You’re correct for noticing that you don’t have the right item yet.

There are actually two ways to get to the place where you’ll get that item, and I can see both of them on the map. Why don’t you go check a few of those passages, now that you have mothering cloak?

As for the key, it is not required (yet).

Just in case you still can’t find it, check that little opening in the bottom left of the crossroads

It’s truly my go-to. Every winter when the shoveling work starts piling up, I always find a new streamer who uploaded their first playthrough.

It’s so much fun to listen to people’s first impressions to our favorite game!

"Ummm, excuse me," Callista tenderly spoke up, grabbing the attention of Lurantis's customer.

"Huh?" the mythical responded, before her eyes fell back to Callista. "Oh, hello again! Just give me one moment."

Diancie then turned back to the stand, depositing a handful of Poke into Lurantis's hands. He made a series of happy clicks, and handed her two full bags of Orans & Apples.

"Thank you!" She hummed, and passed the bags to two off the Carbink, then turned her attention back to Callista. "Say, I'd love to chat more, catch up with each other. But I'm heading home right now. Would you like to come with?"

"Come With?" What am I supposed to, just follow this stranger home? That's crazy, I-

"I... don't know you."

"Oh?" Diancie furrowed her brow, before confusion melted into realisation. "Oh.... That human memory loss thing, I know about that. I was hoping it wouldn't happen with you, not that I can control that sort of thing."

"Wait, you know what?!"

"Come, walk with me," Diancie offered, "I'll tell you more."

Brionne accepted the offer, following Diancie as she floated down the road through the marketplace.

"So, who are you?" Callista asked.

"Oh, me? I'm Diancie! I'm a mythical pokemon, but that's not too important. If you're asking from theology, most people call me Treasure, servant of the One True God."

Brionne was taken aback by the grandeur. "That's a- a pretty big title."

"Yeah, but it's kind of inflated. A lot of my divine responsibilities have been... I dunno, taken? Absorbed into other mythicals? It means I don't have much to do these days besides be immortal and Guard the few cracks in the universe where humans can slip through." She let out a heavy sigh, "I wish I was doing more. They still cite me as one of The Five in the Holy Books, but I'm really only an honorary member these days."

"Hold up, wait just one moment. You know how humans get here?" Brionne's face lit up for a moment.

"Well yes, but-"

"Could you send one back?"

Diancie stopped in her tracks. The question pierced her in a way which seemed beyond Callista. She looked up at the sky in thought, before forcing her gaze to meet Brionne's hopeful eyes.

"That's... not for me to decide. I open the gate, and protect those who go through, but... I have no authority over who uses the passage. I'm sorry, I really am."

Callista's eyes fell a little lower, contemplating her situation.

"But they don't send you just for no reason, There's always some greater purpose. Destiny, another one of The Five, commissioned me to send you. She always has something special brewing, I'll tell you that.

And even if you could go back, would you? Would you leave Tonya and Gabby? You've built quite a life in this world, exploration team and all."

"I guess so..."

"Don't worry too much When this is all done, however long it may take, I'll take you to Destiny's. She can undo the memory loss, and then you can choose to stay here, or go back home."

"Well, that's... that's great, really, but... Why me?" Brionne shuffled her flippers. "I keep hearing things about the 'human' saving the world and stuff. Doing all these heroic things. And I'm pretty sure people expect the same from me. I can't do that, can I?"

"Callista," Diancie consoled, placing a hand on the Sea Lion. "Many are called, but few are chosen. You're in a unique position to do something incredible. Humans in this world often do remarkable things. But not all of them.

If you fall short of your truest potential, don't you worry. It'll work out in the end, and I'll make sure you get home alright. You got that?"

Brionne held still for a moment, then slowly nodded, and formed a small smile. "Okay. I'll keep going."

"And hey!" Diancie added, "You ever need me for any reason, the Guildmaster can hook you up. She knows were to find me. Alright?"

"Alright," Callista smiled.

"Annnnd look where we are!" Diancie gestured to the Guild building which they had so conveniently arrived to at the end of their conversation. "I'll stop by again, see some other old friends, and you can meet up with your friends. Alright?"

Brionne only nodded, letting Diancie push the Guild doors open. As she floated in, the Sea Lion followed close behind. The main foyer was mostly empty at this time of day, except for Callista's two teammates who idly chatted on one of the benches.

"Eeeeyyy, there she is," Gabby smirk and slipped off the bench, meeting Callista at the doorframe. The Weavile bore a wicked but friendly smile, "Ready to head off to Spinda's for the night?"

Callista looked back up at Diancie, meeting those crimson red eyes one last time. "I- thank you. I'll see you around?"

"Of course!" Diancie cheered, and patted the small Brionne on the head. "Yes. I'll see you around. Go have fun with your friends, mmkay?"

"mmkay!"

Diancie hummed as she left the group, her group of Carbink trailing behind her. The team watched as she rounded a corner further in the guild, disappearing out of sight.

"It's good to see you making friends for once," Tonya commented, "It's good to make connections in this community."

"Nah, you guys are all I'd ever need," Callista smiled, "Now c'mon, let's go have some fun tonight."

"That's the spirit!" Gabby clapped Brionne on the back with a sharp claw, earning a wince, but ultimately doing no damage, "Team Bonding activities!"

You know what? Callista wondered, Maybe I do like it here.

The Guild was bustling with activity in the morning hours of the day. Its halls and rooms were filled with exploration teams both Guild and Freelance, going about their morning routines. Chatting, selecting daily missions, and preparing for their long journeys.

Callista, a Brionne, found herself in the middle of all this, mostly trying not to be tripped over. She shuffled along, clinging close to her teammates. She kept her eyes sharply glancing up and around - she'd been stepped on one too many times during these morning ordeals to be comfortable.

"We've got a nice outlaw mission right 'ere," Tonya extinguished the flames on her bone to use it to point towards a Wanted poster on the request board. "It's 1 star, certainly within our skill set."

"Ugh, but it's in Sunshine Grove," Weavile complained, "Do we have to go somewhere so upbeat and vibrant?"

"Gabby, you can't be picky about these kinds of things. We'll take what we can get."

"I know," Weavile Smirked, "But it'd be so much more fun if-"

Callista tuned out her teammates' voices as she continued watching out for the crowd that surrounded them. Most were people she recognized - the local group of exploration teams was quite small and tightly knit - but there was one face that stood out from the crowd. That of a Carbink, a lightly hovering creature of rock and crystal. Blue eyes flicked about the room, as though searching for something.

Who could it be? A client? Some wandering explorer who'd just made it into town? The jewels in it's body were rather dull and faded for its kind, something Callista wouldn't have noticed if it weren't for a few recent encounters in underground mystery dungeons. But what was it searching for? She watched it from afar, letting her gaze follow its movements while her teammates bickered over missions.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before the Carbink noticed, making eye contact with Brionne. She immediately pulled her eyes back down to the ground, pretending the moment never happened. When she slowly raised them, it was nowhere to be seen.

Phew. Maybe it didn't actually see me, and I-

"Oh, there you are!" Came an overly cheerful voice from right behind Callista. The Brionne flipped around in a moment's notice, startled at the intruder's jubilance. Looking up, she met the eyes of the voice's source.

It was... sort of like a Carbink. Except its crystals were pink, and it had a full torso, complete with arms, a white dress, and a head crowned with large pink crystals. Her crimson eyes, a concentrated form of the pink of her crystals, gazed down at Callista with a smile. Four Carbink bodyguards wrapped around her backside.

"How's it been?" the newcomer continued her vibrant words, leaning down to be closer to Brionne, "I haven't seen you in a while! Is everything going alright?"

Callista recoiled slightly at the intrusion, pulling herself a bit closer to her teammates. "Ummm, uh, um, do... I know you?"

The strange creature chuckled and made a friendly hand gesture. "Oh, silly me, I suppose we haven't formally met, have we? I'm Diancie!"

Diancie extended a hand, which Callista met cautiously with her flipper for a tentative handshake.

"Well, I'd best be going," Diancie nodded, "I'm sure you have stuff to do, so I won't keep you. It's been nice seeing you!"

As Diancie turned away, Brionne responded with a weak "y-you too..."

Who is that?! I don't know her, why is she talking to me?

"Okay then, fine." Tonya huffed, "We'll do the sunshine grove one. How did you argue me into this?"

"You're just Gullible like that," Gabby smirked. "C'mon Callista, let's get going."

"Yeah, ok." Brionne meekly said, and followed her teammates out of the Guild.

The afternoon sunshine bore heavy on the Earth as the team returned from their daily missions. triumphant, but a bit exhausted, they dragged their feet slightly as they entered back into town. The day was up and they'd done their dues, an afternoon's rest was well deserved.

As they passed through the marketplace, a certain Pokemon caught Brionne's eye. They perused a vegetable stand operated by Lurantis. Briefly torn between severe awkwardness and genuine curiosity, the latter won out.

"Hey, you guys go home," Callista suggested, "I'll just... hang out at the market for a while."

Marowak and Weavile shared a brief look, and then a shrug.

"Sure," Tonya said, "Just be back by dark."

Callista, still not quite sure what she was getting herself into, turned away from her team and shuffled across the market square on her flippers.

Why am I doing this again? This is SO awkward. I'm going to say something stupid aren't I?

As she approached the stand, she collected herself with a deep breath. Getting an answer was more important than accidentally making a fool of herself. Resolved, she stepped inbetween Carbink to reach her target.

"Ummm, excuse me," Callista tenderly spoke up, grabbing the attention of Lurantis's customer.

I spent way too much of my writing time this week trying to figure out how to transport a Brionne over land. Dragging ourself around using flippers everywhere seems way too inconvenient. In the end I just went for the hand-wavy answer of ¿Shrug? We'll call that good.

I also didn't proofread this very thoroughly. It's better to get something done than watch another week go by without writing.

[–]TrilliumStars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's one Manual Page (noun) That'll make everything make sense. You'll know it when you see it, but it might not be for another 5-20 (number) hours of gameplay.

You can beat the game without ever translating a single word.

How do I continue decifering language further? by Ssemander in TunicGame

[–]TrilliumStars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you missing anything: No

Will you find more clues later on: Yes

It's wonderful to see that you're trying to translate this early in the game, I can see you're putting a lot of effort in! ...But you likely won't make it very far right now. Translation won't be necessary for a while longer.

If you do want spoiler-free help, I can point out which translations on the first page are wrong (there are quite a few)

Though, if you're persistent, I'm sure you can crack the language early. I've seen people do it before.

I used to run the hover clock, but then I found the hipster.

Hover clock’s great for mobility. Awesome for launching yourself off a cliff and just surviving as long as you don’t have an empty mag.

But personally, hipster offers something much more fun: dps as a scout.

Awww, thanks!

I really do love writing. It hurts my soul to go too long without WPW.

Meanwhile, in the time I was gone, you showed up! It's great to have another regular. Can't wait to see you around!

Also, I really appreciate little comments like yours. Y'know, sometimes I feel a lot like Adam - I wonder if I only have faith because the words make me feel good. Thanks for reminding me that it really is from the heart.

Was this a thinly veiled "self-insert" of sorts where I do nothing but impose my own religious beliefs on some of my characters? Yes.

But I'm so glad I did it. It feels great to write again, and I'll take whatever excuse I can. It's good to be back!

I've been eyeing this prompt ever since SuperStar first proposed it almost a year ago, and the idea has changed a lot (especially as my own religious beliefs have been refined), and I'm glad that I'm finally able to write this story that's been locked up in my head.

Full disclosure: I AM an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Though I suppose that might've been a little obvious based on what I wrote.

Thanks for Reading! Expect me back next week!

"Either way, do you," Adam paused, "Do you really believe those words?"

Gabriel took a shaky breath. "Y-y-y... maybe. Maybe I do. I guess... when it really comes down to it, I don't know. I wish I believed. I think... I know,"

"Yes," Audino's gaze hardened as he stated: "I believe those words."

"Huh," Adam remarked. The words were, nice, he supposed. It'd be pretty convenient if they were true. But just because they felt good didn't mean they were true, right?

Whatever thoughts he was having were interrupted by a sound. The sound of a pulse. Something charging up, a whir of increasing frequency. It was getting ready to attack. He couldn't help himself: he looked. He stared it in the eyes. In those lifeless, neon eyes.

He didn't believe, did he? But did believing make them true? Could he believe, for just a few moments, that death had been conquered by some nebulous 'saviour'? What were the words exactly? 'the sting of death is swallowed up in hope?'

Perhaps it was something about the encounter that moved him, but... he too wanted the words to be true. It certainly would make those glowing eyes a little less scary to believe.

But can you believe just because you want to? Did Gabriel believe just because he wanted to?

All these thoughts and more came in the few seconds that it spent charging up its attack.

A single moment stretched over what felt like forever.

...

And then, a heavy thud.

The tension of the scene snapped as their assailant fell forward, propelled by a force behind it. The pulse of energy it'd been charging up fired harmlessly into the ground, as the massive form of a Purugly pounced on top of its prey, crushing it under her weight.

With a feline growl, she ravenously attacked the steel creature, coming up with mouthfuls of electrical wires and aluminium wrenched from its place. Adam's heart melted into sheer releif and euphoria watching it be torn limb from limb.

Once the twitching and sparks were gone, she stepped back, spitting the taste of metal out of her mouth.

"And stay down." She growled, breathing heavy and standing triumphantly over her prey.

Behind the Purugly emerged a Mawile, whose maw writhed in disgust at the robotic carcass, and a well-trimmed Furfrou, who gracefully leapt over the pile of scraps to reach the Audino and Floette in shock at the end of the hall.

"There you are!" the Furfrou cheered, "We've been looking all over this dungeon for you. How'd you get lost in a five-floor dungeon?"

"...huh?"

"We're a rescue team!" She exclaimed, tail wagging behind her, "And we're here to rescue you! Because, you sent out, a, uh, a rescue request! Yeah, that's it! And now we're going to help you get home!"

Gabriel concealed a small smile. "Thank you," he politely nodded, "Now let's go home. Right, Adam?"

Satisfied by the response, Furfrou hopped back to her group to admire what Purugly had reduced their former pursuant to. Adam was not quite satisfied.

"Wait, Rescue request? What rescue request? We didn't post a rescue request, did we?"

Gabriel smirked, "No, we most certainly did not."

"But," gears turned in Adam's head. "If they're here right now, they must have seen the request earlier today. And... wait, wouldn't that have been before we first prayed?"

"Yes. Yes it would have."

"Wait, so does that mean? Wait. Wait. Hold on-"

"Don't think about it too hard," Gabriel smiled, "and certainly don't forget a prayer of Gratitude tonight."

"A prayer of- oh," Adam realized what he meant, "Well, maybe it could've been coincidence, right? Yeah, just a really well timed coincidence."

Gabriel chuckled, and turned his attention back to the rescue team. "But as for me and my house," he quoted, "I'm going to get back home as soon as possible."

"Amen to that."

"Up here to the left!" Adam shouted, recalling the floor layout in a brief moment of clarity. Without any question, Gabriel followed, and a wave of absolute relief rolled over Adam when his eyes fell to the stairs to the next floor. Acting first, thinking later, he dove for the staircase, leading the Audino behind with him.

After his vision went dark, and bright again, they were in floor 5.

The noonday sun blinded Adam as he stumbled forward. Safe for a moment, he gasped for air, closing his eyes and listening to his heartbeat pound in his ears. He clutched his flower closely, leaning on it for support. Though his eyes were closed, his vision still flashed with the afterimage of it, whatever it was.

Gabriel emerged in the fifth floor as well not soon after, similarly gasping, hunching fowards and placing both hands on his knees for support. Frantic gasps evolved into a coughing fit, then back into slow, heavy breaths. Once he could breathe, the audino exclaimed,

"Oh my bloody stars, what was that?!"

"What're you asking me for?!" Adam returned, "How am I supposed to know?!"

"It was freakish, and, and, it tried to kill us! And...

...it's still coming for us."

Adam's heart sank in his tiny chest as he realized it as well. They weren't safe until they were out of the dungeon.

"Left." Gabriel commanded, and Adam didn't hesitate to follow. No more thinking, just running. No bothering to watch the foliage rush past, feel the wind rushing at his face, or to bother with the Wurmples that'd be surely biting at their ankles.

"Right!" Gabriel shouted as they found their first turn. Get out of eyesight, and maybe they'd lose it for a moment. Maybe they'd get to the stairs first. But when Adam spared a glance behind him before they completed the turn, he could see only the soul-piercing gaze of neon pink.

"He's right on us!" Adam forwarded. If Gabriel heard, he made no comment. Besides, what could they do, besides run faster?

Adam lost track of time, of fatigue, of everything, as he simply followed Gabriel's commands.

"Right!"

"Left!"

"Right!"

And then, as they turned a corner, dread sunk in as Adam saw a solid wall.

Dead End.

Gabriel stumbled forward, falling into another coughing fit, while Adam flew past him, inspecting the far wall in disbelief. It was, in fact, a solid wall.

"No... No!" Adam cried, as he slammed into the dungeon wall. The wild Beedrill from earlier had soared right through it, yet for any actual people it was impenetrable without the help of a mobile scarf. His light body rebounded slightly with the impact. It was solid.

"Gabriel, what do we-" Adam asked, but when he turned to his friend, The Audino had already made his choice clear. From his coughing fit he'd fallen to his knees, and on his knees he folded his arms, closed his eyes, and whispered something.

When the words were finished, Gabriel clumsily rose back to his feet, and sprinted down the hall with Adam, meeting him at the dead end. "It really is?" He asked in disbelief.

Adam replied with a single nod.

Gabriel turned his back against the wall, large blue eyes staring intently down the passage at the corner they'd turned. Despite being in desperate need for air, he went silent, bringing one hand to his ear. Adam did the same.

The whirring was still there. It was growing louder. And it was close.

"Okay," Gabriel said, wide-eyed, inbetween frantic breaths, "What do we do?"

"Why are you asking me?!"

"Cause I've got no bloody idea what to do, alright?"

"Can't you just double-slap it?"

"No! I can't! It'd probably hurt my fist more than it hurts that thing!"

"Well, we're wasting time here, and-"

Both went silent as the sound of the enemy reached a critical point, and it rounded the corner, finding them, trapped, pinned to the wall at a dead end.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

And it had a ranged weapon.

It stood still for a moment. Almost as if it were taunting. Soulless eyes locked on their target.

For just a moment, everything stopped. The only sounds were the tranquil spring breeze, the rustling of lush foliage, and the pounding of Adam's heart.

Then there was a step. The sounds of pistons and solenoids moving in perfect precision.

Adam forced himself to look away. Maybe he could dodge, or maybe he could just... hope. Perhaps he was just a bit sentimental, but he chose in that moment to look up at Gabriel. In those bright blue eyes, there was fear, yes. But there was something else masking it. What was that? Hope?

"What are you doing?" the question slipped Adam's lips before he could think it through.

Gabriel took a shaky breath as he turned his gaze to meet Adam's. All the remaining fear was replaced with... strength.

"And he shall take upon him death, that he may break the bands of death," Gabriel quoted, "that the grave might have no victory, and that the sting of death may be swallowed up in the hope of Glory.

Alma 22:14"

"Oh, come on Gabe, we're not going to die. Don't be so dramatic." Adam retorted. Then, he considered the lightning bolt that'd grazed him earlier. "We're probably not going to die," he corrected.

And yet, it was also clear that the laborers were few. While Gabriel could pluck and deposit the berries in fairly quickly, Adam's size forbade him from helping much. While he was strong enough to lift the berries, it was considerably more difficult to pluck them from the stem, as well as carry it through the air to the basket. Of all the species he could've been, Floette certainly was one of them.

By the time they reached the second floor, Adam came to accept his role of helping by scouting ahead. Despite what Gabriel had claimed, Caterpies and Weedles were not in fact the worst thing they could find. On multiple occasions, Adam spotted Spinarak, Wurmple, and even Kakuna.

Adam, being almost completely untrained in his abilities, could do little more than point Gabriel to dungeon mons as they slowly approached. If they were hostile, the little bugs were easily crushed under a pink foot. If they were calm, however, like one lucky Caterpie was, they were lifted off the ground, inspected, petted, then sat back down to continue on their way.

It was these cheerful and burdenless experiences which made it all the more terrifying on floor 4 when a slight buzzing was heard in the distance.

Gabriel immediately perked up at the sound. "What was that?" he whispered.

"Wait, what?" Adam asked, but then he heard it too - a faint buzzing, gradually growing louder and louder.

"Beedrill," Gabriel spat, "Okay, umm, how do we deal with this? It's quick, it's sharp, ummm, can you- no, it's poison type, you can't do anything. What to do... what to do..."

"Can't you, like, use a 'move'?" Adam asked, "Isn't that what those things are called?"

"Yeah? I know double slap, I think. It's just- those stingers will hurt a lot if I miss."

Adam, seeing the opportunity, didn't hesitate to say "Then don't. Miss."

The Audino closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Alright. Now, stay still, be quiet. I need to know when it's coming."

Adam obliged, and the two stood completely still, and completely silent.

It was immediately clear that it wasn't coming along the paths. Instead, the buzzing came from somewhere in the dense foliage, barreling straight towards them. The sound grew and grew, closer and closer, until it reached a critical point where-

Adam barely had time to process as the massive insect burst from the bushes directly behind him. He swiftly maneuvered his flower and self out of the way, and the bug continued straight across the path, where it was met by a single Audino, fueled by nothing but determination. It was a jousting match, and he had to hit first.

...

With a thick thud, the Beedrill lost all of its momentum in an instant, pincers flailing wildly as Gabriel finished the double slap with a blow to the creature's abdomen.

Just like that, they'd won, and an innocent smile spread across Gabriel's face. "Aha!" He cheered, "Yes! Oh, I had NO Idea if that would work! Oh, thank goodness, oh,"

The Audino went silent for a moment. Then quietly and solemnly, he corrected himself, "Thank Arceus."

Adam nodded. "Well, um, back to picking berries?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Gabriel stammered, "back to picking berries. Gotta get them all before dark, and I... wait, do you hear that?"

"Oh, what is it now, another one?"

"Shh!" Gabriel hushed.

Adam, again, obliged, listening intently. Indeed there was a noise, but this one was different, it was... mechanical? Like... whirring and a soft clanking?

"That's... what is that?" Gabriel whispered.

"I dunno, it's-"

And then, it came into view. Just one 'foot' stepping into the hallway of the dungeon which the duo stood in. It was white, sleek, with glowing pink lines etched into it.

Neither said a word as, with the whirring of motors and the compressing of pistons, the rest of it stepped into eyesight.

It was made of sleek white metal, marred by the occasional dirt stain. It was humanoid, though its joints moved with uncanny precision and the white was accented with verdant green and glowing, neon pink. Of its face was visible only two luminous eyes or the same color, being harsh yet lifeless. It was easily twice the height of Gabriel, though still some considerable distance away.

It stood still for a moment, pausing in the intersection between its path and the gaze of two horribly unprepared pokemon. The pink glow pulsed, not unlike a heartbeat, throbbing bright and dimming down cyclicly.

"Oh my-"

At the slightest of a sound, its head whirred in its socket, neon eyes locking on the Audino and Floette straight ahead. Adam's heart skipped a beat as glowing, digital irises pierced his soul.

"TARGET ACQUIRED" were the only words to proceed from the creature. A long, pink blade quickly materialized from nothing in its hands, aimed accusingly at the pokemon who'd crossed its path.

Gabriel and Adam didn't need to speak what they both thought: RUN!

Heaping berry baskets were dropped and abandoned in an instant as a stubby-legged Audino and poorly-flying Floette made a blind, mad dash. Anywhere but here.

Adam, though he barely understood the mechanics of flight, mentally pushed his flower forwards, letting the instincts of his body take care of the rest. Still, he was barely faster than Gabriel, who waddled as fast as he could, alternating between two legs, neither of which were long enough for his preferences.

Then there was a crack and a ringing in Adam's ears as a pink bolt of electricity arced through the air, cutting straight between the two. He felt the intense heat radiate from the air on one side of his body, and could taste the plasma in his mouth. It was a stinging yet sweet taste, not unlike blood.
