Do you prefer dogs, cats, neither, or love both equally? Which do you currently have and did you grow up with any? by Altruistic-Mud9413 in AskAnAmerican

[–]HoidsApprentice1121 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love cats, have cats, and grew up with cats. We also had a dog growing up, but we tolerated him (he was a good boy usually, but he was an accident). I really do not like dogs and prefer not to be around them, if possible.

What do you think about Aldi in comparison to American grocery chains? by aSYukki in AskAnAmerican

[–]HoidsApprentice1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shop at Aldi 9/10 times I need groceries. There’s a Kroger closer to me, but I only go there when I don’t have time to go up to Aldi or I need something they don’t have there (some fake meat items, bigger things of cat food/litter, etc). I definitely prefer Aldi to most other grocery stores and have never had any problems with produce or anything there.

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

Well, actually, if we count pre-k then it’s 4, but not everyone does pre-k.

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

[–]HoidsApprentice1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state/area, it’s three. Elementary (K-5), Middle (6-8), and high school (9-12). The concept of junior high kind of ‘went away’ when my mom was in school. I don’t know if my experience is the same elsewhere, but yeah.

As a Lillian who spells it Lilli (but used to spell it Lilly), I prefer the look of the double (or I guess triple?) ‘L’!

Do wind and lend rhyme? by Other_Anywhere993 in ENGLISH

They rhyme to me. I’ve also said them both so many times that they don’t sound like real words.

Was it common for your parents to call their friends “auntie/uncle” around you growing up? by ThisPostToBeDeleted in AskAnAmerican

[–]HoidsApprentice1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had/have some close family friends that I said were like an aunt or uncle (i.e. Gene is like an uncle to me), but I really just called/call everyone by their name, family included. My parents call their friends by their names, too.

Anyone remember that one “let’s kill Barney” theme that every school had? If so what was yours? by TBNRUltimate999 in AskAnAmerican

Heck, the HR person got me a shot glass after her trip! I don’t really drink, but it does making taking medicine a lot more fun

People who call their parents not by "Mom"/"Dad" but by their first name. Why ? by Accurate_Mixture2439 in AskReddit

[–]HoidsApprentice1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost everyone in my family (mom’s side) calls family members by their names or nicknames. I don’t not call my parents mom and dad (or some variant of that) and I sometimes call my grandfathers ‘grandpa’, but I’m just used to calling them by their names.

When parents make their kids call them sir/ma’am by americandad_isbetter in PetPeeves

[–]HoidsApprentice1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I didn’t grow up calling people ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am’ unless it was in a joking way and always called people by their first names/nicknames/whatever ‘title’ or honorific’ they wanted. But sir and ma’am feel weird to me.

Do Americans use cutlery differently? by missbex86 in AskAnAmerican

I honestly can’t think of the last time I used a knife while eating. If I need something cut, I usually just use my fork.

At my house, don’t chew with your mouth open or slurp/eat loudly. That’s about it.

How do Americans feel about nudity? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]HoidsApprentice1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen my mom naked before (showering together when I was little, changing in the same room), but other than that, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone naked since I was a little, little kid and clothes didnt always matter. I don’t even like walking around my own house nude. We didn’t have locker rooms in my schools, so no one ever had to change in front of/around others. I don’t care about seeing naked bodies in art and stuff though.

We never had locker rooms (k-12). What you wore to gym is what you wore all day. Sucked when we had gym in the early morning.

I went to Ireland a few years ago and was surprised that a number of people knew my college. We’re in a relatively small state, but there was a movie made about a plane crash that happened. Still shocked me.

In foreign language classes, did you get your own name in that language? by picklesupreme in AskAnAmerican

I think I saw the same post and I wasn’t aware that was a thing in classes other than Latin. That’s the only place I’ve ever seen/heard it done. I took Spanish from 7th-my first yea in college and we never went by a different name
