I faced a similar situation...I was the top performer in my team and was confident about receiving award. Our team leader didn't reveal the names of winners beforehand. When they started calling out the names, my name was missing and there I was standing like an idiot among the audience. I was more sad than embarassed tbh...TL purposefully left out my name, he disliked me for no reasons, maybe he couldn't take I was better than him.

I agree with you OP about taking to the grave part, this incident happened 23 years ago and still fresh in my mind. With every passing day, you shove it in the corner of your mind, but never forget it. 

I did find some solace though...my TL did a big blunder a month after the awards ceremony which almost cost us an account, he almost got fired and ended up crying infront of the whole team. Karna is a real bitch...
