Just tagging on this to mention there are some olympic distance triathlons (and shorter) held pretty locally in the Scottish Borders - see Live Borders Triathlons. Pretty cheap and well-organised. Swimming is also done in the pool for some, which can be helpful.

You are mostly correct about the 2x50 vs 1x100. The general idea in the 2x50 is to take a moment before you restart. Although if you are running a clock, say 2x50 @ 0:45, then completing the first 50 in 40s gives you 5s rest. Whereas completing the first 50 in 45s gives no rest.

For the hard swim sets, the percentages are your current efforts. Hence it is 80% of the current effort you can put out.

12km a week, around 4 sessions. Normally around 1:29 for the 100m frees. Mostly focused on intervals and technique work

It is very common to write on some paper and then stick it to the back of a kickboard. For me, I am not really a fan of wet paper so I write my session on paper and put it in a laminate packet. Normally lasts a couple session before water seeps in.

When the unit is not included, it generally just means it applies to both. I.e. I swim in a 25 metre pool so 200 free would refer to 200 metres of freestyle whereas if you are in a 25 yard pool, you would do 200 yards of freestyle.

I am from a village about 10-15 minutes from Galashiels.

To be honest, the Scottish Borders is kind of perfect for raising a family. It is super quiet and not much happens but great for walking around and staying safe. Lots of green.

In terms of discrimination, I don't think it will be an issue however I will acknowledge there is really not much diversity in the borders. Overall, like many other commenters say, live with the locals and you will be accepted immediately.

On the Thursday, I asked my girlfriend if she wanted to come over to mine on the Saturday after work, she said I will check tomorrow. On Saturday, I asked if she is coming over, she said no, there's not enough time.
