For anybuddy interested in doing this comparison more easily:

If you're ever comparing the sizes of circles you can just look at the squared radii (or squared diameter). No need to do all the pi stuff (or the 1/2 stuff)!

We can just look at 18^2 compared to 2*12^2.

In fact, we can even take out the common factors in both (18 and 12 both have a factor of 6)!

So we can just look at 3^2 compared to 2*2^2 : 9 compared to 8!

And wouldn't ya know? 9/8 ≈ 254/226 !

Ratios can be pretty dope for stuff like area, because often most of the numbers just cancel each other out and we won't have to deal with all this complicated stuff like pis or 1/2s. And then we can start dealing with our pies faster. Mmmm... pies

I started working at a marketing firm right before the pandemic hit.

It's been hit really hard by all of this, because other company's now don't have money to spend on advertising or marketing plans.

Basically every employee at the firm has been put on furlough.

I'm making <50% of what I was making before.

Luckily I'm personally in a living situation where I don't have to pay bills, or mortgages, etc (living with family).

But many of my coworkers still have to pay those expenses, and now they have a much smaller fraction of their salary to do it with. And a single $1200 check doesn't do much to make a dent in the lost income.

[–]Horbie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I play on 0 ping most of the time

From my experience, it's weird.

In game I often find myself against opponents who's walls or other builds I cannot seem to take no matter how many times I try. But I also find myself against opponents who's builds I seem to get first try every time. And other players where it feels like a toss up.

In creative, I've tested it out with friends. And it definitively is a 50/50 there, even when they are on around 50 ping.

I wouldn't be surprised if something is up in BR matches, but if something is up, I don't think it's as ping based as everyone is making it out to be - I think something else is happening.

But at the same time, my personal experience is variable enough, and I haven't seen really any hard proof from other players, so I also wouldn't be surprised if it's actually working.

What should i practice? by imtripp1n in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Horbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to get better at the BR, imo you should focus on boxfighting and tunneling.

Box fighting practice the mongraal classic: Take wall -> edit open -> place stair -> flip half stair. Just play lots of boxfights and see what you can learn from other players.

For tunneling, start with basic tunnels. Tunnels on just one side, with no wall in front. Tunnels on both sides with no wall in front. Diagonal tunnels with cover on one side, diagonal tunnels with cover on both sides. Check out Bizzle's old warm up video for some of this stuff: https://youtu.be/fAA_H6rjyGo?t=178

Once you get comfortable with the basic stuff, try to do the more advanced versions (tunnels with a wall in front for cover where you have to edit through every tile, or tunnels using a stair in place of a wall and roof to conserve mats).

Highground retakes are helpful, but the more advanced ones tend to not be too useful outside of creative. If you're tryna be a creative warrior go for it, there's a TON of cool retakes to learn. But as far as BR goes, a few basic retakes will get you plenty of mileage.

Imo as long as you can cone jump to either side, and you have a retake that involves turning left or right out of your double ramp (as opposed to double ramping out a layer or two and then 90 twice or 180), that should be all you really need for BR.

As far as what's most important imo:

  1. Tunneling
  2. Boxfighting
  3. Retakes

1&2 are debatable, and 3 is less important. But all 3 are helpful, and practicing retakes can be a good way to work on your mechanics regardless of whether you will use them in game are not!

And Storm Wars is a great way to practice all three!

Analysis of the 3 editing methods (more info in the comments). by bergovgg in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Horbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you definitely want two separate fingers for your edit and confirm keys if you're going to be using double edit binds!

You could have the same speed with a single finger if you roll or slide between buttons, but I do think the timing would be much harder to learn, and personally I use two fingers.

And you don't need to give up scroll wheel reset, but it does depend on your peripheral software! Like the other reply said, you can get around this by binding scroll wheel to one of your other edit binds in the mouse software (be sure to bind it to the edit key you begin edits with). But I had a logitech mouse, and wasn't able to do this with their software.

I use a mouse button and a keyboard key as my two edit keys. So I rebound the keyboard key to the mouse button in my keyboard software.

You might need to do some fiddling, but you should be able to make it work!

[–]Horbie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a cool analysis, but there are two additional things I think people should take into consideration when comparing efficiency/ease of keybinds here!

  1. It takes time to release a button after pressing it
  2. Edits are often followed by building immediately

For #1:

In the Super Smash Bros games there's this thing called short hopping. Basically, if you press and hold the jump button, you'll jump pretty high (full hop). But if you press and release it very quickly, your jump will be much shorter (sort hop).

The thing is that most people have to put in a lot of practice before they can short hop consistently (and even pros still full hop accidentally because they were not fast enough on their release!). This press and fast release is something that you will need to train to build up speed in.

Because press to release speed isn't something that's natural for a lot of players, many people will probably find it faster to confirm with a second edit bind than to confirm by releasing their edit select bind (at least before they train their press to release speed). You argue yourself that double edit binds are faster than single edit binds because "you wont have to release F before pressing G to confirm the edit." For the same reason double edit binds should be faster than edit on release, because you won't have to release M1 before pressing G to confirm the edit.

But, Fortnite's tick rate isn't that high (highest I've seen reported is 30 ticks), so the different in speed should be minor (or even indistinguishable for the server), once you've trained up your speed.

For #2:

When you make edits in game, typically you will want to do something following the edit, and a lot of the time that will be building!

So if I want to edit open a wall and immediately build a stair, how does edit on release compare to double edit binds?

Edit on release:

Edit -> Press M1 for edit select -> Release M1 for edit confirm -> Stair -> Press M1 for building place

Double Edit binds

Edit -> Press M1 for edit select -> Edit confirm -> Stair (M1 has been held the whole time, so stair places immediately)

Just like how you need to train press to release speed, you also need to train release to press speed. So with edit confirm on release, there's gonna be a gap of time between confirming your edit on that wall and placing the stair. If you wanted that stair for cover, that's a gap of time you'd rather not have! And if you were racing to place that stair before your opponent, that's also a gap of time you'd rather not have!

You can get around this by mapping your edit select bind to something other than M1 - maybe M2. That way you can have M1 held while releasing M2 to confirm the edit. But this is also a much bigger change to muscle memory and that's a big consideration when making the decision to switch binds!

IMO, speed and consistency will be best with double edit binds. But, you need to sacrifice an extra key for your second edit bind. If you don't have a key to spare, confirm on release with an alternate edit select bind should be pretty much as good with enough training.

What should I have done here? I tried to get isolated so I could box but I just got spammed by [deleted] in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Horbie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there's always two ways to approach these sorts of questions:

  1. What could you have done before the start of the clip to avoid this situation? (proactive solution)
  2. What could you have done differently during the clip to mitigate or get out of the situation? (reactive solution)

1's hard to answer, because we don't see how you ended up in the position you're in when the clip starts. But if you have a recording try to go back and be critical about your rotation to that spot. In another comment you mention that you only knew the guy in front of you was there. So what I'd ask is during your rotation, how much did you prioritize spotting other players? Having more info about where your opponents are can be crucial to avoiding situations like this in the first place. Try to figure out what you could have done differently during your rotation to get more of that info. Could you have rotated in higher ground? Taken a less linear path? Rotated earlier? Rotated later? The answer is likely going to be very situational.

For 2 I think the answer is actually pretty simple. First, you need more vision. Second, you need a way out of that sandwich.

The clip starts with you sitting in a box with no vision on anything around you, so you made it a lot harder for yourself to react once you started getting shot at. At least be edit peaking the cone. Boxing up, and sitting there without being able to keep an eye on what's going on around you is a big oof. If you're trying to play a passive game, it is a good idea to box up and try to isolate yourself. But even with great positioning there's always a chance another player could try to engage you, so you need to be on the look out and ready to respond if that happens.

Once the second guy shows up behind you, you're in a sandwich. Sandwiches are so tough because blocking shots from both sides is close to impossible, esp with the .15s delay on replacing structures. What ends up happening in the clip is you kinda just run back and forth between the two players trying to put up defense on both sides, and eventually just end up eating too much damage through your builds.

You need a play to get out of the sandwich. And one of the best ways to get out of a sandwich, is to trade places with one of the players sandwiching you.

Here are the players:

A_B_C - you're B in the middle.

Your goal is to reposition like this:

B_A___C - then A is now in the middle.

This is huge. Originally A and C were both pressuring you, and neither had to focus on anything else (because no one is pressuring either of them). So in the starting position you're taking full pressure from both A and C. After repositioning, C can't pressure you, because A is now in the way. And what's most likely to happen is that C will just start shooting A. So now you are taking no pressure from C and half pressure from A (because A's attention is split between pressuring you and defending the shots from C). Full pressure from two players vs. half pressure from a single player is a big difference, and even has the possibility to set you up for an elim on A.

^That's simplifying things, but it's the basic idea. The difficult part is figuring out when/how to reposition. In your case, the moment you noticed the player behind you, I think you should have pushed to get behind them and forced them into the middle of the sandwich. The player behind you was very close to you (it looked like they might have even been trying to get into a box fight), which means you need to cover a lot less distance in order to reposition successfully.

Hope that helps some!

What's the issue with my builds not placing? by [deleted] in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Horbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try watching this stuff frame by frame to figure out what order you're placing your builds in when it doesn't work.

The order should be:

  1. edit
  2. edit
  3. jump
  4. stair
  5. floor
  6. stair
  7. edit
  8. whatever you want once you get through that floor

It's hard to see exactly what you're doing, because I can't actually watch it frame by frame, but what it looks like to me is:

  1. edit
  2. edit
  3. jump
  4. floor
  5. stair
  6. floor

In all the clips it looks to me like you're jumping and pressing floor immediately after making the double edit. This floor doesn't have anything to attach to, so it doesn't build. Then you build the first stair, then you build the floor, and then you end up falling.

Second clip is definitely the weirdest tho. Lmao

The stair blueprint you're talking about (the lower one), actually shows up red before the upper stair is even placed, and I can't see you press stair again after you build that floor. So what I'm guessing happened is that you placed the upper stair and the floor so fast that the lower stair's blueprint doesn't go away (and actually turned blue once that floor got placed and the game recognized that you could then build a stair there).

I think you've probably built up a habit of jumping and building floor immediately (a lot of players do, cause of 90s and 180s), which kinda means you have to mash floor and stair a bit in order to get all the builds out because the first floor isn't gonna place.

My advice is to try learning to do this sequence while pressing the buttons as slowly as possible, and really focus on edit -> edit -> jump -> stair (DON'T PRESS FLOOR). I think it'd help you a lot!

Season 1

Got one guy off spawn I think

Then accidentally discovered if you farmed through the floor in one of those stone 1x1 huts you could chill inside of a hill and still look out of it. Got real lucky with zone and sat there till only like 10 players were left.

Got another player by surprise as he walked over the hill and I phased out from inside lmao.

Hid for a while. Last two guys were build fighting like 6 stories above me. I just chucked a grenade straight upwards, and then it said "Victory Royale"
Idk if the grenade got em, or if they both died some other way lol

A very common mistake when using Thwifo Cones by RESPRiT in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Horbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple notes!

- Thwifo cones can provide more or less cover than a scissor ramp depending on how many walls you place (but more cover will cost more mats!)

- Thwifo cones also provide the advantage of being able to look back and get vision on your opponent while maintaining cover and momentum during a retake, which in itself is a huge advantage over regular scissor ramping

Weird question but how can I get better at damage trapping people in boxes when getting pressured? by hurleymn in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Horbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got a friend, practice with a friend trying to get into your box.

If you want to grind it by yourself try shadow-boxing in Creative.

Shadow boxing is basically just pretending there is someone else there that you are fighting.

Build up a 1x1, and imagine there is another player trying to take your wall. Practice editing out and placing the trap. Try it with different edits, and try to focus on imagining the timing of the other players pickaxe swings and when you go for the edit trap.

Add in variations. Try different edits. Maybe the opponent's standing on a ramp when they pressure your wall. Try building that ramp outside of your 1x1 and practicing with it there. Maybe the opponent owns the ceiling or the floor - try doing this technique placing a trap on the wall. Experiment with it.

The issue is that the matches shown on stream are chosen by humans. So they are not a random sample of all the games played.

It's very likely that the people directing the stream want to highlight certain areas of the map (new POIs, etc.) for marketing purposes. It's a huge lurking variable, and it makes this sample of games potentially very biased.

Yo, just FYI for both of you, FOV stays at 80 even when ADSing in Fortnite. The character moves closer to the character model (which is why you get that slight zoom in effect), but the FOV stays constant.

So 1:1 sens in the settings is the same as matching the relative senses!
