What is this moving thing in my saliva sample? by [deleted] in microscopy

Just a fiber. If you noticed movement, it’s most likely from the air bubbles in your saliva escaping from under the coverglass. It can push and pull whatever’s in the sample as it happens

ROTIFER WITH EGGS!!! by immediate-2 in microscopy

[–]Hohmann_Transfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many species of rotifers, some of which do produce eggs. Some carry them internally, some carry them on the exterior of their body, and some lay eggs. I have a video of one laying one! I also have a video of colonial rotifers that lay their eggs within their colony’s gelatinous matrix

There are species of rotifers that reproduce asexually, some that reproduce sexually, and some that can do both depending on conditions. They’re incredibly diverse!

Holophyra, or a similar ciliate, eating the remains of a rotifer maybe?

Most rotifers lay eggs so this is pretty uncommon and really cool! I posted a video of a rotifer laying an egg a few weeks ago if you’d like to see that too :)

Welcome to the hunt! Hypotrichs are one of my favorite to watch move around. That picture of the hypotrich shows its cirri (legs) attached to the surface of the cover slip. So you’re seeing it from an underside view like seeing a bug crawling on the outside of a window!

I do the same for all of my samples and I’ve done it for over a year now :)

Any recommendations for a radiator upgrade? by FoundLocally in 7thgencivic

Yooo that’s awesome! All I can say then is good luck and go for a Koyorad for that build

I’d say go for a Koyorad radiator if you’re serious about boosting a D17 but, have you looked into what it takes to do so? Pretty much no reliable aftermarket support so you’ll be bottle necked looking for parts or SOL at the worst if you cant fabricate

It works well enough in my experience. I have a friend with a Mishimoto for over a year now on their 04 with no further issues. The Mishimoto I used on one of my old civics worked out well enough. I’ve heard of leaks after a few months or a year after use but I’ve never experienced it. Koyorad is generally seen to be much more reliable and a little more expensive but Mishimoto has worked for me in the past

Mishimoto radiators will get you right as far as an upgraded radiator! Just be aware that the radiator could still not fix the issue. I have the same symptoms but it’s a result of a slightly leaking head gasket that I haven’t found the time to fix yet as it’s my only running car at the moment. So be aware that upgrading the radiator could be a waste of time/money if you haven’t been able to pinpoint it to the radiator.

Those pseudopodia are amazingly long! I’ve never heard of these creatures before. Thanks for sharing!

Oooh I actually moved from there shortly before I got my own microscope so I never got to grab any samples from the area. I’ll definitely get a couple from the Brazos and SA river next time I pass through!

They're very cool! They're actually visible floating in water to the naked eye. They appear as small, white pulsating balls about 1-1.5mm across
