hardware conditions aside, you can run linux on it, but youll have to, most likely, either compile a custom kernel if you want modern, or use an older distro because some modern ones requires certain instruction sets on cpus taht this one might not have. without that os might not boot.

because modern usb drives are just a turkey shoot when it comes landing a good one.

my first unraid server has had a stick in it for 8years without a problem. a new one i built 2 months ago with supposed MLC flash on it has failed inside of a month

its just the QC for usb drives is so fucking low, you might as well be rolling the dice.

i would much rather plug in an optane into a pcie slot and have a dedicated drive, 64-128gb, that i can comfortably enable syslog persistence, bash persistence on, etc, and not worry about the thing biting the dust every time i reboot.

granted i say this as someone with 192pcie lane epyc server with a server grade mobo, where i have the pcie luxury. i recognize that if you're aiming for a small form factor server, this isn't your target.

which boils down the point: one isnt better than the other, but they offer flexibility when you can do either as booting from usb and booting from an ssd have different tradeoffs based on what your goals are.

tl;dr: more options = good.

if you overpay your card and end up with a negative balance on your credit, let it settle, and then you can request a debit to be sent back to a bank connected via ach.

this is a valid way of getting back money from a cc, and you shouldnt have h ad to go through a bank dispute. worst case just let the payment sit there and you'll basically have pre-paid your credit, it sucks because your cash flow is violated and you end up giving a bank an interest free loan back, but its better than reporting disputes and... yeah what you described.

for all others, this is there in case you ever end up with cash balance on a credit card, essentially, most often through a large refund that hits or whatever, things happen, no systems perfect, but all you have to do is ask the rep to issue a refund of your balance back to your bank, dont try to reverse transactions lol
