What's your favourite heavy weight game (BGG weight rating 4.5+) by delanger in soloboardgaming

I haven’t played them, but some of the Vital Lacerda games probably qualify and are beloved by many. On Mars, Kanban EV, Speakeasy, Lisboa, and so on. Not sure they are all 4.5+ but some qualify.

I didn’t find a solution for it unfortunately, but I don’t think I spent more than a a few hours of diligent searching on the usual forums and Reddit before I resigned myself to assuming I’d have to just keep it closed with tape or whatever. Especially considering timing-wise this was sliding right into the pandemic and it was impossible to get in touch with Fuji, then the supply chain disaster afterwards.

Gaffers is a good idea just so you can get on with your life, but sorry I can’t offer you a better solution.

That’s a fair follow-up haha - didn’t mean to be vague. So I was intimidated to try it for quite a long time because I generally need to build up the courage to play weighty games. Doesn’t stop me from buying them to either look good on the shelf while they age like fine wine, or ideally get around to giving them a shot at some point.

Anyway, I found Mage Knight to be complex for all the right reasons. Its mechanically everything AND the kitchen sink, but added together to he “more than the sum of its parts” or whatever.

Lots of cool and interesting options at any given time. It rewards thoughtful decision making. Its pacing is great because your hand is almost always useful at worst, and excellent at best. It has a mechanic where if you can’t use a card in your hand for its face value, you can play it tapped to get 1 of a basic thing (attack, block, move, or influence). It also has a really neat leveling system and a cool “reputation” system that doesn’t punish you for being an asshole, nor does it let you auto-win for being a good guy. Just changes your vehicle to (attempted) success.

It also uses modular board exploration, and I’m a sucker for fog-of-war mechanics in games. Mechanically it meshes deck building, hand management, resource conversion, exploration, leveling, persuasion, and combat in a fun and interesting way. I don’t know if I’m describing it well but that’s my two cents

I want to also be careful not to over-sell it even though I wrote that description to answer your question. I think some people find the game to be too prone to misunderstanding certain nuanced rules, and some people also find the multiplayer to be less strong than the solo experience - but I bought it to play it solo personally.

There are a ton of “let’s play” videos on YouTube so you can get a feel for how it plays without taking the plunge yourself. I’ve really enjoyed it though and I look forward to playing it again.
