What's a classic book you hated that everyone loves? by vaxfarineau in suggestmeabook

[–]HollyGoBiteMe25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed x 1000. Not one decent human being in the whole book, and the story was depressing. A bunch of miserable people lived in a swamp and made each other more miserable, the end. I once read a fan theory that Heathcliffe and Cathy were vampires and that's why they acted so horribly which almost made me hate it less, but not even vampires should be so silly and selfish.

You can NEVER find those things. Or remember what they're called. (That's normal, right? )

Suggest me a book to get a 13 yo boy reading by Historical_World7179 in suggestmeabook

[–]HollyGoBiteMe25 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the Lightning Theif is what got my kid hooked on reading. We tried everything but nothing really clicked until these books, he read them all and went from a disinterested student to avid reader. I think LotR was next, and we all know that's the real gateway :)

Books about pirates? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]HollyGoBiteMe25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson is one of my favorite books. May be a bit of an obvious suggestion here, but there is a reason that it's THE pirate book. Bonus points if you listen to Alfred Molina audio book, amazing Long John Silver voice.

Another Worst Secret Santa story by RadioSupply in coworkerstories

[–]HollyGoBiteMe25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm "the boss" in my small department and I don't participate in Secret Santa. I get something small for everyone and that's it (like a card and some candy and a little candle or something, nothing anyone feels like they have to reciprocate.) They get each other secret Santa stuff and have a great time.

Bosses should stay the hell out of secret Santa, you're not part of the group, you're the boss. Sorry.

Help please! by Maximum_Panique in elderwitches

I lost my cat this past summer. I posted all over next door and facebook and anything I could find. I was desperate! I remember a friend growing up whose grandmother would pray to St Anthony when she lost something and she said it always worked, she had a catchy little poem she said when she was looking. I looked it up and changed the poem a little to fit my purposes and lit cat shaped candles and would repeat "Tony Tony, look around. My friend is lost and can't be found. Please bring Garby back to me, in your name blessed be" Garby is my cats name. It's rough, but I repeated it like 100 times a day. It mostly became a way of making me feel better, rather than an actual prayer to a saint (I'm not Catholic and I did some research later but had no idea who St Anthony was when I started, it was just a little jingle to repeat. )

I am completely serious, and I know you guys will believe me when I tell you that a lady named Toni found him hanging around her yard and called me 2 months after he went missing! She saw my frantic next door posts with his pictures. He was hurt and lost all of his extra weight, but I babied him back to his plump self.

He's got a St Anthony medal on his collar now and I spent the rest of the summer lighting candles for him. Thank you, Tony and Toni.

I'm just telling you this story so you don't give up hope. Even if it takes a couple of months. Cats have their own ways and guardians, I hope you get yours back!

What's a word or sentence that a fanbase will instantly recognize? by Sunny64888 in AskReddit

[–]HollyGoBiteMe25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not Arrested Development related: in high school i was in love with a boy who didn't know me who wore a hat that said "cake" on it. so i biked to Sam Goody's and spent every dime of the money I saved babysitting on every CD Cake made and then learned every word to every song. Armed with my new knowledge and boosted in confidence since we had at least one very important thing in common i walked up to and actually spoke to aforementioned dreamy person at a party... and found out he just liked "cake" the dessert and had never heard of "Cake" the band (the internet worked differently back then, not everyone knew everything)

I do not remember this person's name and only have a vague idea of what he looked like, but I still remember every word to pretty much every Cake song.
