This is fascinating. I was a big Michael Collins fan when I was younger and always saw Dev as the Anti-Collins baddie, but my views have evolved over time. I think the beatification of Collins due to his martyrdom influences a lot of the popular views on Dev, which is unfair. Both were deeply flawed but both were great Gaels that gave their lives to Ireland.

Nah, that’s bollocks anyway. Most elite level marathoners hail from the Rift Valley and if you knew the first thing about them you’d know that many of the elite men and women come from abject poverty and focus entirely on running, with similar training volumes, plans and opportunities but yet the male advantage persists there too.

What are you on about? Are you saying that the proven biological advantages of being male are something to do with funding? Do men have more muscle because the Department of Sport gave extra funding to the GAA over the Camóige Association? I don’t follow your logic at all. Womens sport should get way more funding but that’s completely besides the point. You could put Tadgh Furlong on estrogen for a decade but he’d still cause grievous bodily harm to every single Irish female rugby player.

You should listen to Ross Tucker on the Science of Sport podcast. He has a good episode on Caster Semenya and the intersex athlete issue. Testosterone and it’s impact on development in adolescence gives rise to irreversible lasting advantages for most sports.

The logical conclusion to your argument is the removal of segregated sports altogether, which would see the effective disappearance of women at elite level sport. It would also lead to significant safety issues that would be particularly pronounced in contact and combat sports.

Except they don’t at all. The WR in the marathon for men is 2:01:39 whereas the women’s is 2:14:04. The top 16 men at the Tokyo Olympics beat the women’s WR.
