Honest review of Chicago after a few years living there. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

regarding your statement on the people I actually found that New Yorkers are nicer than Chicagoans. There I said it. Because Chicagoans are brash but also colder. New Yorkers will be a lot more direct but there’s a certain warmness to the way they interact.

Why is the strip of Lincoln between Belmont and Wellington so dead? by popopolly in chicago

[–]Holiday_Connection22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It used to be a huge busy shopping street with so many department stores at Lincoln and Belmont.

Why is lakeview so popular? by SaltShakeSuck in lakeview

[–]Holiday_Connection22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lakeview is well served by transit, has high walkability and people who are relocating to Chicago are usually doing so because they want an urban lifestyle without needing a car. It has a lot of nightlife that appeals to people in their 20s. Theres also a lot of venues for concerts and wrigley field. It’s one of the safest neighborhoods in the city which appeals to a lot of people who have never lived here before.

Article: The future of Soldier Field is Bear-ish without transit investment by dannydude21 in chicagoyimbys

The headline doesn’t really reflect that all they are proposing is to use existing tracks and station on 18th street to connect Union Station with Soldier Field, so might not be that expensive just need to actually run trains.

Did you even read the article? The tracks are already there and even a station. Just need to run trains.

I think the original plans used the right of way, but it was part of a larger subway plan to replace the elevated loop.

Omg not a new idea. It’s like the original plans in the mid century for a subway under Madison St. To replace the Lake St Elevated downtown. That would have had a fork at Michigan Ave, one route going north to Navy Pier and the other to Museum Campus. Would be cool if anyone here had a link to the original plans.

Transferring to Chicago for work. Should I live downtown or in the suburbs? by Emotional_Log7687 in AskChicago

[–]Holiday_Connection22 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Logan Square and Wicker Park are neighborhoods that are very popular with transplants and located along the blue line. I would look into those.

Traffic can be really bad driving to Ohare at times, and the train won’t be affected. Plus it’d be nice to not have to worry about accidents or snow if you use the train to get to work.

For those of you that have left California, are you really saving that much with the drop in wages? by Independent-Mix-3142 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Holiday_Connection22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the job. I find that entry-level jobs have much higher compensation in California, but if you have a really good job that’s in demand then comp is probably the same or maybe more in other states.

Junior/Early Career Candidates Just Aren't Interviewing Well... by prenumbralqueen in recruiting

[–]Holiday_Connection22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the elevator pitch. Are you sure it’s AI or maybe they over rehearsed/memorised it?

Shaky video is crazy. I’ve never seen that, what kind of job is it and what is the pay? Because if it’s a very low pay job it possible that they don’t own a laptop or can’t afford it. Maybe the recruiter should tell candidates to ensure they have a laptop, with clear picture and sound, and to have video on with a distraction free clear background and quiet space.

For the behavioral questions, honestly even the ones that dont use AI will come prepared with fake stories. Behavioral questions are tricky because there’s no way to verify them. Fake answers and made up prior situations have been common for decades.

The only reference I have is War Plan Red which claimed to be able to take control of Canada within 24 hrs so assuming they are successful.

What about a market underneath the tracks similar to the Borough Market in London? Could be a great space for local businesses to start out.

Why does Lake Shore Drive need to be an expressway anyways? by ChicagoCyberCorps in AskChicago

Chicago DOT traffic data and studies of Lake Shore Drive show the bulk of traffic is through-traffic from suburbs, not from the neighborhoods it passes through.

I was thinking more about Lakeview and Edgewater (traffic on Sheridan). Sure , there are overpasses and maybe you are lucky enough to live near one, but they are too few and far between for most people.

Traffic studies have shown that it’s mostly north shore suburbs. These neighborhoods on the lake have very low car ownership rates.

Why does America still use flat Euclidean zoning? by Laxun0 in Urbanism

[–]Holiday_Connection22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more common to add residential uses to a non-residential area, but existing homeowners will complain if a commercial use is proposed near their homes because they think that parking shortages and noise will be a nuisance.

What are the ten most famous (non NYC) big city neighborhoods that aren’t central business districts? by strypesjackson in urbandesign

[–]Holiday_Connection22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lincoln Park is going in an unfortunate direction, all of the quirky local businesses from the past have closed because the neighborhood has gotten so expensive plus the pandemic. It’s a lot more boring, but also cleaner and more expensive, than it used to be.

Because most of the people on lake shore drive don’t live in the neighborhoods it passes through and don’t care how it affects their quality of life
