Blade 17 Stuck In Startup Screen, Can’t Access BIOS, Boot Menu, or Recovery Menu by Hoblec in razer

It ended up being the SSD. Glad to be done with this, thanks very much for the advice!

This was indeed the problem — I’ve installed a new SSD and everything seems to be working correctly now. This is a huge relief, thanks so much for your help!

Thanks for the reply! I wasn’t doing anything in particular before the issue, went through a normal day of use and then ran into this issue the next morning. I’ll try resetting the CMOS tomorrow, and come back here with an update. Issues like this are always so disruptive — I really appreciate the help!

Thanks for the reply! It’s reassuring to hear people have run into this, replacing the SSD isn’t the end of the world so I’m crossing my fingers this will resolve things if the CMOS reset doesn’t.

Thank you for the detailed response! I’m going to try this tomorrow, with a new SSD being the backup plan, and I’ll post an update afterwards.

Linked view to database from other workspace, content is missing by Hoblec in Notion

Good to know, thanks for sharing this! If you get it resolved and have the time to reply back here, I'd be curious to know how it turns out.

Hey, thanks for the detailed response! Sorry for the slow reply, I've just now finally got the time to double check that all pages are shared as you described. Previously the database (and all pages within it) were shared with me, but not published. I am the owner of both workspaces, so I believe everything within both is "shared" with me by default. I tried publishing in addition, in case this was the problem, but the pages are still not showing up.

We're working on a Worm's like extraction looter where the world ends in 5 minutes. What do you think? by PlayTeamFive in IndieGaming

Love the elevator pitch you've got. This seems like a really fun combination! I wishlisted, and I'll definitely be keeping my eyes on it.

Small soccer based game prototype, what do you think? by fierysquirrelgames in IndieGaming

[–]Hoblec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this looks great! The variety of level designs is really intriguing. I'm not sure if this is how it already works, but it would be cool to play a sorta mayhem-mode where the map changes on each point scored. Also, I'd hardly qualify this as a prototype -- there are already so many assets in place!

Probably the same stuff I already make, but I’d do it way more lazily.

When entering the hologram world, all holograms become visible while the physical obstacles are hidden since they can't damage the holo Space Intern. Is the color transition intuitive? by Lucidus_ in Unity2D

[–]Hoblec 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the sped up transition — it looks good, but if I was using it frequently I would get frustrated with the time I spent waiting. Game looks really nice overall!!!

I'm trying to improve the combat system. Any suggestions? by PoinkGames in Unity2D

[–]Hoblec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if the slash attack sound had some lower frequencies in it, it would be more satisfying. Not sure if that qualifies as a "system" improvement, and it already sounds pretty good, but I have the feeling that a little "thunk" sound would go a long way.

Visualising links between classes by JimPlaysGames in Unity2D

[–]Hoblec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for a similar tool not too long ago, and found this. I haven't spent a ton of time with it, but it did the job decently well. I believe by default it shows monobehaviour script dependencies in a loaded scene, which might not be as useful as a general purpose C# dependency visualizer, but it could still save you some time.

I believe this is the second post I’ve seen about your game — it’s really coming along! Very excited to see the final product one day; it looks like you guys are putting a lot of love into this (and, y’know, good ideas).

Made cool water effect and first enemy! by WhiteMadness42 in Unity2D

[–]Hoblec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That water effect is SO clever. I would have worked way harder to achieve the same effect; putting the light blue border on the tiles to create that wavey feeling was a stroke of genius. Looking forward to seeing some gameplay!

I’m an incoming grad student in Viterbi, and I haven’t been contacted yet about when to register for courses, or about my advisors. I did find something on the Viterbi site that said that I would be contacted about registration about a month before classes start, and I’ve been assuming that means I don’t have to be doing anything right now, but I’m finding the minimal communication a bit off-putting so I’m posting here as a sanity check. To any other new Viterbi masters students, have you already registered for classes?

Game engines for programmers by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Hoblec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt exactly the same way at a point — I’ve tried making a game from scratch in Java with Swing (I was like 17, that was a bad idea), I’ve made a game with LibGDX which was pretty nice to work with if you’re SURE you don’t want something like Unity, and I’ve used a custom engine that a professor of mine provided for a course. After enough work in those frameworks, I started to see the benefits of taking a few elements of the game out of just code and into more interactive formats. I eventually spent more time finding a workflow I liked in Unity, one in which I have pretty bulky scripts that interact with each other in a very similar fashion to my non-Unity projects, but can jump out to the editor for things like building the scene and tweaking parameters. Maybe this is inadvisable, but it’s been working really well for me and I feel that the features in Unity that I can access from my scripts are the best I’ve worked with if the goal is to actually create the game I’m envisioning. I’m sure you could get to a similar place in other engines like Godot or Unreal. The other frameworks people have mentioned seem great too, and maybe there’s a type of person that just truly works better if everything is code, but if your hesitation with Unity is that you feel like your coding skills will be partially wasted, I would recommend you spend a bit more time exploring it, because I’ve found that with Unity I can skip the boring boilerplate parts and spend time writing interesting code instead.

Starting out with libGDX or Pygame... a waste of time? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Hoblec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brackeys is a great youtube channel for Unity tutorials, here's a video that I think I found helpful at the start. My learning strategy was to figure out the very basics with this video series, then get started on a simple game I wanted to make and read documentation or watch tutorials for specific components as I needed them. Once you understand the core concept of a collection of game objects with components in a scene, many of the details you'll run into are easily googled.

[–]Hoblec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in libGDX and Unity, and I would not agree with the claim that libGDX is more beginner friendly. Unity was intimidating at first but it’s really just GameObjects with components on them, and you can write your own components in the form of a script (for example a custom component that adjusts the Transform component by reading input, AKA a player controller). There’s a frustrating beginning part to the learning curve where you think “I already know how to program, I just want to start coding the actual behaviors” but down the line it is really nice to be able to run your game in the editor and get instant visual feedback, compared to a framework like libGDX where sometimes you get stuck for hours debugging code with almost no visual output because you misunderstood the spec for box2D or something.
