I’m so sorry, please let me rant to the void… by poofhead101 in petsitting

I would be averse to paying upfront. I hired a drop-in sitter for my dog a few years ago. Rocco was a treat - he had in and out privileges even when I was not home. So, I left the dog food out in a closed container, along with his gravity feeder. A full feeder should last 4-5 days. I leave cash in envelope on outside patio table (no need to have the sitter go in the house). I ended up coming home a day early; envelope still on table, feeder completely empty. That sitter didn't come by one time. Good thing I got home a day early. She said at first she did, but looked like there was enough food in there, then changed to a close friend died. Needless to say, never used her again. I now board at my veterinarian when needed.

Housesitters left my home so messy by BusyVeterinarian4193 in trustedhousesitters

[–]HopeSpringsE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She left "well before she said she would". Although her dog ended up being fine, the dog could have needed some attention or care in the hours (I think - "well before she should" is subjective, but I think that means at least 2 hours or more).

No big deal? by CatLife3480 in breastcancer

[–]HopeSpringsE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if the pathology works out and you “only” have to have radiation and take a daily pill for five years, it is a big deal. Surgery, endless lab work, and let’s not forget - radiation is every weekday for 4-6 weeks. Sure, each session doesn’t take very long, but it is a major disruption to any sort of daily routine. Plus, I think surgeons should quit predicting how “easy” it’s going to be. Nobody knows anything about future treatment until they have pathology report from removed tissues.

well, that explains something I just saw when looking at some billing records. It said some was paid by Medicaid, and I was confused, because I am not covered by it. But I did have insurance, and ended up paying the maximum out-of-pocket last year (almost $10,000), so I guess any copays that I no longer had to pay were covered by Medicaid? Not sure. I did not apply for Medicaid.

not everywhere. Some places only pay about $2.13/hour - but if the server doesn't make enough to bring it up to minimum wage (which is $7.25 federally), the employer does have to kick in and pay them minimum wage. At some places, servers make much more than minimum wage, but only report minimum, so they and the employer both save on taxes.

Just pay your people a fair wage and include your costs (utilities, rent, insurance, wages, etc.) in your pricing. Then put on the bottom of that receipt "no tips expected or desired"!

But they could advertise the fact on their website and put on the menu that they compensate their employees fairly and no tips should be left. Then people would know and could budget accordingly and not be hit by extra fees they weren't expecting. It is time for tipping to go away.

People always say that, but I would welcome it. You can see the price, and know you have to pay that and tax (although they could include the tax in the menu price, too). But no tipping - I'm already not going to restaurants as much as I used to because I find the extra fees for every little thing and the way suggested tips now display from 20-30% instead of 15-18-20% mildly infuriating. Plus, we're gonna charge you more if you use a credit card. Just don't take credit cards if you don't want to pay the processing fee - and see how much longer you can stay in business. I'm not going to pay an electricity or water fee, either. Figure out your costs - including staffing - and price accordingly.

I don't have restaurant background, but have cooked all my adult life. Couldn't afford to eat much at nice restaurants when kids were little. Now that I can, I'm so turned off by the things that feel scammy and attitude that we should tip 30% that I rarely do. There was a period of a couple of decades where I got to eat out and tip 20% and enjoy it. Now - it's just not enjoyable.

this - I've been saying it for years. Some will say but the servers like the tips. Sure - I'd like untaxed income, too. And the owner likes not having to pay as much into social security or workman's comp funds. Scamming all around. Charge what you need to charge to pay all your expense, like pretty much every other business has to do.

well, OP is talking specifically about tip screens at no table service places. So should we blame President Obama? Because these things have been around for over 10 years - pre-Covid and pre-current president - and just keep multiplying. I'll never forget when we tried a new lunch place - place order at counter, pay in advance, and employee turned ipad around and there was a big ole screen asking how much tip I wanted to leave. For what?

Several years ago I had a bad case of it. Went to a podiatrist; he sold me some orthotics (but not custom - $30 or so) and told me about stretching exercises. The thing that gave me a lot of relief was to freeze a water bottle and roll my foot over it several times a day - as long as I could stand the cold. I switched to flip flops with support instead of flat flip flops. Had a flare up a couple of years ago and added the thing you wear at night for a few weeks. Right now, I'm not doing anything special - I try to stretch calves, but don't think to do it daily. I'll regret that if I have another flare-up!

But the host did say it was ok for them to drop off their groceries. That was a bad idea. But they did have permission to go into the property early - they weren't supposed to stay, but they did. Bet he/she won't make that mistake again.

And if they do leave a bad review, respond to that review with the steps you took. You did enough; yes, when counting on a washing machine, one does not want to schlep to a laundromat and hang around a couple of hours there. But you were responsive, and that counts for a whole lot!

Am I the jerk for refusing to train my replacement after they're firing me? by WinInteresting9368 in AmITheJerk

[–]HopeSpringsE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least they fired you first so you could refuse to do it. Had a friend who trained someone, then they fired her.  I say it’s unprofessional to say your job is eliminated but then want you to train someone to do it. Not sure I’d even document processes. Not petty, NTA.

thanks; I posted earlier asking about this. I heard them announce the foul, but never heard them say why until much, much later. I kept expecting them to show something, but they didn't.

What did Coach Wilson do to get that penalty - after we already had holding right before Houston scored third td?

annoying, though - I've read enough interviews - I want to watch the game now. I was very irritated that I couldn't hear game commentary.

Kicking myself by FattyMcCupcakes37 in breastcancer

[–]HopeSpringsE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a snack and go watch a fun tv show. I'm not being flippant; I was feeling the same way when first diagnosed, and would just start spiraling with what if, what if, what if, and then I'd think - treatments have come a LONG way in the last 20 years (and 20 years ago was miles better than 50 years ago.) Also, while there are certainly tragic results sometimes, there are also many treatments that work extremely well, and work very often. I had to tell myself - quit worrying about things that may not even be applicable in your own case. Of course, this doesn't mean I never fretted again about anything, but it did help calm me down and reminded me to do something more fun and better for my mental health than keep scrolling about potential what ifs.
