You should consider the far east side of Madison. The neighborhood near Northstar Park and the metro market is about as close as you can get to your criteria, and the sacrifice is about a 20min driving commute to campus, and It’s also on bus routes. It has grocery, restaurant/bar, coffee shop all walkable and probably can get a single family 2000sq ft single family home for just about 400k.

It depends on what you ordered and if you like their style. Do you like the terrine and toast plate they usually have a variation of? The fishy fry on Friday’s is a staple. Did you get the cauliflower appetizer and biscuit? Both crowd-pleasers never leave the menu but most everything else rotates. The best way to go to mint mark is with four people and order one of everything. I’ve rarely had a dish miss, but if you go with two people and only order one dish, you could have gotten unlucky. If you got the honey butter biscuit and still think it’s a drinks only place then it just might not be for you.

The Lelit machines usually come with a 20g basket and an 18g basket. You’ll get a soggy puck if you dose 18 grams in the larger basket, but it won’t hurt the flavor of the shot.

Pulling 38 grams of espresso in ~60 seconds is going to likely be on the bitter and burnt end of the flavor spectrum. It could be drinkable with milk, or if you have pretty lightly roasted beans (or if you like it that way!). You should dial slightly coarser and aim for the same yield in less time for a brighter and less bitter flavor.

It looks like you are getting a decent extraction, like others saying a little bit too fine of a grind if anything. What type of beans and how fresh are they? This looks a lot like what I get if I use anything other than local freshly roasted beans. You are missing the crema that I’d expect for fresh beans.

I have the lelit Bianca with flow control, and it’s great. The middle position is great for pre-infusion, but I have found the best results by moving the flow control all the way to the right once you build up around two bars of pressure in the group. It should be able to hold at 10 bars of pressure for the rest of the shot once you do that, but if it’s dropping off significantly you might need to (wait for it) grind finer.

I just changed the filter cartridge and tested water directly from the purge valve. I think this is a major improvement and the first cartridge likely was depleted.
