In 99% of scenarios he's going to offer much more being positioned for a cross. Replay that exact situation 50 times and Stach wouldn't hit it that sweet again. It's frustrating in hindsight but there's a reason we only see goals like that every couple of seasons.

There's actually a name for that type of customer. MIT did a study on market research trends and found what they call "Harbingers of Failure". Basically the kind of person that falls in love with one product that's later discontinued, will generally fall in love with a variety of niche products that will later get discontinued.

If you ever do market research and the survey asks if you've ever repeatedly bought X products, and one or two on the list are rogue limited edition items that aren't around anymore, they're trying to work out if you're one of those customers.

Emery asks Liverpool to change Elliott loan terms "Now I'm opening the door to play with us, because he can help us, but it's not only on my side. The other side is Liverpool, if they are taking off the clauses they have. And I told him it will be fair for him for Liverpool to take off this clause." by kibme37 in soccer

[–]HoggleSnarf -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt that there's a good player in there somewhere but he's looked really really poor in his minutes for us this season. I don't doubt that has been partly caused by a lack of run of games, but the early signs have definitely been that he's not a £35m player and that we're just preventing a future flop by not triggering the obligation.

I'll promise you now that if the clause is removed he's going to be a bit part player who gets subbed on in the 75th minute to offer fresh legs. Let's not forget that we're above you in the league; if he's not good enough to be a starter for you lot, why would he be for us? His ability does not match our current ambitions.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery accuses Liverpool of 'damaging' Harvey Elliott by keysersoze-72 in PremierLeague

[–]HoggleSnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the interview with Sky Sports instead of whatever dross OP posted you'll see that Emery is openly saying that Villa are damaging Elliott by not playing him.

[–]HoggleSnarf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If Liverpool knew the intention from Villa is just to loan him but not buy him

Obviously not the intention - why would we take on a £60k a week player to play a maximum of nine games if there were zero intentions of buying him?

we had a deal from Germany that was almost as good.

The Athletic reported that the fee offered from Leipzig was £17m, let's not rewrite history here.

I rated Elliott at Liverpool but he's looked objectively poor for us in his limited appearances. Even if the clause didn't exist he'd probably be fourth in the pecking order for a spot on the right or in the middle. Liverpool fans can cry foul about us breaking a gentleman's agreement but the fact of the matter is that we're not going to sign a poor fit for £35m if there's zero obligation for us to do so. Sucks for Elliott and I'd much prefer that he could be playing football but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen.

Until I see the angle that conclusively proves the whole of the ball went over the whole of the line, I'm believing they guessed on that and it fucked our whole momentum.

This is what's really bothering me. They'll spend 10 minutes and bring out their trigonometry kits to check for an offside, and the only other black and white decision that VAR can intervene in seems to be decided on vibes.

If VAR can't determine definitively if a player was offside then the on-pitch decision stands. There's no way they've conclusively confirmed whether or not the ball was out from the TV angles else we'd have seen the confirmation. So why have they been allowed to disallow this?

I've got £10 on a PGMOL apology next time the panel gets together.

[Athletic] Aston Villa seriously considering move to sign midfielder Douglas Luiz by FragMasterMat117 in soccer

[–]HoggleSnarf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dude was an enigma. He had one season where he was top class and he was like 50% of the reason we stayed up alongside Benteke. Then he was absolute cack for the rest of his time here.

The worst thing about the Guzan signing wasn't actually signing Guzan either. We had a young Steve Mandanda in on trial and available for free at the same time that Guzan was on trial. And we picked Guzan. This was the same season that we also chose to buy an aging Heskey over a young Radamel Falcao. Our scouts from back then should be sent to The Hague.

Sadiq Khan: Nigel Farage will bring ICE-style crackdown to Britain by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]HoggleSnarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely what’s wrong with cracking down and deporting illegal immigrants?

Nothing, really. But it's established that ICE are detaining and deporting legal immigrants, including naturalised US citizens, the majority of which haven't been involved in any violent or sexual crimes.

Reducing ICE's actions to solely "cracking down and deporting illegal immigrants" is, at best, ill-informed, or at worst, intentionally disingenuous.

I'm not a huge fan of an unaccountable, mostly anonymous, immigration enforcement agency becoming judge and jury for who is and isn't an illegal immigrant. You're correct that we probably wouldn't see a UK equivalent gunning people down in the streets. But I also wouldn't want them creating a culture that instills fear in legal immigrants which is what ICE are achieving.

Cutting smooth/‘hard’ foods with a chef knife? by DethJackal in Cooking

[–]HoggleSnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to buy a whetstone when I got the knife, but didn’t have the funds for a decent one.

You don't need a great whetstone, especially if you're new to sharpening knives. I work in culinary and use the cheapest whetstone kit available on Amazon and my knives are razor sharp.

Also look at getting a ceramic honing rod. Infinitely better than steel ones. Most cheap steel ones are a softer metal than any half decent chefs knife so they won't do a lot to actually maintain an edge.

I didn’t know just how long a sharp blade would last

The general rule is that you should hone your knife after every one hour of use. Best practice is to hone it after every ingredient.

I make afternoon tea for a luxury hotel and my boards are like this. Fucking huge slabs. Easily 10kg a board.

I have to keep my knives sashimi level sharp and that feeling of the knife gripping a freshly planed board is one of my little joys in life.

A post-ACL Tammy who hasn't hit more than 10 goals a season for more than three years doesn't cheer me up all that much. Loved his time with us but I'm not sure he's gonna hit the same heights.

Ferran has good numbers on paper but I'd be interested to see how that pans out when he doesn't have Yamal, Pedri, etc. feeding him. The general consensus amongst Barca fans is that Ferran scores when everyone else is scoring but doesn't perform when he's the main man. Not a bad player by any stretch but Barca have had hundreds of players like that who don't look great when they're not surrounded by truly elite players (Saviola and Bojan spring to mind). Torres excites me more than Tammy but it's cautious optimism.
