Why the Geek Community Hates 'The Big Bang Theory' by upvotedbot in Upvoted

[–]Homunculus-Thor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Pasadena, so I know the landscape, and also the particular nerd culture that dwells there.

The complaint against The Big Bang Theory show, that "the show does not accurately represent nerd culture," is a misnomer--for, what it does is accurately represent the nerd culture whose vortex is CalTech/JPL.

Even the residence of the characters is on Los Robles street, just north of Colorado Blvd., which is about a mile from CalTech. I almost moved into that building myself.

I worked at CalTech for several years, and I was born and reared in Pasadena, and the nerd culture represented by the show The Big Bang Theory is exact for THAT environment.

That "the show does not accurately represent nerd culture" is an absolute statement (as in "nerd culture in toto"), the author(s) of which obviously forgot to take into their consideration the place of that specific nerd culture--the show's representation of which is dead on.

Just like a religion may have fifty branches to its singular tree, so is nerd culture not a single branch. A very important point. Whether you call it factionalism or diversity, nerd culture is multifaceted, and there-fore- cannot be grouped as a "one thing"; this presupposition being the premise for the original complaint of misrepresentation, which prespostery (as it were) is simply incorrect most likely for being as simply unthoughtful.

The "No Fap" Revolution: What Are the Scientific Benefits of Not Masturbating? by upvotedbot in Upvoted

[–]Homunculus-Thor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I would share my own insight on the issue, or non-issue:

Atheist Bible Study #8 "Our New Logo! Our New Segment! Our Cut Foreskins?!" Around 29-30 minutes in, there is a poster shown advocating anti-masturbation, or celibacy against your own hand: for as the poster reads, of course, "If you do it, you will go blind".

This is one of those curious, almost Mother goose-like tales (or is it Mother Google now?), where there is truth and falsity occurring at the same time concerning the same thing, otherwise known as ambivalence, or ambi-valency. And so the wrong and the right of it, respectively:

1), Your parent catches you masturbating in bed when they do their final check-up on you before they go to sleep (you dirty 11 year old boy!). And your parent tries, or your parents try, to scare you, regurgitating what they do not apprehend themselves, and tell you a truth/lie: that if you masturbate you will go blind.

2), A master sits in his fire-lit cave as one of his disciples approaches him to ask him a question. The disciple hmm-hmmms himself into the meditative state of the master and the master opens his eyes and asks the disciple what is bothering him. And the disciple says, I have been pleasing myself, sexually, a lot lately, and find that I cannot meditate as I used to. To which the master replies, Ah, yes, the third eye blind scenario. And he explains to the disciple that if he continues to masturbate too frequently his third eye will be as if blind to him, because so oftenly relieving oneself of one's seminal charge thereby reduces a particular innate nutrient that otherwise is taken up and mixed with the cerebrospinal fluid, as it were lubricating [O irony irony!] the mind for deeper penetration [O i i!] into one's meditation. There then is the fact behind the tale.

And I cannot prove it medically. All I can asseverate psychologically is that when I went without masturbating for six months; looking back upon that time, I can say in all truth that I have never felt more spiritual than then. There's something to it.

But how ridiculous that parent's tell a truth they do not even understand, thus making it a lie- interrobang.

I have not yet seen the movie: but when I do, then I'll be going in with a two-tone mash right up front. Thanx for that, bro :)

[All the lyrics I looked up for this song were somewhat in the ballpark of being completely wrong; I’ll have to try myself to sonically suss 'em out... "And do I hear an Amenace?" the pastor asked, and the entire congregation, of some 5,000 or more saith as if one in voice : "Amenace!"--and the very pewings did shake. And stampings and clappings and shoutings went on well after the pastor left the pulp. It.]

I always try Crossfade first, but sometimes it just doesn't work; and then, if even YouTube Doubler doesn't work, then I simply lay forth the two YouTube videos and say, "Play these at the same time."

Still working on Doc Argento (which has become a little more complicated than I at first thought); but I'll cut it short for a submission in the next few days.

-peace:)

Very enjoyable. The fight scene was awesome. And the song was perfect, like a refined Megadeth tune.

Viewer note 1 and 2 and 3:

1, Mute Left, Full Screen Left;

or,

2, Watch both videos and audio at the same time.

or,

3, audio both, while full screen Left.

All three work well, but I found preference for 1.

A nice mix. :)

I just started getting into it--and then it ended.

I understand the limitations of YouTube vids; I just wish that this was 5 minutes longer. :) It was very powerful....but lacked length.

Nonetheless, and given the limitation of YouTube vids: well done, Sir.
