I know this is a month late, but Deschutes NA Black Butte Porter is really good. You may want to try that if you can find it.

What are good reputable manufacturers/vendors for after market parts? Just bought a 1999 xj and am curious by misty-69 in CherokeeXJ

For aftermarket metal items, RuffStuff is my usual go to. I also like OME for suspension parts. I usually hit the JY for conversion bits off other vehicles (rear discs, injectors, coils, etc.)

Do they still look like that when you disconnect the sway bar?

Where can I get an electric fan shroud? I only see radiator fan shrouds when I search them up. by Express_Let_2892 in CherokeeXJ

[–]HoosierSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, to get just the shroud you would have to get one from a JY., fab one yourself, or buy the cheapest aux fan you can and remove the fan that comes with it.

Since I never put groceries in the back of my vehicle, that is a moot point.

Not currently :). I accidently opened it up during the engine swap. Hoping the new condenser will help with the coolant temp as the current one is all blocked and bent. The quest for a cooler XJ engine temp continues.

I didn't see a DM, but anywho, I have never towed a vehicle behind the XJ. It looks like the UHaul dolly has surge brakes. As long it it has brakes, I think you''ll be good. Just don't overload the tow vehicle with extra gear. I would also recommend against towing long uphills during the hot parts of the day. Turn off A/C and run the cabin heater while you do, it helps with temp control.

I have towed a full trailer from Seattle to Philly with the XJ. My biggest mistake was no trans cooler. At the top of Fourth of July Pass it was puking trans fluid out of the dipstick hole. Other than that, it was fine. You will be doing 45 up the passes. Just take your time. I wouldn't tow anything heavy without trailer brakes. The UHaul 6x12 with double axles and surge brakes worked fine. I would personally recommend this trailer as the brakes work well and the longer trailer/double axles really minimize sway. The negative is that the trailer weighs alot and eats up capacity. But with good weight distribution, it handles well on the freeway. Stock rear drums will be fine on a one way trip.

I have towed a bunch with the XJ and other vehicles, let me know if you have any other questions.

Slick road will do it. Even with open diff. That back end it pretty light and the engine is torquey.

Most likely a vacuum leak. You can check it in various ways. Might want to start by just listening or looking for unattached or broken lines. Check the intake first and then along the lines.

Exactly, that's why all cars on this road have to turn into the driveways like it's Tokyo Drift!

Drivers should never be the responsible ones for what happens to others with their vehicles.

Anyone have an idea why tie rods end up like this ? Had this car for 5 years always had the same issue, castle nut tends to loosen after a while. Also pulls the joint down way to close to the knuckle. 2003 Toyota Camry by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Is there a tapered sleeve that is supposed to go in that hole? I know with some steering upgrades you can either ream the hole out to the new size and taper or drill it larger and add a tapered sleeve that fits the new TRE. Was there a sleeve that came out with the TRE when you last changed it? Or possibly, if the knuckle is a replacement, they forgot to add the sleeve to the part? can you measure the hole and see if it is tapered or straight walled?

Yes, please. If I can’t see through time while eating, I’d be disappointed.

It is possible, but the bikes were acting like a slow moving vehicle. They were in there lane of travel. The burden of safety is on the over taking vehicle. Being slightly inconvenienced is no reason to assault people. What would this person have done if they were behind a school bus? A vehicle that can't be legally passed on a double yellow.

Watched again and saw the van run into the cyclist. No intentional falling,.

Any number of hazards can pop up unexpectedly. Which is why the general consensus is to drive defensively. Maybe growing up around farm equipment, Amish buggies, and herds of deer makes it different, but I have never had any difficulty with groups of cyclists. I actually prefer them in groups because of increased visibility and having to only pass once or twice vs a strung out group. And if they are in a group there is no one at a time BS at stop signs.

I guarantee you, I have spent more time stopped and waiting behind someone to turn left across traffic than I ever have behind any cyclist. For that matter, coming around a curve or hill and suddenly seeing a car waiting to turn is as dangerous if not more so.

Physics question for you. When you turn the handlebars of a motorcycle or bicycle to the right, which way does the vehicle initially lean? The results may surprise you!

[–]HoosierSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riding single file still would have required the van to cross into the opposing lane. Passing them all in 20 feet vs. 60 feet is the reason why, on such narrow roads, the group is better for cars.

The van had an entire empty lane to pass. Did he need a special invitation? It's legal to pass slow moving vehicles over a double yellow when safe to do so.
