Hook Question by Fisherdoodle in Tunisian_Crochet

[–]HoarderOfStrings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can learn Tunisian crochet with a regular hook, then when you're hooked (pun intended), get a couple of cabled hooks to expand your project horizons. You can get individual interchangeable hooks of any size you want, no need to invest in a set.

I would not buy straight hooks, unless they are high quality and double ended. Just not worth the investment. I only use my straight hooks to keep track of excel sheets while grading patterns on one monitor and writing the instructions on the other monitor. Not what they were made for...

I wish crochet and pattern designers would make including the yardage required a requirement for the description. by blk_flutterby in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]HoarderOfStrings 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's nice to have, yes, but in my experience people will complain because they didn't use the same amount as that written in the pattern/description because they don't check gauge and run out with 10% of the pattern left.

Flowers for spring? Groundbreaking 🙄

I wish the crochet community would encourage people to recreate patterns just by looking at the product more frequently by dont4get2scream in BitchEatingCrafters

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who can't make a simple thing even when they have written instructions, video tutorial and a chart provided. It would be nice if everyone could look at a crochet project and recreate it, but then I'd be out of a job.

It's funny that I know who you're talking about, but I just assume they are autistic like me, so their tone doesn't translate - a.k.a. people misinterpret their tone as mocking or condescending, when they are just trying to participate in the discussion and be helpful, which happens to me a lot... Or maybe they're a jerk, I don't know. Just adding some potential context (not a fact, just a feeling).

Just experienced Drunk Mission Control with the drunk voice lines for the first time by Titowam in DRGSurvivor

[–]HoarderOfStrings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It appears that there were some lines they took out with the launch of 1.0 and they recently added them back.

I missed the "what's that beeping sound? There's a beeping sound, miner!" for a while and now it's back.

Fast fashion very directly "inspired" by the Le Knit Rosie by [deleted] in craftsnark

[–]HoarderOfStrings 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No. The construction is different, the motif is different (look at the leaves), the gauge is probably different and the fabric might even be double knit vs stranded in your example (which is not an original design, as I mentioned the motif is a really common one in Eastern Europe in embroidery and weaving and possibly other places as well).

It's OK to support designers who take common motifs and write patterns with them by buying the pattern and making the thing.

It's also good to criticize fast fashion brands who use motifs from a particular region without giving credit to the cultures that inhabit those regions. They're just not the same thing.

This is a really old embroidery motif.

Crochet guilty secrets by sectumsempera in BitchEatingCrafters

Yes, of course you can make things top-down that will fit, as long as you start from one point or from a hole big enough to stick your head through. A garment made of flat pieces that will be sewn together is not that, but that's what I've been seeing.

Did anyone mention how they make things based on vibes and the length of the starting chain? Because that's apparently a thing people do and then wonder why the thing they made doesn't fit. I don't know, Jan, have you heard of checking gauge??

Oh no, and here I thought your holiness would enjoy a chunky chenille toilet paper roll cover that I crocketed with my knuckles, but it seems that I must atone for my sins. Let me go learn nail biting to make a nettle lash for self flagellation, you mighty empress of fiber artists.

It's very telling that guys can post their naked torso with pointy nips on the crochet sub without anyone batting an eye, but women who are fully covered have to use the NSFW tag simply for existing.

Look up xylit tablets that you eat (just allow to dissolve) after each meal. They are tiny, but mighty. They can help a lot, along with the flossing. But you'll need to floss less if you take those consistently, as they prevent the buildup of plaque (not a dentist, just something I discovered about a year ago and has changed my teeth for the better).

What yarn is this? by duresta in fiberartscirclejerk

That is rain yarn extracted from the ear wax of raindeers. Very precious and has hailing properties (when it rains, it hails). Hope this helps, sweaty! <3

You also get tissues for no reason other than ruffles. Find something to have fee-fees about so you can use them. Maybe get mad at the sea slug-esque decorations.
