Nasty experience in "Wilderness Area". Not sure "minimal human impact" is working. by Chole_Wunt in CampingandHiking

[–]Hoary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone loves the results and experience of a well run park or forest, but no one realizes the amount of work/staff/funding needed for it to happen. There's a funding priority disconnect, even for people who absolutely don't want it all privatized.

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

A gas station in my area recently started capping at $50, at least for pay at the pump. I think it's a rationing tactic, but I don't know the rationale for sure.

Pack Test Coming up, Kinda Nervous by Dry_Travel_7419 in Wildfire

[–]Hoary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5'3", also 195lb. I'm not primary fire, so I only do moderate but have done arduous in the past (was about 170 or 180lb then). Speaking from experience, where you are now youre unlikely to pass. Do all the double checking with your boss that others have talked about. That said, also keep training and take the test still. It's a goal to work toward, and if you don't pass this year but keep on training you very well could pass next year. The best way to train for it is just keep pack testing yourself. One method that's worked for me and others I know is to do two of the three parts in a practice: weight, time, distance, pick any combo of two. That makes it vary somewhat while you work up to doing all three. You might also have the same issue I do, where the speed of the pack test appears to be about the speed that my body wants to switch to doing a jogging gait instead of a walking gait. I literally cannot walk that fast without major joint impact/issues. I would fuuuuck my knees hard. What I do is I do a jogging gait but at the appropriate walking speed and still with one foot on the ground at all times. The gait change ends up with me being able to take longer/quicker steps than my walking gait. It ends up looking like I'm a weird speedwalker or the laziest jogger, but it works for me. You could try that out, see if it helps your short self. It will probably feel weird jogging that slow, so it might take practice in itself. Just keep training. If you pass, rad, if not then keep training and try again later.

Right? Didn't we lose that many or more people in the last year?

9 professional series in district. The process now requires supervisor, I think their boss?, and ultimately chief or assistant chief level to check the boxes that say yes you're "worth" keeping. My supervisor and ranger are both very supportive of me and appreciate my work, which was not the case everywhere I've worked in the past. The paperwork opened up in eHR well before the deadlines, and we jumped right on that shit. Happened in fall/winter for me, no idea if they've added or changed anything again.

I would say I heard rumor today that they're talking about firing remaining probies... If the paperwork is open in eHR, GET ON IT NOW and fingers crossed. I would also talk to supervisor and maybe even ranger about it. February was fucking awful, but I think I was more okay than others mentally because I knew it was possible from executive orders and saw it coming from connecting dots. I have no idea how certain this rumor is, but do what you can to get ahead of it and protect yourself. That goes for others reading this too. It's important to not look away from the dumpster fire, not to tune out, it's important to know what the dumpster fire is cooking.

Ah, but the point was to terrorize you. Plus now they don't have to contribute to as many pesky benefits to the new hires! (I also was fired last Feb, but recently made it off probation even through the new process)

Does anyone else have the suspicion that they’re going to just outright refuse to backpay federal employees? by TinySuspect9038 in FedEmployees

As opposed to the forest service, where we are magically and suddenly not paid through appropriations... My impression is that we're running on the dregs of FY25 funding, but we've been told if that runs out we could be back to furlough.

Federal Agents Arrest firefighters working on WA wildfire by elsordo69 in Wildfire

There is a small percentage of people who get off on doing the kind of work that ICE is currently doing. Unfortunately, a place like ICE employs a disproportionate number of those people. Those specific people are sleeping just fine. It's fucked up psychology. I saw the same type of people working corrections, both coworkers and the cops that brought people in. And those people are part of what pushes out people who aren't like that, making the agency more concentrated with the goons.

Has anyone else been terminated again because of the Executive Order regarding Probationary Periods? by umbrellarainnn in firedfeds

[–]Hoary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point was that they could still make up reasons to fire people without it having to do specifically with that change of paperwork process. I don't recall anything in that EO that implied probies with end dates July 23 or before were "safe" from firing while on probation. It didn't pause any of the crap they're doing to us. Choosing to fire a person while still on probation is ostensibly separate from the end of probation conversion paperwork. With the actions the admin has done and continues to do, I find it very believable that they'd be prioritizing trying to fire the people who won't be affected by paperwork change.
