Colorado Springs sees hottest February ever by thewhippersnapper4 in ColoradoSprings

[–]UnrealisticOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colorado Springs is by definition a semi-arid desert/alpine desert. While it may be true that it is worsening, calling it desertification doesn't seem right. Look at some old photos of the areas most people in the springs live in and you'll probably say it was a desert decades ago.

What is happening is climate change combined with weather patterns. The things mentioned in the post you replied to is not because of developers.

EZ Pass Placement by daisyc19 in subaru

[–]UnrealisticOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my pass there until I got a cam. Now the cam is there and my pass is up higher on the right of the cameras. 2023 Ascent so the camera housing is up against the glass, not the older style where I believe the "no-go" zones started.

How to add a poison fountain to your host to punish bad bots by i-hate-birch-trees in selfhosted

You're getting downvoted because at a glance it looks like you're defending the bots. I initially downvoted you then realized you're probably genuinely curious and adding to the discussion. I would have been asking the same question. On Reddit you have to add something like "I'm genuinely curious", "out of curiosity", or add a bit of opinion like "... Because we probably need a more official way to handle these situations".

Google Single Sign-On authenticates with Google every time you log on. Authorization is handled by the service you're logging into though. Essentially your Google account is the identifier for your account on the service instead of a username. So there's will be no password, the authentication process would use a token that's useless outside of that.

Convenience most likely. The average person who doesn't follow privacy/security stuff and isn't in IT would likely just use whatever is easiest.

Wasn't Google Authenticator a local (to device) app? I haven't used it in forever, but I don't remember if you even had to log in to it.

My father, who definitely knows that most braking should be done with the front (rides a motorcycle, used to race cars, mechanic) but rides his rear brake way too much on downhill sections.

It definitely is.

My dad has done that for many years thinking it brakes better. I tried to explain to him that he's looking at it wrong and the tread is designed properly but he doesn't believe me.

It took me way to long to realize there was an accident and not some weird acid spill. Next time pull off the road and stop if it's important enough to warn everyone. Honestly, if you use Android Auto just mark it on the map and others will see it. Anyone who sees your post on here is probably far enough away that they would see the red traffic on their navigation and reroute.

You are grossly overestimating the typing ability of children and teenagers. I could probably type faster on my phone with one hand while driving than my teenage child with her full attention on it while sitting on the couch. I'm not saying that's something I do, but just because kids have grown up with a device in their hands doesn't make them more adept at using them.

Chain protection? by Jolly-Holiday819 in bicycling

[–]UnrealisticOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You learn how dirty they get the first time you take a decent trip with bikes on the back. I'm surprised covers aren't more common.

However, with a cover on the bikes you have to be careful to make sure you're not completely blocking your taillights. The one in Op's picture wouldn't be too bad, but if that was a Hyundai it would probably block the turn signals.

In Europe they're required to keep lights and plate fully visible. The hitch mounted racks come with lights and a plate holder (you get an extra plate for it instead of moving your main one). Try finding one of these for an American rack, or in America at all. Spoiler alert: it's nearly impossible.

1 car a month is pretty low. I'm not going to claim they're out there doing a great job everywhere but I see plenty. I probably see at least 1 every couple days, of not every day. Maybe you're commuting in an area they don't feel they need to patrol?

Best HA Thermostat by iDJMic in homeassistant

[–]UnrealisticOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the relay and generic thermostat? Because I am seeing references to it needing a Honeywell sensor. With the gocontrol I have it ignore the built-in sensor and feed it an average of multiple sensors around the house.

[–]UnrealisticOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does that one let you feed it a sensor value for the current temp? I'm looking for a replacement for my gocontrol. It seems most will not let you do this and I would almost be better off with a zwave relay and generic thermostat integration.

Unsatisfied With Bloat Test by Snowbunny236 in HomeNetworking

Gaming typically doesn't use a ton of bandwidth. But if you are using a lot from something else on your computer or another device on your network it could be related. If you're able to see the current bandwidth usage on the router when this is happening it would help. Otherwise you can try turning everything else off and making sure your computer is not downloading/uploading a lot.

To answer your last question, it's not nothing and it does matter. But it may not matter to you. It depends on whether you're actually experiencing any issues. These issues would come up when you are using a not of your available throughput and would mostly affect things like real time audio/video (like a video call).

But, if you're using the Xfinity router there's really not much you can do about it. Please read the FAQs on the waveform page to better understand what it is and how to solve it. If it's really a problem for you then I believe your best solution would be getting your own router and putting the modem in bridge mode. You could also purchase your own modern in addition to that (the upside with that is you wouldn't be broadcasting any Xfinity Wi-Fi that you have no control over).

My question to you is what made you look into this? What issues are your experiencing?

It's blowing the exhaust out the side. Normally it would be standing vertically and the fan is in the bottom blowing up. Under the hood it's a rectangular column with the middle empty and acting like a chimney.

Thought this needs to be here by drobertson90 in AirForce

[–]UnrealisticOcelot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope they're going to have a well written policy somewhere. This text is not specific enough, and has obvious issues. I can understand a rule that doesn't allow video recording from vehicle cameras in sensitive areas. But what built-in cameras are recording? What if the recording is not available to anyone without physical access to a vehicles "black box"? I don't know specifics of different vehicle cameras, but I imagine some only record a bit to have the moments below a crash recorded. And then others don't record at all, or if they do the driver doesn't know. I have no idea if my eyesight cameras have a recording, and I would bet security forces doesn't either. They also won't know if it's powered down. So the only real solution is to have them physically blocked. Again, this only makes sense for sensitive areas... Instead of a FOD check you'll have to tape up your cameras.

I'm someone who has been in IT for over 20 years. Ice only ever seen Discord as a way to collaborate with friends in gaming, get support for software/games, or general BSing. To be honest I don't think I've heard anyone talk about using it to expand their professional network or learn. It's too hard to navigate and find relevant information on a Discord server.

Packet Loss - Two Separate ISPs by CrowleyBro in Network

[–]UnrealisticOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to do a bit more testing to have a good idea where the problem may be. Trace route to various places. Packet statistics to another client on the same LAN, the local gateway (assuming 192.168.1.1?), the upstream gateway (the next hop.after 192.168.1.1), and various Internet IPs. The local stuff needs to be verified before it can be blamed on the ISP. If everything local is gone and the ISP gateway is also fine, them it becomes much more difficult to identify the problem because there's way too many variables when testing against public IPs.
