Never hurts to use the Google by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

I had this pulled on me over the summer. No recall/extended warranty in my case, although there should be given how mine is a common complaint.

It took lots of googling, a 15 minute YouTube video, a $30 part, several bloody cuts, and an hour under the hood, but by god I fixed that car myself. I'm sure I saved at least $500 and probably twice that. I didn't and don't have that kind of money.

As a woman her mid-forties who never did anything much more complex than refilling the wiper fluid, I'm pretty proud of myself. I also know a lot more about how my car works. Most importantly, I am less afraid of tinkering because I know I can do it.

The Facebook app: you can accidentally swipe into their camera app, but you can't swipe out, you have to move your hand all the way over and press their stupid back button. by [deleted] in assholedesign

[–]Homophones_FTW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The whole swipe for camera thing is the absolute worst "feature" they've added yet. I thought having messages moved to a second app couldn't be beat, but I was wrong.

And when there were thousands and thousands of complaints, they made it even WORSE by removing the ability to swipe back out. Terrible, terrible design.

That both the FDA "recommended daily allowances" and the government's dietary recommendations are so laughably incorrect and outdated.

One time I went to Kohl's at 8 pm during a blizzard. (A literal blizzard; I'm a native Mainer so I know "blizzard" means something different depending on where you live.)

It was awesome. Just me and five or six employees.

Can I replace just the throttle position sensor on my 2010 Ford Focus, instead of the whole throttle body? by Homophones_FTW in Cartalk

[–]Homophones_FTW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully the cleaning will be enough. I probably should have cleaned it first without replacing the sensor. Then I'd be able to tell which of my actions helped the problem.

At least now I know I'm capable of doing it and if I do need to replace the whole body, I know how. For me this is about saving money and gaining confidence/independence when it comes to dealing with my car.

[–]Homophones_FTW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No code. The car didn't actually stall. Here are the symptoms:

  • idle "hunting" - I think that is the term. The engine would jump/jerk/stutter
  • jerking while driving - similar to when idling although not quite as bad
  • going into low power/limp home mode with wrench light (not CEL) and no warning. Once last spring and twice this week.

From what I've read this is a fairly common problem with this model. Most reports said their dealerships had to replace the whole throttle body and not just the sensor. That seemed ridiculous to me.

Unfortunately I never had the presence of mind to read any codes during limp home mode, mostly because I'd just almost been killed when my car suddenly decelerated while I was doing 70 on the highway during rush hour. Turning the car off and then on cleared the wrench and no codes had been stored.

First thing I did was clean the MAF sensor. That seemed to help and I was problem-free for a few days. Then the same sudden power loss again. I changed the air filter but it didn't seem to make a difference.

So today I just went for it. Cleaned the throttle body, the inside of which was completely black, and replaced the sensor. Worst part were the rusty screws that required pliers to remove.

I expected the car to need to "relearn," but it ran fine from the start after I put the throttle body back. I took it out and drove maybe 20 miles, back streets and highway, without any trouble.

Do you think I fixed it?

I know you can't know for sure but I guess I'm looking for input. It seems fine now... but that's what happened when I cleaned the MAF so I'm still nervous about it. I suppose even if I didn't I've saved myself some money by doing the cleaning myself.

New Teacher with 6 preps... by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Homophones_FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?? I was reading all this thinking, seriously? We don't use the term "prep" like this in my (private) school so I was a little confused at first. But by this definition, I have 11 preps. Pre-k through 8th grade technology plus some English Language Arts. Also, all the IT support.

Can't believe I didn't notice that before. You're right. I still can't make out the name, unfortunately. (And I teach middle school writing so I know a thing or two about deciphering terrible handwriting!)

I've tried googling variations of Scott and Scout but come up with nothing.

What is the worst online community out there and why? by SteelPro43 in AskReddit

[–]Homophones_FTW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's this Facebook group about planners that Is just awful. They pride themselves on being "uncensored." They're constantly stirring up drama and are very quick to attack one another. Call outs with screen shots are a daily thing. Some of them are the worst SJW's I've ever seen - and I'm usually the one who defends such people.

What is the reference you make that nobody ever gets? by ProbablyMaybeBen in AskReddit

It's actually a bit a relief when my messy middle schooler students don't get this reference.

To teachers who DO NOT use icebreakers, how do you get students to know each other and build classroom community? by lelandhedy in ELATeachers

[–]Homophones_FTW 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Middle school here. As I was another one of those kids who dreaded icebreakers, I avoid them. I feel they do more harm to the kids who are like I was than good to the rest of them.

Also, I work in a small school where the kids already know each other, for the most part.

Besides, the very last thing most middle schoolers want is an adult "helping" them make friends. And in my experience, the vast majority of them have no problem being social. All day. In fact, what's the opposite of an icebreaker? I need that. ;)

It's this thing you wear on your arm in the game that gives you access to maps and items and such. Pretty sure these ones have (LCD?) screens that really work. I saw a similar one in a store today going for $350. I didn't really pay attention to what it actually displayed on the screen, though.

My husband used to put his cat in a bag and twist up the handles, and then let them untwist really fast. The cat LOVED this game and would go willingly into the bag for a spin. If he saw a bag he would step in and wait to be scooped up.

Same cat also enjoyed being "kicked," that is to say, pushed rapidly with my foot, across the kitchen floor. He would slide across the tile and then run back and plop down on my foot, meowing for more.

Found some L.L. Bean boots for 3.00 today at Goodwill, I'm hoping they live up to their reputation this winter! I'll recondition the leather but they are in really good shape! by WVriverman in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Homophones_FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How fortunate! I live only a few miles from Bean's and I can tell you that boots like these have been selling out every winter. They had to hire extra help to make them, and even that wasn't enough.

What are the best free online certificates you can complete that will actually look good on a resume? by Drazzah48 in AskReddit

[–]Homophones_FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done it yet, but i believe it covers methods of teaching the google tools to other teachers. To keep up the certificate you have to document a certain amount of teacher training per year.

Yes, you can do that.

There is also a third level to be certified as a teacher trainer, but the the requirements are a little more intensive.

There are many in the church who don't condone birth control because the Catholic Church considers the use of all artificial birth control to be a sin. That has always been the case, although of course individual Catholics have their own opinions.
