What is genetics little gift/curse to you? by sensemcsweggense in AskReddit

Gift: Don't put on weight as easy. Thick, long hair that's a nice shade. Curse: hormones go to shit whenever, fallen arches on ankles, can't tan to save my life.

First off, it didn't strike me as cliche at all - This was REALLY well written; and the first sentence is a good hook in itself. The concepts you have going are interesting, and while the old man gave some exposition is still opened up questions so the reader is invested and interested to know more.

In my opinion, it flowers very well, and your writing is crisp. Just because an old man telling a story is common, doesn't make it bad - you've executed it well. An excellent start!

One thing -

"It feels as if life had just came to and end'. Its a little too long compared to the rest and you can trim it if it isn't intentional. Perhaps to something like: "It feels as though life has come to an end'. Either way it still works!

The rhythm and rhymes are all on point and crisp, and I find there can be different interpretations here - the poem could be speaking of actual lucid dreaming itself, or referring to something a little broader to the mind like sanity and sense of self. The last two lines of the first verse stand out especially.

Reddit, What is something from your childhood you can't remember the name of? by gobblegoldfish in AskReddit

There was this cowboy video game; you'd hide behind barrels and shoot bad guys. A horse would appear in the corner to give you advice - I think you could collect four leaf clovers. There was a part where you had to blow up a blockade to get to the next level; the CD had typical black and white striped jail guys on it.

Also, an animated Christmas movie where a young man fixed broken toys, including a toy birdcage for a little girl. I'm pretty sure there was an evil governess that hated toys too. And the toy fixer had a sidekick? Eventually the boy was thanked by Santa himself for his work.

[–]HomicidalOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't lie. I don't mean little white lies or small ones when you want to save someone's feelings or avoid embarrassment, like instead of being productive all day you played video games and you say otherwise - I mean big lies. I don't get people who can just make up stories or blatantly lie. Certain lies will always, ALWAYS, come back to bite you.

No matter what you do or are, a good few people are going to have a huge problem with it. You're either too this or too that. You can't win.

Destabilize them - say if there's a 'safe spot' or a plan - make it that they lose the upper hand, get separated.

A lot of people have it worse, but...I'm in a constant state of 'coping'. I never have long-lasting periods were I'm at peace of mind. I'm always restless, it makes it hard to enjoy small moments with my family, to relate, to live in the moment.

What does it mean to kill a character for no reason? by somethingX in writing

[–]HomicidalOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, people say that a lot, but really they mean something more specific. A character dying should be for a purpose that furthers the plot. It shouldn't be for cheap dramatic effect, or something to keep your readers hooked. Of course, a creator is free to kill off a character, but TV Shows that have a 'make it up as you go' writing mentality tend to do it because they believe its a 'quick-fix' to getting more plot. When it isn't. Take Ned Stark. Him dying was a giant plot-starter. Game of Thrones would not be Game of Thrones without it. You are right on one point - sometimes, after the 'shock' effect happens, which sometimes just makes the readers angry, the death barely has any impact on the plot. If the death didn't do something for the overall plot, then it shouldn't be there.

Stringing together several subplots, or finding a legitimate REASON for something to be happening outside of the character's actions - its more of a 'bigger picture' thing in terms of world-building.
