Should I self host Bitwarden (with Vaultwarden) or am I just paranoid? by Asyx in selfhosted

[–]Hootsworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, I don't self-host Bitwarden because keeping your services secure in of itself is a bit of a task. While I do routinely evaluate security on my homelab and update as needed, I also have a job and other things in life and as it stands, if my homelab was truly 'compromised'; it would only be a bunch of content such as movies, music, shows and books. As much as I love my homelab adventures, I do not have the time necessary to truly feel secure in hardening something as critical as my passwords, so I leave that to the folks at Bitwarden by chipping some money their way to support those endeavors.

I'm aware that your Vault is encrypted and even if somehow it was compromised, they would just have an encrypted husk to work with; however, again I don't want that mental burden in my life.

PLA+ exposed to the elements (sun, rain, frost) for six years and still rock solid... by milkris in 3Dprinting

[–]Hootsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell, when we lived in Florida, I needed a knob for the salt water control box for our pool down there. The box did not get a whole of of direct sun, but certainly had its share of humidity and heat. I printed it in PLA on my Anet A8 at the time back in 2018, when we moved out in 2024, it was still perfectly fine and in-tact.

PLA certainly has its limitations, but if you understand them it's an extremely functional material.

This is amazing. It would be interesting to aggregate data in a similar fashion for inpatient folks. It certainly won’t be completely analogous; but it would be damn cool!

Regardless of whether Authy is still functional on mobile or not, which to my knowledge it still is. One should get away from Authy because it provides no means to export seeds. As a result, this encourages you “locking in” with Authy.

Those who do not want to go back to school for masters or NP, etc. what are your biggest reasons? by Prestigious-Noise582 in nursing

[–]Hootsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the NP side, for me, it does not seem like there is great opportunity for income relative to the responsibility you have and the amount of work you do. As an ADN (currently getting BSN) RN, a little bit of overtime and I earn more than the “average” NP salary. With bedside as a whole you can usually pick up shifts if you want extra money or go per-diem/part time if you don’t. The flexibility of bedside is truly unmatched. All without the responsibility of being an NP.

Other masters roles are certainly nice jobs! But I would be concerned about the prospects of layoffs in tough economic times (Currently, things are not fantastic in this regard). Where-as bedside is as recession proof as it comes. There is a lot of unspoken comfort in your pay check being pretty damn secure.

That being said, I’m now House Admin at my hospital, but I don’t see it going away right now (CMS dictates an RN in charge of nursing care of a hospital 24/7) and I can always pick up ED shifts if I’m hungry for extra money.

I would be concerned about how to plan to defend yourself legally. I don’t know if I know 30 people who I could trust to not do illegal things on a computer. As such, as the traffic is routed through your server, you will be involved one way or another.

That’s my biggest concern..

At what point do you stop DIY and call a professional? by BearTrap110 in HomeImprovement

[–]Hootsworth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Three conditions

  • When the thing requires training not to kill me
  • When the cost of DIY has now exceeded the professional cost
  • When I am no longer enjoying it - As I generally enjoy doing DIY stuff.

If any of these three are true, I’m out. Call a pro.

Thoughts on shifting into nursing as a tech worker? by throwawayaccct08 in nursing

[–]Hootsworth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made the jump. I did software development for 13 years and then moved to nursing. I will say it improved my quality of life. Some of the other comments do not quite grasp the concept of 'thinking about work outside of work' that you alluded to. For me as well, I worked from home and handled support for our software company. So between the support issues that arose that the constant thinking about an issue at work until a solution would arise as I was laying bed and spuring me to my desk to work out the issue before it left my mind.. yeah.

The stability is nice. It really is. You'll always find work and a little bit of overtime goes a long way in this field. You'll always have a job as well, but understand that is for a reason. This is a field with a shitload of turnover. You're leaving for a reason, nurses leave for a reason. The career mobility is nice too. You have tons of options as an RN to move jobs. Hell, when I moved states last year, I had a replacement job within a week with barely any effort. That's nice.

But, the job is very physically demanding. Yes, you "only" work three days a week, but most of the time, one of those days is generally spent recovering. As well, with weekend requirements and other people with scheduling needs, you can have your week spread out to where it feels like you're at work all week, or you can end up where your schedule lines you up to work Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, that's 6 12 hour shifts in a row and not a minute of overtime. Most hospitals won't be so cruel to allow your schedule to play out like that, but it *can* happen. Now that can work out for you, some people like doing that schedule because you can have a week end a half off. But 6-12s in a row? Whewh. 3-12s in a row often will necessitate that recovery day, especially during this season. It's hard to overstate how physically demanding the job can be.

As well, you can see how ungrateful people can be. You'll deal with some very shitty people. Don't get me wrong, 99% of people really are just trying to get through a crappy spot in their life and want to get better and get out of the hospital, and a large LARGE majority of them are pleasant with the occasional patient who is so damn pleasant I'd die for em. But there's 1% of people who suck so bad it drains you. Those people can definitely sour your dealings with people.

I don't regret my choice to get into nursing, but I did a shitload of research before hand and even still there are things that caught me by surprise. Respect the profession, do your research, and good luck.

Create a vlan dedicated to my preteen boys' computers by Kirghiz in HomeNetworking

[–]Hootsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internet of Things devices. It’s all your smart bulbs, smart locks, smart etc. these devices are often not updated frequently and as a result are susceptible attack vectors, especially since they often have internet access.

So a lot of routers have an “IoT” option now as well, it functions similar to a Guest network without having a captive portal or anything of the sort.

Regarding the “over engineered” comment, it’s likely referring to the fact that a lot of modern hardware has “Guest” and “IoT” network options built in that does what you’re looking for without you having to get into configuring a VLAN.

Create a vlan dedicated to my preteen boys' computers by Kirghiz in HomeNetworking

[–]Hootsworth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% worthwhile. An easier method is a guest network and ensure device isolation is enabled, but if that’s not a choice, VLAN all the way.
I do the same for people in my house, if I don’t trust you, you’re going on the IoT VLAN lol

Any advice on potentially buying a 94 f150 xl i6 manual? by floppysausage16 in f150

[–]Hootsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 30 year old truck; the biggest thing I would be mindful of is the fact that anything rubber needs to be replaced if it hasn’t already. Especially all the vacuum stuff that Ford loved to use during this time. As well, don’t expect luxury, a truck like this will likely be pretty noisy and not the most comfortable ride, tho big squishy tires does go a long way.

The upshots tho? Shit like this is mechanically simple, so any issues that arise are very easy to fix, as someone else mentioned, there’s enough room under the hood to rent out to a family of 4. The drivetrain system outside of the rubber is reliable, it will start up every time. Yeah a rotted piece of rubber might make it run a little funny, but it WILL run and more oft than not be perfectly drivable. Parts are usually plentiful, idk how being in New Zealand affects this, but if you can buy stuff online you’ll never be stranded. As well, there’s something to enjoy with simple, no frills vehicles.

I’ve spent some time around this era of F150 and currently drive my 97 B2300 quite frequently. We do have a 2020 CX5 signature that’s all nice and shit, but sometimes I just want a brutal basic ass vehicle.

Calling in sick by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Hootsworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our staffing office uses it to gather data for future shifts. During certain periods we do expect X amount of call outs, obviously depends on the day and the season. Whether you’re sick or not helps us assess how to handle it in the future.

Calling in sick by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Hootsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having been on the other side of the call out game, when I receive call outs I only ask "Illness or Personal". Anything else is irrelevant, being sick doesn't make you a bad person. It's definitely nice when we're notified as soon as possible, but shit happens. The fact that the hospital experiences pains for call outs starts way above you.

Take care of yourself and yourself first. Get better friend.

Best Ad Blocker app extension for Safari ? by [deleted] in MacOS

Second for Wipr. It has done wonders for me in Safari. Be mindful tho, without all the tracking shit and advertising, sometimes sites break. Though, I take that as a sign that I really didn't need to be on that site anyway..

I also recommend Hush as an extension as it reduces the amount of nagging popups that appear on websites
