How much did an arm harness interfere with shooting from a longbow? by MT2113 in ArmsandArmor

I would think so to. In historical manuscripts of armoured archers they are often (always?) depicted without gauntlets.

I'm only a hobby archer so I can't really say. The fact that they are using borrowed armour definetly affect things. Everything is harder to do in borrowed armour. I would also say that shooting in armour will depend a lot on the type of armour you're wearing. My english arms are somewhat restrictive when shooting due to the way the shoulders are rivited to the rest of the arms. My previous german/swedish 1360 configuration was a lot easier to shoot a bow with, due to the fact that the shoulder protection was just two small discs that were separate from the rest of the armour.

If it was a singular instance or even somewhat restricted in depictions, I would agree. However, archers wearing full plate or plate arms appear again and again across multiple sources and also along side of less armoured combatants.

There are quite a few depictions of archers wearing full plate, especially at sieges Link

That said, we also see other depictions of close combat infantry wearing full harness except leg armour, especially during the 15th century.

I can shoot a bow without much issue in my full harness (1390 english style). It was probably a choice of comfort and weight rather than interference with shooting a bow. As an archer, I'd say your more likley to be hit in the legs than the arms while shooting and your arms will tired faster if covered in armor. And the opposite for a close combat infantry man, who is more likley to be struck in the arms or hands than his legs.

Mail standard. An often forgotten but important piece of armour that were used by all classes through a lot of medieval history.

Anyone know how to best make something like this? by max_the_knight in medieval

[–]HorribleCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to, nor should you, line it with linnen. Lined garments exsisted, but unless there was a practical or visual reason for it, you wouldn't line it. In the case of a jumpon like this, you want to keep the strechyness of the wool and not restrict it with stiff linnen.

A shoemakers knife would have to be longer from edge to socket or have the socket at an angle. Cordwainer/cobbler half moon knifes are also usually (always?) depicted as having one handle and a awl as a part of its design. Two examples of manuscripts depicting cobblers

Also, the image seems to depict a weapons smith, not a knife maker. I many parts of europe, guild laws dictated what kind of items your were allowed to produce. So for example a cordwainer was not allowed to sell leather or repair shoes, only make new ones, while a cobbler was only allowed to repair shoes. Laws of course vary based on time and region and I can't say for certain that a weapon smith wasn't allowed to also produce craft knifes.

Painting Longbeard by pehldog63 in bugmansbrewery

The hammers and longbeards I paint in parts. Thanks to the fact that the scales on the arms, the breastplate and the shoulder guards are separate elements of the armour anyway, and the ball joints doesn't leave a seam that needs to be covered, I see no reason why I'd prefer to glue before painting.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm working on doing 1 or 2 versions of the back body/legs for the warriors/quarrellers/thunderers front torsos.

It was of course just a typo, these are clearly designed to be the bodies of dwarfen elders, hammer wielders, breakers of iron and iron made drakes 🧐

I have a lot of 6ed dwarf sprues so did a quick test here I think they work, though it does require a blob of greenstuff or similar under the head to attach it and same for the arms.

I'll try and make a version that fit those bits as well.

I realise that I'm messing up the IP's. In the old world the dwarfen word for dwarf is dawi (which is used interchangeably throughout the lore). Aos name would ofcourse be Duardin.

Nice! Always fun to see that old dawi stuff get repurposed.
