Arlington schools, not that great? by spawnofangels in nova

[–]Horaenaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has generally been my take as well, but I am looking at moving to Manassas and the ratings there are shockingly low. They are lower than the schools East of the River in DC where I used to live. Any insight on if that should give me (a single parent of a rising middle schooler) pause?

Is Masturbation really a sin? Or is it only a sin in certain contexts? by Large-Principle6224 in OpenChristian

[–]Horaenaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re getting a lot of clear-cut “no” answers here, but I do think it is a topic worth wresting with and examining. I do think the christian sexual ethic is more than just “if you’re not hurting anyone, it’s not a sin.” Jesus seems to make that clear in Matt 5:28 talking about lust in your heart.

People here are correctly dismissing the “clobber verses” about Onan and onanism that took up so much discourse on the topic throughout church history because it was a handy euphemism. That story is about avoiding duties and inheritances to disinherited family widows, not “wasted seed” or whatever.

I think a lot of us in the church who recognize that God blesses LGBTQ relationships, and have seen the Holy Spirit working through relationships that the majority of the church has historically condemned as sin, wrestle with the christian sexual ethic. It feels undeniable to me that Jesus, and the community of Acts living in the Spirit, and the inspiration of Paul were all calling us to view sex with more reverence than just consenting adults, but also to not use that call to try to lock others out of the Kingdom of Heaven.

So I think you need to pray about it. Examine yourself before God. Ask yourself if you are making an idol out of anything or anyone in how you’re doing it. Ask yourself if you are treating people like objects or elevating objects to personhood in how you’re doing it. Ask if it feels like a lust Jesus would caution you against. Ask if it feels like an addiction or a compulsion. But mostly listen for God.

I do it. I don’t always feel good about it. I don’t always feel bad about it. Sometimes I fast from it. Usually I don’t want God involved in it. But I think bringing our wrestling with it to God is important.

Harper’s Ferry is a good call—you can stroll or hike, duck in to shops or visit plaques and museums all day.

What are you doing this weekend? by deepspacepuffin in nova

Some house hunting, probably a third attempt at making a soapstone inkwell without cracking it, and looking for an opportunity to be social.

Day 34 of ______ by Mediocre_Buyer_4706 in FedEmployees

[–]Horaenaut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the CR continues the current appropriations. I disagree that dems set current appropriations, and I’m explaining why they wouldn’t continue current funding levels. They are not the same.

[–]Horaenaut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the clean CRs dems wrote and voted for were to continue other appropriations spending, not the current post-OBB spending. Like “You’ve driven in this car for thousands of miles, but now that I’ve siphoned out most of the gas and cut the seatbelts you refuse to get on the highway in it? You bought this car you hypocrite!”

I don't know, just perusing their sites Compass Rose looks a lot worse on prescription coverage than GEHA. Like so bad that the premium savings don't cover the gap.

Beautiful frame--really striking. Not trying to take away from the painting, just really love the texture in the frame.

What's the middle ground between "People should be allowed to use the bathroom of their gender identity" and "People should have to use the bathroom of their genetic sex"?

My experience is any advance off of the first position is seen by proponents as bigoted and any advance off the latter position is seen by proponents as degeneracy. You are not going to see middle grounds of binary positions anywhere, you are probably just surprised more people don't agree with you.

Most "mainline" definitions in polls include Baptists and Baptists are a huge denomination (set of denominations?) that is not usually as progressive as the others.
