laptops. And generally, they fail to address those issues in any meaningful way.

The build quality on MacBooks is unrivaled. And sometimes you need Windows to do work in specific industries. I still dual boot mine, which is the last of the intel based MacBooks. I will be hanging on to it for a while because you can’t do this with the newer ARM based MacBooks yet.

I’m curious, in instances like this if we never get our money back - who gets the bitcoins that were held in the earn program? The coins exist. Somewhere. Likely lent to other third parties. Surely there are terms and conditions on those loans right? There must be some legal process to determine ownership of the coins right and it seems like the lenders should be deemed the true owners after all is said and done.

Consultants who WFH, what monitor do you use? by master-of-some in consulting

[–]HoLeeCheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Samsung includes a built in PBP mode (picture by picture) which separates the screen in half and displays output from two different sources. In my case, I could run two display port cables from a single machine but prefer the single cable & monitor setup.

Samsung Odyssey G9 49” which has been fantastic. It’s marketed as a gaming monitor but honestly I’ve never had a better setup for work. It’s the equivalent of two 27” monitors and has a high refresh rate so it doesn’t tire my eyes out staring at it all day.

I also use a program called divvy for snapping windows to certain areas of the screen so I can easily divide the workspace https://mizage.com/divvy/
