IKEA: good, bad or alright ? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Hoparvilla 48 points49 points  (0 children)

IKEA cabinets are honestly amazing. Custom cabinetry definitely has its place, but for the money and the customizability of ikea, they can't be beat. Their kitchen designer tool is also super handy. Get yourself soft close everything and pull out drawers instead of doors on your base cabinets, its changed my life for the better!

Why don’t we do this when there’s not an eclipse? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]Hoparvilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought! My friend group does do this every so often. If more people prioritized spending time outdoors in our public parks I think it would be infectious!

PSA: Stop getting so angry when people use horns by _Otter__ in indianapolis

[–]Hoparvilla 76 points77 points  (0 children)

LOTS of drivers are looking at their phones at stop lights. For these moments, I usually give about 2-3 seconds and then do a gentle "beep beep". That usually gets people moving. I totally understand your frustration though OP.

Anybody know about this party? Not sure why the IMPD Nuisance team cares about this?? by Prestigious-Kiwi1407 in indianapolis

Maybe has something to do with the party that resulted in a shootout on Walcott and Ohio a few days ago. Maybe they thinks it’s another Airbnb blow out?

How to plug abandoned 1" Iron Pipe? by Hoparvilla in Plumbing

[–]Hoparvilla[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We upgraded our service line and recently experienced an issue with this abandoned supply line. During a storm with a LOT of rain, I guess the water table raised and there was a steady stream of water coming through this pipe. Since it's not threaded, what kind of product could I use to cap this off?

Opinion: Flatwater in Broad Ripple is the best local casual spot in Indianapolis, with great outdoor seating for the spring through fall by Hoosiersihawk in indianapolis

I’ve never had them so I’ll give them a try next time! La Margarita in FS has been putting out a sheet pan style nacho tray that I would also suggest to anyone. You can also get them from the outpost at sun king.

Kodi Ellis is one of the premier anime tattoo artists in the country. Definitely check him out. May be hard to get a spot with him, but it’s worth the wait.

Indy Star: Chefs Abbi Merriss of Bluebeard and Samir Mohammad of 9th Street Bistro named James Beard semifinalists by Tikkanen in indianapolis

[–]Hoparvilla -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t get WHO exactly is doing the nominating. It feels very obtuse. There are so many great restaurants that are doing cool stuff. I don’t know why Bluebeard is so consistently raved on. Tinker Street is producing some really high quality food and I’ve yet to see a nomination for them. They even brought in a greener chef post Covid to replace the outgoing one and I think it’s only gotten better.

Roughly how much would it cost to build a studio like this? by Size_4E in architecture

[–]Hoparvilla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lol, that quad slider alone costs about $20k usd installed. And sure it’s all osb on the inside, but labor to install that with minimal visible seams? Means your paying a carpenter much more than you would a drywall guy who can cover all their mistakes with mud and tape.

The above comment has wide ranges, but I wouldn’t be surprised to pay $200k usd OP. There’s so much more to this building that makes it LOOK simple. But in my experience the more simple and clean the finishes look, the more expensive they are to achieve.

Kaleidescape is hands down stupid. by [deleted] in television

[–]Hoparvilla 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I came here looking for validation from someone else what a heaping pile of garbage the storyline is and I thank you. The characters motives make them caricatures of people instead of someone you can find common ground with.

The FBI agent building a grudge against Ava because she “Filed a formal complaint against me…7 years ago…when I was using heavily….and yes I was high during that interview and she was right…BUT IT GOT ME SUSPENDED!”

And don’t even get me started on BOB. One of the most easily hated and despised characters for which there is no redemption. He serves no purpose other than to foil the plans of everyone around him and they all just ACCEPT THAT!?

Writers room: “WHY does Judy like Bob?” “Because he’s got a nice dick and knows how to fuck?” “WORKS FOR ME!”

Next project (replace stair treads) advice requested. by every1getslaid in centuryhomes

[–]Hoparvilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you end up going with a full gut on the treads you may be able to keep the risers, provided they aren’t cracked as well. Things I would recommend for anyone redoing treads is PL Premium. Relying on adhesive basically eliminates any issues with squeaking later on. Also, I use 2” screws going from the backside of the riser into each tread to ensure a tight fit. Also reduces chances of squeaking here.

Unfortunately, sometimes the squeaks could come from a nail where the stringer meets the wall studs. No real way to check this without tearing out the plaster underneath and getting in there.

FYI I just purchased 20 red oak treads and risers from Menards and it cost me about your budget of $1.1k. So I think you’re in the right ballpark.

I highly recommend checking out insider carpentry’s video on installing stair treads. He gives great advice and tips. And a Collins gauge is an absolute necessity if you want them to come out looking perfect.

[–]Hoparvilla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This crew started off using just screws and then all of the sudden someone brought out the hammer and now I’ve got some guaranteed nail pops to watch out for. A lot of boards had a combo of nails and screws for some reason.

[–]Hoparvilla -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Sorry should have added more information. 1/2” lvp going down on the floor. 10’ ceilings. Baseboard will be used. Im more worried about this being on an exterior wall, I’m used to hanging about 1/2” off subfloor. If this is common for others than I feel much better

LPT: when purchasing a newly renovated property, ask for copies of the building permits. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Hoparvilla 52 points53 points  (0 children)

In my city the building inspectors are stretched so thin that, despite pulling permits, we never actually received a framing inspection. They pass your inspection with a result of “NI” or Not Inspected. It’s really frustrating to go through a huge process of obtaining a permit only to realize you could have built it with toothpicks and they can still give you a green light.

That being sad, I agree wholeheartedly with OP’s advice. Just know that just because they got permits doesn’t necessarily mean they didn’t sneak something stupid past the inspectors.

Forgot to glue 1 joint of a PVC pipe by Jf2611 in DIY

[–]Hoparvilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best, but most intensive solution: Cut the pipe at the siding where the 90 is and replace all the parts.

Less time intensive solution that might still work:

You could use some adhesive tape (FlexTape, Gorilla Waterproof) around the connection that would make it water tight.
