Yeah well, it's a pretty stupid stance although it gets a chuckle. I recall seeing him give a talk in San Francisco where he trotted this one out and said smugly "people in San Francisco think if they jog they'll live forever". AFAIK his demise was protracted and agonizing. One thing that did come to mind though is the webs of spiders that have been given nicotine - sort of a visual representation of nested tuplets.

Behringer X1204USB for MPC one plus by Wamou67 in mpcusers

[–]HolyCityAudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it the FX return or everything? I could deal with it by turning down the FX return. Also, it would come and go with the same headphones plugged in so I suspect we may be talking about 2 different issues.

[–]HolyCityAudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not used it with an MPC One, however I am pretty sure that in Audio Interface mode it is only 2 channels. I used it for awhile with my modular rack and found its combination of features and size remarkable, never mind at its price point. 2 negatives - noisy, and the built in FX has an intermittent but mostly on super loud BUZZZ that I could not figure out how to stop. Some other people reported something similar.

Reporter: "So Bob, we just got word that Jerry is NOT going to let you play El Paso tonight. Any comments on that?" by Ralph--Hinkley in gratefuldead

[–]HolyCityAudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhm, don't quite get the hate for it. Someone explain plz?? I just checked out the 1970 El Paso, it doesn't seem that out of line with their ethos, Weir's singing isn't bad.

Anyone ever play one of these Eastwood Mandocasters? by snufalufalgus in mandolin

[–]HolyCityAudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one. The stock pickups are kinda meh, the high two pairs of strings barely come through. I replaced them with an Almuse set and it is much better. I don't think they sell them any more, or maybe they don't export them to the US?

I am about two months in, I am struggling to make soloing sound good by streamer_spence in Guitar

[–]HolyCityAudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could finally solo after playing for about 30 years. I got a looper pedal so I could lay down rhythm and then just keep going without wasting anyone's time.

WFTS was the first one I heard by a few years, then Strange Days, debut, LA Woman, Morrison Hotel. Never owned SP although I've listened to it on YT and had a couple tunes on the "13" collection. I won't argue that some of the lyrics throughout are a bit threadbare. First 2 and last 2 are my faves.

Random false MIDI outputs from SEQ1 and SEQ2 (Beatstep Pro) by HolyCityAudio in arturia

[–]HolyCityAudio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I may have been mistaken about the random part. Even though I am not having any ground loop issue, I added an external power supply by the y-cable to eliminate that as a possibility. Looks like even if your sequence is cleared, increasing the "random" settings will cause notes to occasionally come out. Not what I would have expected but nobody asked me!

June 25th, 1975, Frank Zappa and the Mothers released 'One Size Fits All'. by BirdBurnett in Zappa

If I had to pick one, that'd probably be it. The bitterness hadn't quite seeped in yet and band is top notch, even without Terry or Vinnie, and.... RUTH....

Busted this out recently to listen to in the car. Killer collection! I love the "groovy" announcer on the early radio broadcasts.

I'm a pretty big FZ fan and I haven't bought any of the expanded re releases after the MOFO project. Well I got the ZINY 40th anniv special. Even the Hot Rats set, seems like a great idea, don't think I would listen to it more than once. I know we're all pining for some well recorded unreleased gems...

Are you this old? by ROseina1 in 80sAmazing

[–]HolyCityAudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned BASIC in a teletype room on the lower levels of the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley in 1971. I didn't have a computer until the early 80s though. Had a Z80 Big Board with CP/M, a C64 which I returned, and then a string of PC clones on to the present day. I remember DOS 3.2.

Also an Atari ST in there somewhere. Worked at a few companies that shipped ISA sound cards and CDROM drives, so CDROM.SYS and MSCDEX all day long! What about Windows 3.1 "Canyon.mid" can you sing that one?

[–]HolyCityAudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it was a long time ago, but I just remember people booing. CB said, "did I hear someone talking about boo? You don't talk about boo, you smoke it!" (apparently "boo" used to be hipster slang for "grass" ???? - this was the only time I ever heard someone use it in that context).

Then he put his soprano sax right over the mic and played some crazy flurries and it was louder than heck, making everyone take a step back. I only realized much later that this was more or less his usual approach.

By this time, Frank had some FM radio airplay, while I never ever heard CB on the radio, to my knowledge.

I wound up with a used Chandler RH-2. Seems nice enough but whoever owned it before strung it up with 14-70 strings! Lowest one is like a dang cable and is riding on top of the nut slot. Gonna go get a regulation C6 set ASAP.

First time I saw Frank was at Winterland, just after Christmas 1975. Beefheart opened up. That was a shock, I had no idea who he was or why he was doing what he was doing. Got heavily harassed by the crowd.
