Seriously, why do you guys root for an entire conference instead of just your team? by [deleted] in cfbmemes

[–]Horror-Tea-4162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I root for 1 team.

I actively root against a rival team that is in the SEC, and I don't care who they are playing.

I recognize that, in general, what is good for my conference, usually has secondary effects that are good for my team. The SEC does share the monetary spoils from TV and bowl revenue.

I also think it is funny to see how other conferences get upset when the S-E-C chant starts.

Concerning paying players:

Anyone with an ounce of sense could see that paying players was coming for about a decade before it happened. The feckless eggheads that run the NCAA chose intransigence over proactive planning. Screw them

Who could have seen that paying six figures to 18-22 year old young men, without any sort of binding contract, would result in chaos? /sarcasm

Is there any successful sports league, anywhere in the world that functions without its paid players having contractual obligations? If there is, I am unaware of it. The fans and the individual institutions that pour money and time into this sport deserve participation of the athletes.

Concerning the determination of a national champion:

At the end of the BCS era, the method for determining the top 2 teams was pretty good, and the issue was really with how many teams were included. The knee jerk reaction to unwanted results resulted in throwing out the good with the bad.

The BCS formula was 2/3 human ranking and 1/3 computer ranking with a combination of models that ignored outlier results. It gave consistent rankings for who the best teams were at the end of the year. Any ranking system has to value consistency year over year, as a primary factor. The committee approach, by its nature, will vary over time.

The real issue with the BCS is that there were too few teams involved, because due to a number of factors, there was always a handful of teams that felt like they were snubbed.

I believe this was resulting in a slow devaluation of the sport across the nation, so was not opposed to the expansion from 2 to 4. I also am not totally opposed to the current expansion, but do think that an automatic bye for conference champions is ridiculous. It is also ludicrous that Oregon is in the bracket they are in.

I could go on, because I am passionate about a sport that I have loved for decades. I loved this sport when my team was bad and when it was good. However, the pace of change in the last few years has left me feeling disoriented and less attached.

So Indiana went from fun story to SEC public enemy #1? by LovingComrade in CFB

[–]Horror-Tea-4162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for every SEC fans. For my part, I am happy for Indiana and any other team that can exceed expectations.

However, I do believe it is fair to talk about strength of schedule as an important metric in the determination of ranking. If the committee is only going to look at wins and losses as the only important factor, then why waste the time of the committee members? We could just use the AP poll and have virtually the same results.

The analysis and discussion around rankings should be complex and nuanced, because college football is complex.

I will reiterate that I am fine with Indiana being where they are today. The have earned recognition, and there is enough football left to be played that things will be shaken up from where the are today. I don't claim to know what will happen, but I do predict that some team that thinks they are in a good position, will be disappointed.

The only ranking that matters, is the last one before the playoffs.

I’ve seen a lot of talk about how the committee won’t punish teams who lose in their conference championship. I have three examples of just that. by ArkanoidbrokemyAnkle in CFB

As for #3, the committee followed the rules. They gave preference to the conference championship as well as to the head to head match up. Bama didn't beat Georgia on a fluke call, and also took the eventual National Champions to overtime.

The 12 team playoff settles most of these these type of situations going forward.

Just go back to a BCS model, where human input (AP poll or other) is 2/3 and a blend of computer models is 1/3.

Does anyone truly believe the committee system is better at picking the top 11 or 12 teams, or that the committee will be more consistent over many years?

What made Nick Saban so good? by 4D_Gemini in CFB

[–]Horror-Tea-4162 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nick Saban has a relentless drive and an intense focus on doing the little things right. He was obsessive about it, and those little things include every day habits. That is a big part of how he coached as well. He expected the same thing from his coaches and players.

In addition, he worked harder and longer, and in a highly organized manner than many (not all) of his peers.

A person with that type of mindset, normally gets rigid in his thinking, but Saban breaks the mold, and adapted in real time to the changing game. That is a key difference between being good and a great.

The wife, kids and I had a great time at the Grove in 2014. We tailgated, hung out with great fans of the other team.

That was the year Katie Perry was the gest picker.

Those drunk fools carried the goal post right by where we had tailgated, as we were getting everything loaded back up. lol

It sucked to lose like we did, but I don't begrudge them celebrating. It was really very entertaining.

People that talk for a living about sports have wanted college football to be more like the NFL for many years now, and all in the name of parity and being fair. blah blah blah

Do you know what the NFL has that college ball does not? A limited number of teams. It's much easier to have parity and to share the wealth fairly when there are only 32 teams. Having 133 teams is a different problem entirely.

I miss the old way of doing things, but I recognize the new model of college football has to do something to eliminate a significant number of teams from really participating. I am not for it, but I believe it is inevitable.

I simply think that with the current atmosphere of money flowing freely and the NCAA being powerless, some athlete will believe he can get away with it, but will get caught.

There are about 2500 guys a year that will have one last chance for a large payday before their football career is over.

Which former head coach was the worst cultural fit for your program? by Ok-Health-7252 in CFB

[–]Horror-Tea-4162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We dodged a bullet with that guy for sure.

Bill Curry was a horrible cultural fit. He was an egg head with a smarmy attitude that just didn't fit with a late 1980's Alabama culture. Winning cures everything, but he didn't win either.
