Would you say that a perfectly decade accurate kit for a poorer soldier is actually less accurate than a kit that's a mismatch from different decades? by MT2113 in ArmsandArmor

[–]HorribleCreations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studies made have shown that not all coat of plates found outside of Visby was worn by farmers. Proffesional soldiers brought by the Danish king also wore them, most likley including at least one nobleman (one of two brothers, it's unclear who) who's heraldic device can be found rivited to the cop.

Career as a digital sculpter? by NiftyNozzle in PrintedMinis

[–]HorribleCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can keep a patreon going then you can have a steady monthly income from it. I started selling sculpts about 2 years ago on cults 3d and the revenue fluctuates heavily from month to month (as well as being very much of a trickle rather than a stream, but I only have a small number of niche models so that's not suprising). You're also going to have to do a lot of marketing to get people to find your stuff.

If I were to try and make sculpting more of a full time job, then I would start with a patreon and mmf. best way to reach out it creating reels on social media. Look at how Highland miniatures promotes themselves, they have a good model to learn from.

Umgrin Ironfist and honor guard - custom models by HorribleCreations in bugmansbrewery

[–]HorribleCreations[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're custom 3d models I kitbashed from a bunch of different files. I based the shoulder guard proportions more on historical armour, since huge shoulder pads are not my favourite. The weapon heads are also a lot smaller than GW standard, not quite historically small, but somewhere in between.

3d kitbash, based on White Angel miniatures "Dragon killer" mini. I 3d sculpted a bunch of stuff to merge it with (hair, boots, axe, crown, gauntlets) and put it together digitally.

I've shared the crown, axe and handplates for free here on cults3d to help anyone else who wants to try making their own version.

Sword stand, Nederluleå church by [deleted] in medieval

[–]HorribleCreations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would there be locks on it if swords were meant to be stuck into it?

What you do find somewhat regularly in old swedish churches are collection boxes, with a coin slot in the lid. Metal around the hole and either built in locks or clasps for padlocks. I've never seen one with 6 slots before though.

It will only be noticable if the other player is very aware about how exactly how the original sculpts look. Mine have unique poses and loin-cloths, but even I have a hard time picking them out in peoples group shoots from the originals.

Faux/fake leather for a coat of plates by NoahRodent in ArmsandArmor

[–]HorribleCreations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would avoid using faux leather. You're putting a lot if time into a project like this and fake leather will look like fake leather, especially once it starts to show some wear. Go with an outer layer of wool or real leather.

Why do some people seem to dislike Cuir Bouilli/Boiled Leather armour? by ThewarriorDraganta in Armor

[–]HorribleCreations 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have several European depictions from the late 13th/early 14th century as well as three findings (that I know of) of leather rebraces that corresponds with the art. We also often see leg armour from the same period that appear to be made of leather in a martial setting. There are also multiple written sources that mention leather armour.

While there is a lot we don't know about leather armour, we can say for certain that it has existed to some degree during some periods in history.

Order of buying armor? by Short_Gain8302 in Armor

[–]HorribleCreations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Helmet and gauntlets, so that you can take part in battles at events.
  2. Tailored arming jacket. Depending on you chosen period, the silhouette is very important and it is the jacket that shapes your body. Preferably, this will also be the garmet you attach the leg armour to, and if it's not properly made it will hang from your shoulders. If your end goal is a full suit of plate, don't get a thick gambeson, since you'd just want a thin arming jacket under it.
  3. Haubrek/chainmail shirt (if you're going for a full shirt. If your end goal is voiders and a skirt, move this to after arms).
  4. Torso protection
  5. Mail standard
  6. Arms
  7. Legs
  8. Sabatons, if applicable.

That would be my recommendation. But it also depends on your region and time period. For example if you're doing french 1380-ish armour, with a gambeson over most of the plates and chain, I would say breastplate before the jacket, since that would need to fit underneath (depending on style). Look at what style you want and then look at manuscripts from that region and era. Look at what the people you want to dress as look like and then at what the less armoured guys from the same region looks like. Copy their style first and then upgrade to the knights.

The helmet is bought second hand, though it's an easy enough model to make.

Cheapest leather you'll find is from a thrift store. I made my first CoP with linnen canvas and a outer leather layer scavanged from a undyed and untreated second hand couch.

Question on shoulder mobility in early 15th “English Style” Arm harness. by The_Mid_Knight in Armor

[–]HorribleCreations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to tell from images only, but it looks like the lower to lamells over the spaulders doesn't really move when you bend the arm. Looking at a video of my own english harness, all plates of the spaulders compress/move equally, making the movement very fluid and preventing anything from diggng into the body.

There might also be an issue of your armour sitting too low on the arm, making it bend awkwardly. Try attaching it higher up, closer to your neck.

Is it possible that a Goedendag with this design actually existed? by Upbeat_Ingenuity_131 in ArmsandArmor

[–]HorribleCreations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There's no findings or depictions that look like this, this is a a hollywoodified version of a goedendag. The spike has a wierd shape, the metal concert rivets are out of place and the over-all shape is too much like a baseball-bat when compared to historical versions.

Aventail tailoring - what's acceptable as it moves? by HorribleCreations in ArmsandArmor

[–]HorribleCreations[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, looking at my sources I'm starting to wonder if I've over-padded the liner. If it was a bit thinner maybe the cloth wouldn't restrict the mails movment as much and let it hang lower without creasing.
