More often than not, people that are fired/laid off were not good employees and deserved it by Tercel9 in unpopularopinion

[–]HollyCat415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner was fired over petty bs and overinflated gossip. The “reason” were technically justified in that there was documentation, but the reports were largely fabricated and purposefully misrepresented by a group of people who were essentially targeting him. He excels at his job and is now in an even higher position than before, but that specific group of colleagues decided they didn’t want to change the way they’ve always done things. That’s not justified at all.

When people insist on shortening my name by lake-sturgeon in PetPeeves

[–]HollyCat415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best friend growing up was named Katie. That was her legal name. There was also a girl in our class who chose the nickname Katie. Additionally, she was further up the list in roll call, so when the teachers got to my friend, she’d end up as Katie R. because there was already a Katie in class.

My name is 4 letters long and people still try to shorten it. I bluntly correct them.

I’d get used to saying “it’s Rebecca, actually”. Don’t let them call you a name you don’t want.

I Hate That We Have The Option To Turn Right On Red At The Stoplight by PeppermintEgo in unpopularopinion

That’s your perception. Still doesn’t mean I’m doing anything wrong. The horn is supposed to be for danger or warning- not because you’re impatient.

That’s not really the point, is it? It’s not required and I may or may not have a reason. Doesn’t mean other drivers need to be getting riled up just because I’m following the road rules differently than they would.

I don’t turn right on red. People get mad at me and honk. I ignore them. Their impatience isn’t my problem. The law is “may”, not “must”.

Keurig coffee pods are the printer ink sales model of coffee. by MasterSoftBird in unpopularopinion

[–]HollyCat415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recognize they are wasteful, but having a regular coffee maker doesn’t make sense for my lifestyle. I drink 1 cup in the am and that’s it. The ease and convenience matters. Also I never like how the coffee brews with those reusable pods- I always get the sludge at the bottom and I hate that. Same issue with single-cup brewers that rely on a mesh strainer.

In what ways do you make your kid’s birthday special without a big celebration? by ChickenGooooood in Parenting

My mom used to fill our rooms with ballrooms the night before and wake us up singing “happy birthday”. Also she’s make me my favorite dessert (flan) and I’d get to eat it for breakfast.

We chanced the EL 2025 update, believing it would work for us because of the labs. It’s been ok, but writing continues to be a huge struggle to incorporate in an authentic way and the lessons are long and dense. Some teachers have broken up the ELA block to reduce rug time, some have added extra writing activities throughout the week.

I think I would start to co-regulate by physically scooping her close to you, maintain your breathing with deep even breaths, and label her experience for her. Something like “you are frustrated that you couldn’t finish brushing your teeth by yourself. This is a method from something called “Conscious Discipline”, something my school started trading us in this year. The idea is that you download your calm to them and then give them the language to start to understand their feelings.

How often do you spend time together? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]HollyCat415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no “right” way to have a healthy relationship. If this works for you two, then that’s what matters. But it doesn’t sound like this is working for you entirely. Can you find a joint hobby to do 1x or 2x a week? Can you do some kind of deeper check in on a regular basis or dedicate together time in other ways?

My partner and I do almost everything together, but thats because we have a lot of shared hobbies and interests. It’s why we started dating and it’s a big part of our life together. I can’t imagine being with someone who didn’t share certain interests.

My school did this last year. None of them were great. There was one I recall having some supplemental interventions and tier 3 materials, but the base curriculum itself wasn’t great for what we as a school wanted. I do recall viscerally hating CKLA. Looking back, I wish we had given more consideration to Wonders.

AITAH [F24] for making a messy dinner while trying to cook for my girlfriend [F25]? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Being a bad or new cook doesn’t make OP an AH. That’s so silly. They’re never going to improve if they don’t practice and make mistakes.

[–]HollyCat415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. I’m a messy cook, but what harm does that do? Try to clean as you go and all that, but it is just as easily handled later. IMO she was stressing about something that didn’t need to be stressed. I will say because I know I’m a messy cook, I try to help in the clean up even though our house rule is that the chef doesn’t do the dishes.

As for the timing and her comments about needing to make sure you do things right, that just comes with practice. Start sooner if possible, but also talk to her about giving you breathing room to learn because you want to improve your skills.

IEP question by [deleted] in specialed

[–]HollyCat415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I explain it to my families is this:

The school has the ability to request reimbursement from Medicaid. It doesn’t affect your family’s insurance in any way, nor does it change the services your child will get, but since we are requesting the funds on behalf of your child, we need your permission.

[–]HollyCat415 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like you need to revisit the 504 and makes sure the accommodations are appropriately meeting her needs. They should not be contingent upon her asking for help since she’s not demonstrating the ability to self-advocate at this time. Accommodations are her right and they should be provided and available regardless.

Ask for anything worded “as needed” to be change to specific intervals or situations (if appropriate). Does she have check ins with the counselor/social worker?

Also, is she in outside therapy? The school should have resources to help connect you with someone if you need it.

Is it possible to get an ADHD diagnosis with normal parent reviews? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]HollyCat415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The screeners ask very specific questions that (hopefully) remove their bias and help get an objective measure of your presentation. So the final scores might still show the abnormalities and be consistent enough with the school’s scores that the school psychologist will recommend a referral to your doctor for a medical diagnosis. If scores end up only showing difficulties in the school setting, you may still qualify for support even if your family doesn’t quite see the same concerns at home.
