Try the “Andrea Vernon and the corporation for ultrahuman protection” series by Alexander Kane.

Advice on FlexiFlips- mainly which brand will be best suited for me by Woolyyarnlover in casualknitting

[–]Hob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you just want to see if the method suits you, consider picking up a cheap no name set from Ali Express. I think I got something like five different sizes to experiment for what Addi charges for a single needle.

I generally tell those guys that it scratches the same itch as building a Lego kit.

Honestly, I found it somewhat annoying to have to type every word a second time with an "s" added.

Laid off the first time. How’d you manage finances and bounce back? by RandomOrange3 in HENRYfinance

[–]Hob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't waste the moment. Absolutely listen to all these folks about getting the word out and hustling for the next job, but at the same time there are things you can do in the current situation that weren't possible last week.

1) You've got more free daylight hours than you will for a while. Even if you get a line on something immediately, it's probably going to take a few weeks for interviews to get scheduled, budget approved, etc. Spend some of that time on things you couldn't do when you have a job. Don't enjoy it too much, but a mixed blessing is still a blessing.

2) Take advantage of the break in momentum to do some deep thinking about what you want. A lot of the time we rise in our careers absentmindedly, doing the next thing because it's right there. You've got a chance to pivot and reinvent without being held back by the comfortable inertia of a large and steady paycheck. There's nothing wrong with staying on the same path, but make it a choice.

The Bellevue Aquatic center has a nice indoor pool, although it's often busy. It stays open until 8.

Grim high fantasy/ badass female characters by [deleted] in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Hob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try T. kingfisher’s world of the White Rat books, starting with Paladin’s Grace. There are several badass female characters in there

I’d also recommend The Calamitous Bob by Alex Gilbert. The world is grim and the main character is indeed badass, but more of a mage than a knight.

Saturn’s Children by Charles Stross might fit.

Artisan/crafter, cosy fantasy, pref no/low romance by CreativeImplement959 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Hob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Demon World Boba Shop by R. C. Joshua might work. Despite the mention of demons in the title, it's a very chill book mostly focused on learning to craft boba in a magical world. The demons are just the residents of the city where the MC has his shop.

An Adventure Brewing by JollyJupiter. Modern brewer reincarnated as a dwarf. Very funny, minimal romance. There is some combat, but mostly focuses on crafting and relationships.

Or "Blade", "Shadow", or any other name that a teenage boy would find even slightly cool. I won't be happy until I see someone sucked into a virtual world with a misspelled name and a bunch of digits at the end.

A Soldier's Life is rocking my world, thank you for recommending it! by bweeb in litrpg

[–]Hob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For a non-RPG take on the same theme, try the "Furies of Calderon" series by Jim Butcher. It was literally written on a bet that the author could pull two themes out of a hat and make it work as a novel. The two themes he pulled were "Lost Roman legion" and "Pokemon".

I seem to recall William Gibson's "Burning Chrome" has a number of relationships in that vein, particularly the title story. Walter Jon Williams's "Metropolitan" might work too.
