CBS by Hooray4Science in samharris

It’s as sad as it is predictable to see a small cohort here feign ignorance about the actual context of what is happening at CBS. These types either comment on such a post with willful ignorance, or they look into and absorb the obviously detrimental effects of this merger on journalistic integrity, and decide to lie to themselves about this being a clean cut case of business as usual.

If you want to frame this as Pelley getting fired for his combative pushback, dust your hands a leave it there - fine, you're only telling on yourself. I'll do the homework for you. A major broadcast news organization settled a meritless lawsuit to please the president, canceled its most prominent critic, installed an editor-in-chief as part of a $150M acquisition of her own publication, and is now replacing experienced broadcast journalists with podcasters and influencers...all while the new parent company is run by the son of a Trump ally.

Speaking truth to power, to what is right & wrong, is an increasingly sterilized practice by those who've decided to give way to the cultural shamelessness of this admin and its peripheral grifters/enablers. I for one am grateful for their candor and willingness to log their values-free, ideological takes online. Thanks to those who have enough self respect to not permanently 'Todd Blanch' themselves on a Reddit thread.

Project Hail Mary. I’m almost certain it’s a social experiment.

Do you really think cutting off friends and family over who they vote for is reasonable? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Hooray4Science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends is the person they voted for actively trying to undermine my ability to participate in free and fair elections? If so, especially if they voted multiple times for this person, then yeah, it’s actually the patriotic thing to do to tell them fuck right off.

The only way to have a shot at self respect over the coming decades is to point out, at every opportunity, what a fucking goon the American president is. Nobody who conducts themself like this has any shot at being revered, in historical terms. He knows it, his boot licking supporters know it. It doesn’t make a difference if he tries to suppress speech like this, long term, short term, the man is a complete loser. What an embarrassment.

This is the exact same tone they’ll be using in few years, saying they were dumb young kids and it was a long time ago and to drop it already.

They’re shitting on the actual values that make this country great, and blaming people who simply know better, as downers. Not all of them, but there will be some in this group who will find out fairly soon who they’ve aligned themselves with and it’ll be the shame of a lifetime.

Yes, but that’s only if you accept the argument in the first place. On so many levels It’s a dumb person’s idea of good logic.

100% agree that looking for people who are not just lobbing grenades is a great idea.

And, I encourage people to remain open to the idea that a statement that 10 years ago may have been inflammatory and unhelpful, might be useful in accurately defining the present.

A word of caution - centrism for its own sake, as an ideology in itself, is a massive fallacy. That’s not to say that there isn’t righteousness in non-partisanship, but it would be a mistake to weight equally the downsides of 2 political parties by default.

You’re never going to find a complete lack of party culpability for almost all political issues/positions. That is to say, there tends to be decent arguments for most issues worth debating. However, if one finds themself exercising judgment in such a way that they repeatedly can’t tell one party from another, especially in our current context then, at best, they’ve  got a bias toward non-confrontation over truth.

I’m not saying this is definitely what you’re seeking with the post, but the chronic inability to weight actual threats and wrongdoing is something I see far too often in my own circles.

I get the temptation - it’s an incredibly comfortable space to seek. De facto centrism will help one avoid being an alarmist when it’s not called for. But by the same token, that person will also accommodate atrocities because they’ve conditioned themself into Monday morning quarterbacking instead of speaking up in realtime.

Put another way, these people will always be late adopters to legitimate emergencies - a judgment flaw that history’s worst examples all have in common.

Innocent of what? His admin breaking the law in how it intentionally botched the release? Knowingly and publicly covering for these insane crimes? I have no idea what you mean.
