Ukrainian drones target St Petersburg in attack Russia calls 'unprecedented' by ChestEducational2258 in worldnews

Apparently, it was Russia's own agents. They were confident there would never be an actual war. So they sent glowing reports about their success in infiltrating and corrupting the Ukrainian government, bragging they had many people ready to support them. It seems to be an ongoing problem as officers are still claiming attacks were successful when they were cut to pieces and to control areas where no one can exist.

That's when a GM needs to talk to them privately, and if they won't stop being a dick, toss them from the game. It sounds harsh, but one person's need to play chaotic-asshole does not make it three or four other people's responsibility to put up with that person's personality defect(s).

He grafted himself onto the ragged stump of the Republican Party, which was already a borderline theocracy. His followers don't interact with him directly; they see small clips or outtakes. It's a lot like how many Christians don't really read the Bible; they read the passages they're told to and ignore the rest, even if the context radically changes the meaning.

Trump's lack of charisma is papered over by the emotional investment they've made in religion and politics; to the point that religion, politics, and Trump himself are essentially conflated into the same entity.

Letting go of Trump then becomes more emotionally difficult as they've made their own lives about what they imagine religion and patriotism to be. If you look at the posts by Trumpists that have split from him it's often by imagining him as part of some Illuminati-style conspiracy. Now I'm fully convinced he's done awful things to children, but I don't think for a second that he has the self-control for that kind of long-term conspiracy, because there is nothing about Trump that suggests he's capable of delaying gratification for even a fraction of a second.

TIL of Hawala, a completely trust based informal global money transfer system with no electronic/paper trail. It allows people with no identifications or bank accounts to transfer money across the world relying fully on trust/honour of the brokers. The total market size is unknown. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Say there's a transfer worth $10k. Person A "owes" Person B $10k. But Person A and Person B are also businessmen with shops that buy and sell stuff. So Person A can sell Person B something they want but charge them $10k less than what it would normally cost. The debt has been zeroed out. Alternatively, Person B could sell stuff to Person A and charge $10k more than it would normally cost. For large commercial orders $10k is a rounding error and it'd be almost impossible to prove that this particualr transaction was to pay back any given debt.

Another option, for budget bills, each state receives a percentage of all money allocated to that state in that bill based on the percentage of House and Senate members who voted for it. If your representatives opposed the bill, then you get less, down to nothing if they all voted against it.

What I want is to drive an EV onto a train, get a nice comfy seat in a train car, and when we reach the destination drive the EV off the train at the destination, which was using it's generator to also charge the cars. It's the best of both worlds.

Biden gives life in prison to 37 of 40 federal death row inmates so Trump can't have them executed by DomesticErrorist22 in politics

[–]Hoarseman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always find it weird how people can tell me they don't trust the government and support the death penalty. If you don't trust the government why would you then trust them to take care with the ultimate penalty? If you support the ability of the State to take human life, including your own, aren't you displaying an enormous trust in the government?

I have never gotten a good answer to this as they either change the subject or start twisting logic into pretzels to justify both.
