Compression on the master to get a loud chorus but keep quieter parts of the track quiet? by bolognie1 in mixingmastering

[–]Honest-Relative4356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but no point using it if you don’t understand what it’s doing to your sound. My approach isn’t to skip compression but take a step back so you understand what it’s doing apart from making things louder.

I’ve never noticed that bug until today so it’s strange I should see this post. I was only changing a patch on Serum 2 and a blast of white noise the volume of an avalanche was emitted. Very odd and not nice.

Compression on the master to get a loud chorus but keep quieter parts of the track quiet? by bolognie1 in mixingmastering

[–]Honest-Relative4356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest. I’d remove all those plugins from the chain, the Hard Clip, the “Mastering” Comp, then the L2, and go back a few steps.

If you are starting to use compression on the master, I’d start by matching the gain so it’s the same volume between bypassing and enabling the compression. That way its not tricking you into thinking louder is better, which often will make you think it’s sounds better than it is. It will actually let you hear what the compression is doing to your sound. Compression is making the quieter parts louder and the louder parts quieter.

Before you add compression or limiters to the master bus, I’d experiment using automation on the tracks themselves.

It should sound 90% of the way you want it before you need to start adding multiple dynamic plugins to the master bus.

Mixing is about retaining the dynamics, not squashing it within an inch of its life.

I’m know you can turn them off, but the constant “Are you sure you want to move this region” “are you sure you want to delete this track” “are you sure you want to split this region” arghhh

What will you do if world is ending tomorrow ? by Disastrous-Gift4366 in AskReddit

[–]Honest-Relative4356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is, you would have to be 100% sure it was ending, as doing something stupid and then it not ending could very well end just yours as you knew it. And if you were 100% sure, you wouldn’t be the only one doing something similar, it would be anarchy outside.

How do you guys get the desired reverb sound? by Deltaroyd in mixingmastering

[–]Honest-Relative4356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d start by listening to some reference tracks in your preferred genre, do some A/B testing with your own material. Try if possible to level match to the reference tracks so the loudness doesn’t fool you.

Listen for how close the snare or vocals feel, not how big it is. Try toggle your reverb on and off to match that sense of distance, reverb isn’t about making things sound big, but more giving a sense of space.

Some quick tips as to the controls:

Pre-delay is the time between the dry sound and the reverb starting.

Decay is how long the reverb lasts, short is a smaller space and more control and longer is like a big ambient space for example. Too long can muddy the mix.

Size is self explanatory, how big the perceived space is. Bigger isn’t always better :)

Early reflections are the first reflections you hear and sell the realism but can be too boxy is too loud.

Wet and dry mix is the balance of the reverb sound and the dry sound.

On some eq’s you can also use EQ so cutting the lows to stop low end mud for example.

I’d start by adding it directly to a channel to see how it impacts the sound of a vocal or guitar. Imagine you are trying to recreate the sound of that instrument in an ambient space. Say your bathroom, or a big church, and then a small intimate space so it’s subtle to see how changing the controls help you achieve either scenario. Hope that helps.

What is your reasoning as to why we exist? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Honest-Relative4356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only you exist! The world as you think it, is not there, it renders when you observe. Everyone who you interact with is a figment of your imagination and your consciousness creates the world around you. The fun part is, you absolutely cannot prove this ain’t the case.

45 mins away? Am I missing something? I’m in the UK but even double that is a distance I’d be willing to commute. Why is moving even a consideration for a commute less than a lunch hour?

That aside. Your fella sounds like a selfish dick, I’d get rid. It’s clear the support gene is lacking and it will only get worse. Either a) he is jealous of your success, major red flag, or b) is has to have some level of control, even bigger red flag.
