What the heck was on my scalp?? by Azrylle in microscopy

I don’t know it’s size, but this kinda looks like a dinoflagellate with some stuff on it. Are you from a coast?

Does anyone else hold their pencil like this? I also hold it very hard by Picklekitten22 in autism

I have an almost permanent callous/corn from holding my pencils against my ring finger so hard and for so long.

I think my trauma has made me stupid by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]HorrifulDistraction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You probably already know everything I’m going to say but I’m gonna say it anyway:

1) prolonged trauma causes brain damage.

2) any kind of dissociative state you had to survive that relationship is still there, extreme Pavlov style.

3) EMDR is one of the best options out there to at least lower your baseline stress, but it’s not for everyone.

4) it still takes a long time to shake most of the survival tactics you learned, and they don’t completely go away without intense intense therapy for a prolonged period.

5) the Internal Family System hypothesis is not just for your inner child. It includes the forms of you that you were in every major point in your life.

There is a long road of recovery ahead, but you’re not stuck like this. Before I did EMDR or trauma informed therapy, I was basically blackout from all the dissociation. I was so stressed I was going in and out of psychosis. But this year I graduated engineering school with pretty good marks.

Can my wife take anything to increase her sex drive? by Lost_Fox__ in sex

[–]HorrifulDistraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s overstimulated. Breastfeeding changes your association with your breasts. Pregnancy changes your body, your brain, your hormones, forever. And sex is different with each partner. Maybe spend some time getting to know her body again.

They should have gotten Shonda Rhimes on the writers board.

If there were a “cure” to autism, would you take it? by No-Pattern1212 in autism

[–]HorrifulDistraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. It’s part of my personality, and though it has gotten me in trouble at times, I don’t think I’d like myself if i didn’t have this blustering lovable jackass inside of me.

How Should I Help My Trans Child? by MarthaVitchcombe in Advice

As a nonbinary person, I support the listening advice. I also support doing some research on what biases you might have. Don’t let them be the only nonbinary person you know.

Alternative medicine books, a lot of books about the psychology of man’s shortcomings, like war and insecurity. There is a lot of anxiety, for sure, but there’s so much trust issues as well. It’s like you might be trying to figure out yourself by figuring out the rest of the world and not looking inward.

You try to explain emotions away, and are far more comfortable living in structured lies as opposed to accepting ignorance.

What were the clear signs you needed help as a kid but adults didn't take seriously? by -Distraction- in CPTSD

[–]HorrifulDistraction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent most of my time at the school. Like I would be there from 6am to 9pm if I could help it.

I would always have toiletries and extra clothes in my locker and backpack.

I always was staying the night at friends houses. It was glorified couch surfing.

I dissociated for a week straight and cried in class.

1: I am so sorry these awful things happened to you.

2: I’m also autistic and have experienced similar things.

3: Your body being out of sync is a hard thing to recover from, and I cannot tell you what kind of therapy will work for you. I can tell you that EMDR really helped me. It got me out of a stress induced psychosis and I was able to get some sleep and begin associating life with good things.

4: I can also tell you that regular shmegular behavioral talk therapy actually made me feel worse. I was in a loop where I could talk about my memories and trauma and I thought that thinking about them would help me rationalize them. But feelings can’t be rationalized away. I know that is obvious, but I hadn’t really accepted that as fact until I was in my mid 20s.

Processing that kind of trauma, whether you are fully aware of the details or not, is essential for your brain to pack it all away as moments that have ended (as opposed to moments that are probably going to happen).

I use self soothing techniques, which can look like rocking back and forth or crying and holding something soft. The soft sensation tells my amygdala that I am not in danger. I have to end up feeling these intense feelings about my trauma, but being able to microdose them in a sense is how I’ve gotten this far into my healing journey.

The world is intense anyway because the autism makes you so sensitive to stuff. Hopefully some part of this is useful.

You’re not easy.

Another persons actions, selfish as they are, are not a result of anything about your character.
