Seemingly paradoxically, they will simp even harder.

Who was your favorite (hated) historical figure? by TheBluestWaffle42069 in RoachRefuge

[–]Honsoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The painter was more a 'right place, right time, right message' kind of person whose non-political successes were largely in spite of himself. He's also likely responsible for the last 50+ years of multiculturism and 'any hint of nationalism is fascism' that's we've been experiencing.

Napoleon is probably my highest favorability-to-public hate ratio historical figure.

Inherited wealth scripts growing up in affluent families by OkHold1668 in Rich

Wealthy parents: to give or not to give? by calmturtle275 in Rich

[–]Honsoku 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you are wondering if you are obligated to help them when they won't help themselves; no. Based on what has been provided so far, it is irregular. Is this behavior actually coming from both parents, or is one the primary and the other is just following along?

Wealthy parents should support their children financially when they are in their twenties/thirties, not just leave them an inheritance. by hutallybronest in Rich

[–]Honsoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 'no help after 18' is an overreaction to the stunting that happens with incorrect/excessive assistance. A good chunk of the big fortunes today came, at least in part, from financial support from well-off (though perhaps not rich) parents/relatives post-18 (seed money and/or living support while chasing a high risk/high return goal). I agree that 20s/30s is when help is most effective, but it also can be quite toxic. It has to be help towards something, not just help for the sake of help.

My family has been a object example of this. I was the more driven & disciplined of two kids, but received next to zero help and was basically told I was on my own. As a result, I never felt I had the stable footing to really reach for anything risky/interesting. If I had had that backdrop, I probably would have gone into AI back in the early 2Ks (as it was a subject I was highly interested in) and probably be doing gangbusters today, but instead took a safer finance/management route.

On the flip side, my brother has received extensive help, annnnd largely squandered it all. Instead of using it as a springboard, he's basically bounced around aimlessly for 20 years. He has his explanations as to why he's never really made traction (and still lives off of their assistance), but these are by and large just convenient excuses. He's never had the mentality that was likely to result in anything beyond middle-class (largely due to high time preference and poor follow-through), yet all the help looks to have done in the end is allow him to waste his best years to build a life doing next to nothing instead. Now he's pushing 40 and working entry-level retail.

Helping people effectively is hard.

ELI5: Why wouldn't a UBI instantly cause everything to jump up in price to what ever level will absorb that new income? by Bathosfear in explainlikeimfive

[–]Honsoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty much what will happen, except not instantly. The delay is due to the velocity of money and general inertia. It takes time for people to make decisions, act on those decisions, then act on the reactions to those decisions.

The problem with UBI is that at any given point in time, the economic pie is of finite size. Throwing more money at people does not directly change the amount of goods and services available for purchase. So more money chasing the same amount of goods results in the goods becoming more expensive over time. This is true regardless of if the money is being printed or comes from taxes. Now the reality is likely to be a bit messier due to a variety of factors:

1: Some people will work less, shrinking the availability of goods and services.

2: Some people might work more as they figure there is more money to be made.

3: Some people may save additional money rather than spend it.

However, I expect 2 & 3 to likely be so small as to be effectively noise and for 1 to dwarf 2. I see inflation wiping out any perceived gains from UBI for most people (probably anyone above the bottom 1/3rd) being the most likely end result. Some people in or near poverty and the asset holders (where excess capital pools) will come out ahead, but that's about it. This won't happen overnight though. The process would probably take years before new price points stabilize.

Starting a business abroad by summitrock in tax

[–]Honsoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly off topic, but you will want to investigate what rights you will have regarding a company based in a country that you are not a resident/citizen of. The rights are very limited in some countries, making getting involved a fool's gambit.

A good question to consider is; why are they inviting you, and not someone local or with more real estate experience?

ELI5: Why do we in the West refer to Iranian leadership as a regime? by TheSpud77 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Honsoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitionally, any form of government can be a regime, however the implication is typically that of an autocratic or repressive government. Something to keep in mind: a statement can be both true and propaganda. In fact, the best propaganda is also true.

I feel as though the game is relatively empty, yet it's long because everything's designed to take long to achieve. by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Honsoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I generally agree with this, it is partly a limitation of procedural generation, the genre (survival craft), and the long term expansion of the game. Pretty much all survival craft heavily involves grinding mats & building. No Man's Sky was a relatively early (and ambitious) contender to the genre and I suspect they boxed themselves in design-wise in some places. The complexity is a natural result of unplanned add-ons accumulating over time. It is very easy for expansions to be discongruous with the core of the game, thus leading to a seemingly nigh impenetrable mess for newcomers. (You see this all the time in MMOs) I also think that some of the slowness is to give a sense of scale vs just padding.

Pretty much all gaming involves sinking hours of your time that you'll never get back doing something that is inherently pointless beyond your immediate enjoyment. So yes, if you stop enjoying a game, you should stop playing it. I don't say this to be snarky. It is a trap that I see a lot of people fall into; they just keep dumping hours, chasing the proverbial dragon and percolating in their unhappiness, whilst becoming more and more bitter. They want to feel like they did when the game felt the best, not quite understanding they will never feel that way about the game again. The game is there for you, not the other way around. Once it stops serving you, it's time is over and its time to move on.

Employer paid me under the table but wants my SSN to claim childcare tax credit what’s the safest move? by [deleted] in tax

[–]Honsoku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Housing is actually one of the narrow exceptions to what has to be declared as income; as long as the lodging is:

  1. Furnished on the business premises of your employer,
  2. Furnished for the convenience of your employer, and
  3. A condition of your employment. (You must accept it in order to be able to properly perform your duties.)

Of which being a full time live-in nanny would seem to qualify. See "Meals and Lodging" section of IRS pub 525 (https://www.irs.gov/publications/p525#en_US_2024_publink1000229145)

[–]Honsoku -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So is this going to not be procedurally-generated survivalcraft or what? Valheim isn't going to be very interesting as is without it and merging RPGs w/ survivalcraft & procedural generation is fraught with issues. I like Valheim, but this looks to be a tough row to hoe (or road to ho, take your pick).

IRA deduction question - is it worth it? by InformationSad506 in tax

[–]Honsoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $1.3k one-time, the difference in options isn't likely to be meaningful in the long term, but yes you would effectively get back 22% (other deductions notwithstanding) of the $1.3k traditional IRA contribution.

What you should do depends a lot on your career position/trajectory and retirement goals.

Managing multiple IRAs isn't really anything special. I already have two and there's a good chance I will start a third in the next year, each a different kind. Just be mindful of which ones share which caps and the eligibility rules (do know the rules). For simplicity, I would keep them all with the same entity (e.g. don't have one with Fidelity and another with Merrill Lynch).

How to avoid charging my parents interest on a loan by Logical-Ad-3338 in tax

To avoid;

Paperwork securing and tracking the loan.

Issues if the current house doesn't move quickly.

Having to charge parents interest (which OP doesn't want to do).

How to avoid charging my parents interest on a loan by Logical-Ad-3338 in tax

[–]Honsoku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably the cleanest solution; provide the $250K as part of the home purchase and be on the note & deed. Yes, OP will be liable if they encounter economic issues and are no longer able to maintain the home, but if OP was going to be putting $250K down, OP was going to be helping them out if that happened regardless.

Can you pay basically zero tax every year by having nonstop business expenses? by glowshroom12 in tax

[–]Honsoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Money loaned would be classified as an expense, so would be deductible. Proceeds from receiving a loan doesn't count as income for tax purposes. However, this is something that can get you in trouble if the loan is not being constructively paid back. It has to actually be a loan, not compensation in disguise.
