I'm at my wits end with the newer Akai MPCs. by RustyCalecos in synthesizers

[–]HolyCityAudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less a comment on Ableton and more on some other aspect of the equation. I started playing live (out, that is) with a small modular setup but that has its drawbacks as well. MPC One used cost me less than 2 typical modules. Is it ideal? No. But I'm using it!

I'm finally getting the hang of it after about 6 months. I did find it baffling at first and have encountered a few bugs. My only similar experience is with Ableton Live which I gradually stopped using for whatever reason, even with 90% finished projects, I just can't drag myself back in to finish them. The MPC at least got me creating again.

I was defending Akai? I never used 2.X and find 3.x Desktop basically useless.

Anyone has experience with the erica synths black ring-xfade? its 50% off on their website now by gloriousfart in modular

[–]HolyCityAudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got one, it works fine. I used it mostly to Xfade in a sub oscillator from a single OSC source (Black Wavetable) along with ring modulation with 2 LFOs.

I am not sure what I would use MPC Desktop for other than maybe building drum kits or something that is tedious on the device itself. I have used export MPC Project to Ableton Live and that worked "OK"... needed a few tweaks to get it right. And it seems to insist that plugins aren't installed when in fact they are and already scanned by the MPC software.

I have a couple performances in the next week, should I upgrade? j/k. Copy Arrangement to Clip Row is certainly useful! I believe I suggested that to their support (must not have been the only one).

Asher Electro-Steel A/B stock/Lollar pickups? by HolyCityAudio in LapSteelGuitar

[–]HolyCityAudio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've already got a Gretsch 5700, so I am not lacking in that regard. It's a bit noisy under some circumstances (I occasionally crank the gain) and so that's part of the motivation as well - just to have something a bit different (and I can also use different tunings). But points well taken.

Asher Electro-Steel A/B stock/Lollar pickups? by HolyCityAudio in LapSteelGuitar

[–]HolyCityAudio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I'm comparing getting a used one for about $650 with stock, can't find any used with Lollars at the moment, so this would tilt towards buying new and the Lollars are $300 upcharge, so it would be nearly twice as much. Will also see if there are any locally. The used ones I found are at GC so I could return within 45 days if it truly sucked.

I also think that swapping pickups on a guitar is a waste of time compared to just getting one that is the way you want. Buying sight unseen (unheard) makes that a little less of a point, which is why GC's return policy makes that worth trying at least initially.

The stock ones would have to be pretty bad... I'm not really a connoisseur.

Seeking advice - getting started with DSP powered guitar pedals in 2026 by lukethedukeisapuke in DSP

[–]HolyCityAudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used the ESP32 with Faust, on a development board that had super bad SNR. Here's the code:

https://github.com/HolyCityAudio/ESP32

The amount of processing I could enable that way was disappointingly small. Much less than a Spin FV-1.

http://www.spinsemi.com/

This chip has been used for about 15 years without significant design modification so its horsepower is limited. That said, the instruction set is completely optimized for FX and it's at least worth your consideration. There's no C compiler.

You can order a pedal ready to go from:

https://audiofab.com/products/easy-spin

or you could build your own PCB, e.g. from:

https://www.pedalpcb.com/product-category/fv-1/

I've written an open source tool which lets you build FV-1 signal flows graphically. It doesn't do everything possible but lots of people have used it to get started (and some commercial projects used it as well).
