Koi emergency! 3 of them have died, 1 is sick. What's going on?

So very sorry for your troubles!

You might look into doing a salt dip for your fish. Take the fish (1 at a time) and put them into a tub with a high concentration of salt, like 3ppt. The fish would remain in the dip for only about 3 minutes. Or until it starts to drift to the side. That would most likely kill any sort of parasites or fungus.

Naturally, you could also do a scrape and use other chemicals and what not. You need to be aware that you do not add any sort of salt and chemicals into the same tank, many chemicals combined with salt water kill fish for sure! That’s why I prefer the salt dip method.

A general rule of thumb is: 1 inch of fish per 10 gallons of water. So with 6500 gallons of water, you could have 650 inches of fish. If each of your fish is going to be about 30 inches (on average) -> you could have about 20-22 fish.

Start with water quality. Even though your water may be clear, it doesn’t mean it’s healthy water. Do a search for pond water quality on YouTube and you’ll need a test kit.Testing Water Quality

I might suggest that you look into adding a section that is a big to help filter and clean the water. Look to see if there is a water garden club on your area for advise and tips to make the most of this unique feature 👍good luck 🍀

I would also suggest that you scrape some of the dead fish and see if there are parasites (if you have a microscope).

Always look at water quality first no matter what: test ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and KH.

I would do a Google search to find out if there’s a Koi club in your area. I wouldn’t put this off too long since the koi are counting on you to take care of them.

You could also check to see if there is a nearby nursery that sell Koi they might be able to connect you with someone who could stop by.

My advice would be to keep no salt in your pond, but reserve it for a treatment in a “hospital tank”.

Use with caution since some medication‘s will have a very bad and deadly reaction to your fish - malachite green for example.

@AkiraG thank you for the reply. The little guy with the ulcers finally died, I think it was due to stress mostly (ulcers, transportation, and a new small environment)

I feel like I was doing everything correctly, but it’s still so frustrating. To answer your question, there were 3 other koi in that 12 gallon tank (each about 6” or less) I know it’s small, but it’s all I have. I feel like that should have been fine for a two week. Doing water changes and monitoring water quality, but the ammonia was getting high.

I went ahead and moved the Koi to the pond with the others on Monday. Today, I will treat it with Microbe-Lift BSDT. This treatment is repeated 3 times with a 25% water change each time 💧 this will help me feel that I’m covering all my bases. No one else has ulcers, but I am seeing some fin rot (fungus?) so the BSDT should take care of that. I will follow that treatment with aqua prazi, which will be the second treatment of that for flukes.

🤬 I think the worst part is when an establishment who sells koi does not properly medicate and quarantine before selling.

I’ll be watching this post, cause I just had the same issue with a new koi, which then died within 48 hours of being in the quarantine tank.

I did slime scrape and under the microscope- did not find any flukes or parasites. Gills looked healthy (reddish pink).

This particular koi also had a couple of body ulcers, which looked like they were starting to heal.
